Nobody needed to.

On 3 January 2009, someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first Bitcoin block. Embedded in it was a newspaper headline about the UK government preparing a second bailout for the banks. No company launched it. No regulator approved it. No bank signed off.

Nearly eighteen years later, it is still running, block after block, and still nobody is in charge. That is not an accident. It is the whole point, and it comes down to two ideas: permissionless and rules without rulers.

What permissionless actually means

Permissionless means you don't have to ask. Not a bank, not a government, not a platform, not anyone.

You can download the software and run a node. You can generate a wallet in seconds, with no name, no ID and no credit check. You can send value to anyone on the planet, any hour of any day. You can mine. You can build a business, an app or an entire layer on top of it. Nobody reviews your application, because there is no application.

Compare that with the system most of us live in. Opening a bank account needs approval. Sending money abroad needs approval. Accounts can be frozen, payments can be blocked, and services can be withdrawn with a single policy change. Most people never notice those permissions until one of them is taken away.

Bitcoin flips the default. Access isn't granted, so it can't be revoked.

Rules without rulers

Here's the part people miss. Bitcoin isn't lawless. It has strict rules, stricter than most systems on earth.

There will only ever be 21 million bitcoin. A new block arrives roughly every ten minutes. Coins can only be spent by whoever holds the keys. The issuance schedule halves every four years. These rules are written in code and checked by every node, every time.

What Bitcoin doesn't have is a ruler. No CEO, no board, no central bank, no foundation that can change the rules on a whim. Even Satoshi stepped away and left it to the network.

Instead, the rules are enforced by tens of thousands of independent nodes run by ordinary people. Every node checks every block. If a block breaks the rules, it gets rejected, no matter who mined it or how much hash power they have.

This has been tested. During the block size wars of 2017, a group of large companies and miners agreed behind closed doors to change Bitcoin's rules. Users running nodes simply refused, and the change never happened. The people with the money and the influence didn't get the final say. The rules did.

That's what rules without rulers looks like in practice: everyone plays by the same rules, and nobody gets to rewrite them for their own benefit.

Why it matters

It's easy to shrug at all this if your bank has never let you down. But permission is only valuable to the people who hold it, and it gets withdrawn all the time.

People get debanked for reasons they're never told. Families in countries with collapsing currencies watch their savings melt while capital controls stop them moving money out. Activists find their accounts frozen the moment they become inconvenient. In Nigeria in 2020, protest groups whose bank accounts were blocked turned to Bitcoin to keep receiving donations.

And for everyone else, there's the quieter rule change: money that loses value every year because someone decided to print more of it. The Genesis Block headline wasn't a random choice. It was a timestamp and a statement about a system where the rulers rewrite the rules whenever it suits them.

Bitcoin doesn't care about your politics, your passport or your postcode. That neutrality is exactly what makes it valuable. A system that works the same for everyone is a system nobody can weaponise against you.

The idea is spreading

Permissionless doesn't stop at the base layer.

Lightning takes the same principle and makes it instant. Anyone can open a channel, run a node or send a payment of a few sats across the world in seconds, with no payment processor deciding who gets to play.

Nostr brings it to communication. Your identity is a key you hold, not an account a platform lends you. No company can delete you, shadowban you or sell your audience back to you. If one relay won't carry your notes, another will.

This is the cypherpunk vision coming true. Back in 1993, the cypherpunks argued that privacy and freedom wouldn't be handed out by governments or corporations. People would have to build them, in code. Bitcoin, Lightning, Nostr and Conduit are that code.

Take a look at Conduit Marketplace **if you want to buy something or sell something. Conduit follows the example of Permissionless and Rules Without Rulers\
EricFJ (nprofile…fh2r) STACI (nprofile…qj3u)

Wear the message

Permissionless and rules without rulers aren't slogans. They're the reason Bitcoin exists, and the reason it has survived every attempt to stop it, capture it or water it down.

The more people understand them, the stronger the network gets. More nodes, more users, more people who know why it matters and won't trade it away for convenience.

That's why we made the Permissionless Hoodie. Ransom-note lettering on the front, because this message was never approved. The Rules Without Rulers stamp on the sleeves, with a cracked crown and the Genesis Block date, III / I / MMIX. A conversation starter for anyone who asks what it means.

Nobody gave Bitcoin permission. Nobody needs to.

One Sunday evening

On Sunday 15 August 1971, Richard Nixon interrupted America's evening television to announce that the US dollar could no longer be exchanged for gold.

He had spent the weekend at Camp David with a small group of advisers, including Treasury Secretary John Connally, Federal Reserve chairman Arthur Burns and a Treasury official named Paul Volcker. They came down from the mountain with three measures: a 90-day freeze on wages and prices, a 10% surcharge on imports, and the one that mattered most, the suspension of the dollar's convertibility into gold.

Nixon told viewers the suspension was temporary. He blamed international speculators and promised a stronger dollar. The markets cheered on Monday morning.

That temporary measure is now 55 years old. It was never reversed. Every pound, dollar, euro and yen in existence today is a product of that broadcast.

What gold was doing for us

Gold was the limit. Under the system agreed at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in July 1944, the US dollar was fixed to gold at $35 an ounce, and every other major currency was fixed to the dollar.

Ordinary people could not walk into a bank and swap notes for bullion. Foreign governments and central banks could. If they doubted the dollar, they could hand their dollars back to the US Treasury and take gold home instead.

That right was the discipline in the system. America could only issue as many dollars as the world trusted it to redeem. Print too many, and the gold would leave.

Through the 1960s, that is exactly what happened. The US was paying for the Vietnam War and a major expansion of domestic spending at the same time, and it paid with new dollars. France, under de Gaulle, began converting its dollars into gold and shipping it home. Others followed. In 1968 the arrangement that central banks had used to hold the gold price at $35 collapsed.

By 1971 US gold reserves had more than halved from their post-war peak, and the dollars held abroad outnumbered the gold left to back them several times over. It was a bank run, and the bank was the United States.

Nixon had two honest options: stop creating dollars, or admit the dollar was worth less gold than promised. He chose a third. He closed the window.

Why that broke the money

Closing the gold window removed the only limit on how much money could be created. From that night, a dollar was a promise to pay nothing in particular.

An attempt to patch the system in December 1971 lasted little more than a year. By 1973 the major currencies were floating against each other, each one backed by nothing but the word of the government that issued it. That is what fiat means: money by decree.

Three things follow from money with no limit.

It loses value by design. When the supply can always grow, each unit buys a little less each year. Inflation stops being an accident and becomes policy. Central banks now aim for it.

It punishes saving and rewards borrowing. Money held in an account shrinks in real terms, while debts get easier to repay with cheaper money. So people, companies and governments learn to borrow rather than save.

It rewards whoever stands closest to the tap. New money does not reach everyone at once. It reaches governments, banks and asset holders first, and wages last. Those at the front of the queue spend it before prices rise. Everyone else gets the higher prices.

None of this needed a conspiracy. It only needed the limit to be taken away.

55 years of the consequences

A dollar today buys about 12% of what it bought in 1971, and less than 1% of the gold. The numbers below are the before and after.

Sources: gold price, CPI inflation since 1971, US Treasury debt total. The house price row is an approximate figure and is not taken from these sources.

The first decade set the pattern. Inflation ran through the 1970s on both sides of the Atlantic, and in Britain it reached around 25% in 1975. Savings built over a working lifetime lost a large share of their value in a few years.

The debt figure tells you who gained most from the change. A government that can no longer run out of money has no reason to stop borrowing. US federal debt took nearly 200 years to reach $398 billion. It has grown roughly a hundredfold since, and passed $40 trillion in August 2026.

Then there is the gap between work and reward. For the generation after the Second World War, American pay rose in step with productivity. From the early 1970s the two lines part: output per hour kept climbing, while typical pay rose far more slowly. Houses, shares and other assets climbed instead.

Economists argue about how much of this belongs to 1971 and how much to oil shocks, globalisation and technology. What is hard to argue with is the direction. Since money lost its anchor, owning assets has paid better than earning wages, and saving in cash has been a losing game.

That is why so many charts bend in the same year, and why people still ask what happened in 1971.

Why Bitcoin fixes it

Bitcoin puts the limit back, and this time nobody holds the key to remove it.

On 3 January 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first Bitcoin block and embedded a newspaper headline in it: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks". It was a timestamp, and a statement of what the project was for.

Gold failed as money's anchor for one reason. It sat in a vault, and the people guarding the vault were the same people who wanted to print. When the promise became inconvenient, one man could cancel it on television. Bitcoin is built so that no such person exists.

The supply is fixed. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoin. New coins are issued on a schedule that halves roughly every four years, and more than 95% of them already exist. No committee can vote to make more.

The rules are enforced by everyone. Tens of thousands of people around the world run the software that checks every transaction against those rules. To change the supply, you would have to convince all of them to make their own money worth less.

You can hold it yourself. With your own keys, your bitcoin is not a claim on a bank or a promise from a government. There is no window to close, because there is no counter and nobody behind it.

It needs no permission. Anyone with a phone can receive it, save in it and send it anywhere on earth, without asking a bank, a card network or a state.

Nixon could break the dollar because the dollar depended on trusting him. Bitcoin replaces that trust with rules that are checked, in public, every ten minutes.

Sound money was not lost for good in 1971. It was rebuilt in 2009, and this time there is no window to close.

Fiat Delenda Est

Cato the Elder is said to have ended every speech in the Roman Senate with the same line, whatever the subject: Carthage must be destroyed. He kept saying it until it happened.

Bitcoiners have their own version. Fiat Delenda Est. Fiat must be destroyed. Not with violence or a vote, but one person at a time, each choosing to save in money that cannot be debased.

We put the whole story on a hoodie. The front reads Established 1971, Nixon Broke It, Bitcoin Fixes It. The back reads Fiat Delenda Est. It is made to order, ships worldwide and is paid for in sats on our Conduit store .

Wear it somewhere people will ask what happened in 1971. Now you know what to tell them.

Stack sats. Wear the message

At Satoshoes we like to do things the Bitcoin way which is why we dropped our Shopify store and have migrated over to Conduit Marketplace . Satoshoes is a Bitcoin merchant so it makes perfect sense for us to do this and it all works so well. Nostr, Conduit Marketplace, Bitcoin and Club Orange all work so well together.\
If you are a Bitcoin merchant we would urge you to take a look at Conduit Marketplace and consider offering your products or services there. Easy to set up and the people you want to reach are there. If you need further details about Conduit marketplace you can chat with EricFJ (nprofile…fh2r) or STACI (nprofile…qj3u) who will be happy to help

This is the bit we never get tired of.

Liz just unboxed her TBA Paranoid Anarchist shoes and showed them to the world. Black, grey and white camo, with orange exactly where it should be.

This is why Satoshoes exists. Not for the high street. Not for people who want to blend in. For Bitcoiners who would rather wear what they believe than explain it.

Every pair is made to order. No warehouse full of stock, no middlemen, no permission asked. One pair, made for one Bitcoiner, shipped anywhere in the world with full tracking.

Want yours done your way? We do customs too. Bitcoin is the most powerful thing on Earth.

Not gold. Not oil. Not any army, any currency, any institution that's ever tried to hold power over people. A protocol. Seventeen years old. Unkillable. Running exactly as written, whether the powerful like it or not.

And the wild part? Most of the world has no idea. They've never touched it, never looked past the headlines, never asked what happens when money can't be printed, seized, or censored.

Imagine when they do.

Bitcoin stops wars — because you can't print your way into an endless one forever. Bitcoin ends corruption — because the ledger doesn't lie and doesn't forget. Bitcoin banks the unbanked — no ID, no permission, no gatekeeper standing between a person and their own value. Bitcoin demands the truth — proof of work, not promises.

Most of all, Bitcoin has the power to set us all free.

We built Satoshoes to put that fire on something you wear every day. Orange Flock Urban Camo Sneakers:

Camouflage was never really about blending in. It's about surviving in a system that wants you seen, tracked, and categorised — and choosing not to be.

The Orange Flock Urban Camo Sneakers take that idea and wear it literally. Black, grey, and white disruption pattern from heel to toe, with one flash of colour breaking through: Bitcoin orange. Because you can move quietly through the system and still stand for something loud.

Orange Flock isn't a hype drop. It's a rebel clothing lineage — for the ones who were stacking sats and staying off the radar long before "self-custody" was a hashtag. BTM Life. No permission asked. No trend chased.

Built to move, made to last, worn by people who understand that real sovereignty often looks quiet — right up until you look closer.

Fiat Delenda Est. Permissionless Athletic Sneakers:

Permissionless isn't just a word we print on a box. Just a network running exactly as written, block after block, whether anyone grants it permission or not.

These athletic Permissionless sneakers carry that circuitry right on the upper — wires running hot, current flowing where you send it, no chokepoints, no kill switch.
