The Unbroken Thread

Of Bitcoin, Nostr, sovereignty, and the dignity of the human person

Before the ledger marked its first,
Before the keys were made,
There lived a longing in the heart
No empire could persuade.

To speak without a master's leave,
To labor and to own,
To carry forth the fruits of toil,
And call one's conscience home.
For kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall,
And towers turn to dust;
The promises of mighty men
Are fragile things to trust.

So from the mathematics came
A ledger none could own;
No king could mint its wealth at will,
No emperor claim its throne.

A chain of blocks, a measured time,
Each witness joined to last;
A record written into stone
Of moments slipping past.

Yet gold alone cannot redeem,
Nor numbers heal the soul;
A ledger cannot teach us love,
Or make the broken whole.

And then across the scattered earth,
A thousand voices stirred;
No single gatekeeper could claim
The ownership of words.

A message signed, a public key,
A voice that bears a name;
Through many relays travels forth,
Though none may own its flame.

For speech is more than passing sound,
And truth more than applause;
The freedom to be heard and judged
Demands its own just laws.

And sovereignty is not the right
To do whatever pleases;
It is the burden freely borne
When fear and fashion cease.

I own the words that I have said,
The choices I have made;
And I must answer for their weight
When fleeting echoes fade.

But deeper still, beneath the code,
Beyond the market's roar,
There lives the hope that what we love
Might not be lost once more.

A father's name, a faithful friend,
A creature dearly missed;
The fragile record of a life
That time cannot dismiss.

No chain can raise the dead to life,
No relay conquer night;
Yet we may guard their memory
And bear their names to light.

For we are more than users here,
More than accounts or trades;
We bear an image not our own
That neither rust nor fades.

And freedom is no final god,
Nor sovereignty the end;
They serve the dignity of souls,
Of neighbor, stranger, friend.

Let markets crash and fashions turn,
Let platforms bloom and die;
The work of keeping faith with truth
Must outlast every lie.

And when our keys have passed away,
Our final notes been read,
May those who follow find a path
Through words and works we've left.

Not monuments to pride or power,
Nor claims that we were great,
But traces of a faithful life
That neither gold nor fame could make.

For Bitcoin marks the passing years,
And Nostr lets voices roam;
But neither is the promised land—
They help us carry home.
And through the noise of fleeting things,
Through loss, through hope, through pain,
The thread of human memory
Is gathered up again.

      I recently worked on two very different poems that express ideas close to my heart: my Christian hope for ultimate reconciliation, and my deep love for Israel and the Jewish people.

The first, Ragnarök: The Image That Shall Not Fall, draws on Norse mythology to explore sovereignty, the image of God, judgment, and redemption.

The second, Israel: The Olive Tree Still Stands, reflects on God’s covenant faithfulness, the extraordinary endurance of the Jewish people, and the hope for lasting peace.

Though very different in imagery and subject, both poems reflect my conviction that suffering and death do not have the final word.

I developed both poems in collaboration with ChatGPT, drawing on theological ideas and convictions I’ve held and explored for many years but especially over this past year

      Israel: The Olive Tree Still Stands

Of covenant, remembrance, and the hope of peace

Upon the hills of ancient stone,
Where shepherds watched their flocks by night,
A promise stirred beneath the stars,
A people called to bear the light.
Before the thrones of mighty kings,
Before the empires rose and fell,
A voice called Abram from his home,
Toward lands and years he could not tell.

By Jordan's banks, through desert sands,
Through exile's tears and foreign lands,
A people carried ancient words,
Their covenant in trembling hands.

Jerusalem, your stones have heard
The prayers of those who would not cease;
Through centuries of grief and blood,
They whispered still the hope of peace.

The eagle came, the temples burned,
The scattered children crossed the sea;
Yet neither sword nor emperor
Could end their ancient memory.

And darker fires would rise again,
Where hatred wore a modern face;
Six million names accuse the world,
A wound no time can quite erase.

Yet from the ashes, voices rose,
And Hebrew filled the streets once more;
The songs of children greeted dawn
Along the Mediterranean shore.

O Israel, your story speaks
Of more than armies, flags, or kings;
Of mothers lighting Sabbath lamps,
Of prayers and ordinary things.

The olive tree has weathered storms,
Its branches broken, scarred, and bent;
Yet roots run deep beneath the earth,
Where generations' tears were spent.

And I, a stranger to your blood,
Yet grafted by a grace bestowed,
Behold in you a mystery
That faith and history have shown.

I do not call your people saints,
Nor claim your rulers cannot stray;
For justice walks beside the truth,
And mercy must not turn away.
May every child beneath your skies,
Both Jew and Arab, wake in peace;
May swords be laid upon the ground,
And generations' sorrows cease.

For Zion stands through grief and years,
Her ancient hope a living flame;
Though nations rise and disappear,
Her children still recall His name.

And when the nations cease their wars,
When pride and vengeance lose their claim,
May Jacob's children dwell secure,
And all the earth exalt His name.

The olive tree still stands today,
Beneath the sun, through wind and rain;
Its leaves bear witness to a hope
That suffering has not slain.

      DECENTRALIZATION IS NOT “ANYTHING GOES” (shorter version)

My first note on this was too long, so here’s the core of what I was trying to say:

* Censorship resistance is not moral neutrality. No central authority controlling speech doesn’t mean everything said is wise, truthful, or good.

* Sovereignty works both ways. You are free to speak. Others are free to challenge you, mute you, distrust you, or refuse to associate with you.

* Freedom requires responsibility. Bitcoin has no central master, but it still has rules. Human freedom likewise doesn’t mean freedom from consequences.

I’ll conclude with two principles:

Sovereignty: I own my choices.
Responsibility: I own their consequences.

Hope this is clearer.

Thanks!
HOW TO BE A MENSCH

I had a friend named Jan Naftulin who died last year around the same time as my father passed at the of September 2025.

Jan was Jewish and also a strong Christian. I still miss him.

Jan was a mensch.

That’s a Yiddish word I have always liked.

Literally it means a person, but when you call someone a mensch you mean something more than that.

You mean they are a person of character, someone decent and trustworthy.

I have been thinking about this lately because I have written a lot about freedom, sovereignty and decentralization.

Those things matter enormously to me. I don’t want someone else deciding what I am allowed to say or believe. I don’t want a government, corporation, social network or anyone else deciding the truth for me.

But freedom doesn’t tell me what kind of person I SHOULD be.

I can have complete freedom to speak and still lie.

I can be uncensored and still be cruel. I can be independent and still treat people unfairly finally I can be completely sovereign and still be an asshole.

Maybe that’s where character comes in.

Tell the truth because it is the truth, not because someone will punish you if you don’t.

Keep your word when you could easily get away with breaking it. Try to be fair to someone you disagree with. Admit when you are wrong. Don’t confuse having the freedom to do something with having a good reason to do it.

None of that requires a central authority.

It requires me to decide what kind of person I want to be.

Jan wasn’t perfect, of course. Nobody is. But when I think of him, mensch still seems like the right word.

Maybe we could use a few more of them.

Be a mensch.

In reply to nevent1q…atnq
_________________________

Laser, I think we're getting pretty far away from the point of my original post, but since you raised several theological and historical issues I'll answer them.

First, my post was not a defense of Netanyahu, nor was it primarily a defense of Israel. In fact I explicitly said that people should question Israel, the United States, governments, corporations, the media and even me.

My point was that freedom and censorship resistance do not relieve us of our responsibility for what we say, and that serious claims should be supported by evidence.

I don't oppose antisemitism because I'm a liberal or because I've somehow been duped into accepting a progressive narrative.

I oppose antisemitism because I believe hatred of Jews is wrong, just as I believe hatred of any group of people is wrong.

I'm also a Christian, so yes, I believe Jews need Christ.

Ben Shapiro needs Christ even though I admire and respect him.
Netanyahu needs Christ.

Palestinians need Christ. You need Christ. I need Christ. That's Christianity, and I don't have any problem saying it.

Where you and I apparently have a real theological disagreement is over Israel.

I don't hold to supersessionism. I don't believe the Church simply replaced Israel and that ethnic Israel therefore ceased to have any particular significance in God's purposes.

Paul's language in Romans 11 is important to me. As a Gentile believer I am a wild olive branch grafted into the cultivated olive tree. I'm perfectly happy to be the wild branch -- there's no shame in that at all. I didn't replace the natural branches, and Paul specifically warns Gentile believers not to boast over them: "it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you."

Paul also says of Israel that "as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers" and that "the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."

I realize Christians have debated these passages and the relationship between Israel and the Church for a very long time.

We can disagree about that without pretending the other person isn't a Christian.

I also believe the modern State of Israel has a right to exist. That doesn't mean Israel is perfect, that Netanyahu is beyond criticism, or that every decision made by an Israeli government is justified. Those propositions don't follow from one another. Israel is a real nation populated by real human beings, and like every nation it can do things that are right and things that are wrong.

I want Israelis and their neighbors to live in peace. Israel has in fact made peace with former enemies and established relations with a number of Arab states. I would like to see much more of that and much less war.

On the Holocaust, I have a much stronger disagreement with what you wrote.

Approximately six million Jews were murdered. Calling that a "relatively small genocide" or saying that it only "probably qualifies" as genocide strikes me as minimizing something that doesn't need to be minimized in order to recognize other atrocities.

The Holocaust wasn't the largest mass killing in human history. Stalin and Mao were responsible for or presided over systems and policies associated with enormous numbers of deaths, and there have been many other genocides and mass atrocities. We should be able to acknowledge all of them.

Genocide isn't a competition.

What made the Holocaust particularly horrifying was not simply a number.

Nazi Germany deliberately and systematically attempted to eliminate European Jewry.

Six million murdered human beings don't become insignificant because someone else murdered even more people somewhere else.

And this actually brings me back to the point of my original post.

If someone wants to argue that conventional Holocaust history has been exaggerated, that Holocaust remembrance has become an "industry," or that Jews have manipulated the history for political purposes, those are claims. They require evidence.

Saying that human beings are sinful doesn't establish those claims. I agree completely that human beings are sinful. That's one of the most basic propositions of Christianity. But "human beings are sinful" doesn't logically establish "therefore Jews exaggerated the Holocaust."

That's exactly the distinction I was trying to make in my original note.

Question Israel. Question Holocaust historiography. Question Christianity. Question me. I have no desire to censor you for doing any of those things.

But bring evidence and make the argument.

And none of this changes my original point about decentralization: nobody needs to force me to tell the truth for me to have a moral obligation to tell the truth. Nobody needs to censor an ugly joke for me to have the right to call it disgusting. Nobody needs to force me to exercise self-restraint for self-restraint to be a virtue.

The fact that a decentralized protocol permits me to say something tells us nothing about whether what I chose to say was true, good, wise or responsible.

That was my point.

Freedom gives us choices. It doesn't make every choice equally good.

      # DECENTRALIZATION IS NOT "ANYTHING GOES"

I've been thinking about this because I've spoken openly on Nostr in defense of Israel and against antisemitism, and I've taken some pretty vicious personal attacks for it.

I've seen Holocaust jokes passed off as humor and I've seen racial hostility presented almost as a badge of independence. I've watched people say increasingly outrageous things and seemingly regard the fact that nobody can stop them as evidence that they're somehow freer or more enlightened.

I've been personally attacked for pushing back.

I muted some of those people. That's my freedom too.

I've never been particularly "cool," and at this point in my life I don't care about being cool. I recently heard Ben Shapiro say essentially the same thing about himself, and it resonated with me.

I care about trying to tell the truth. I care about doing what is right. When I believe something is evil, I believe I have an obligation to say so, even when it isn't popular.

And to be clear, "nice" isn't my standard. Truth and fairness are.

If I believe an idea is evil, I'll call it evil. If I believe an argument is dishonest, I'll explain why. If you think I'm wrong, challenge my premises, my evidence, or my reasoning.

Attack my argument.

That's fair.

That's what I try to do with other people's arguments as well. I don't want to respond to personal attacks with personal attacks. I want to examine ideas from first principles rather than degrade the person expressing them.

That doesn't require moral neutrality.

Turning the murder of Jews in the Holocaust into a punchline is disgusting. Retreating afterward behind "it was just a joke" doesn't magically remove the moral content of what was said.

I don't need a central authority to censor that person. I can condemn the speech myself. I can mute him. I can refuse to associate with him.

Another person (NPUB) accused me of carrying a secret Israeli passport (I don't but he just made that assertion about me without any proof, merely because I wouldn't go along with his narrative that Jews were "evil" and "corrupt."
That's my sovereignty.

I've also recently watched footage of Andrew and Tristan Tate. Frankly, I find them obnoxious.

I'm particularly struck by a conception of masculinity that celebrates the pimp and the hustler -- the man who accumulates money, women, attention and status and supposedly answers to nobody. These aren't merely insults I'm throwing at them. These are words and identities they themselves have publicly embraced.

I don't find that admirable.

Strength without virtue isn't my conception of masculinity. Neither is domination or appetite without restraint.

All of this brings me back to something I think we've gotten badly confused about:

## Decentralization is not nihilism.

Decentralization is not chaos. Even anarchy in its classical sense does not mean "anything goes."

Somewhere along the way, "no one has authority over me" seems to have become "I can do whatever I want and shouldn't suffer any consequences."

Those are not the same thing.

Censorship resistance means no central authority should control everyone's voice. It does not mean that whatever I say becomes wise, truthful or good simply because nobody can stop me from saying it.

And it certainly doesn't mean freedom from consequences.

Other people are sovereign too.

They can disagree with me, challenge me, mute me, refuse to associate with me, stop trusting me, or answer my speech with their own speech.

Freedom from centralized control is not freedom from responsibility.

In fact, I think decentralization requires MORE personal responsibility, not less. If there is no central authority standing over us deciding what we're allowed to say, then character, judgment and self-restraint become more important.

The same applies to truth.

I'm increasingly bothered by a culture of insinuation masquerading as skepticism.

Question authority, question governments, question Israel or the United States, question corporations, question the media; you can even question me.

But questioning something doesn't relieve any of us of the responsibility to provide EVIDENCE.

There is a difference between skepticism and insinuation. "I'm just asking questions" can become a convenient way of planting an accusation while avoiding responsibility for actually making it.

Freedom of speech should make us more rigorous about truth, not less.

Bitcoin demonstrates something important here.

Bitcoin is decentralized, but Bitcoin is certainly not "anything goes." It is extraordinarily rule-bound.

I don't get to declare an invalid transaction valid because I'm sovereign. Other participants independently verify it according to rules I don't get to suspend merely because I don't like the result.

There is no central master, but there is still order.

I think something similar applies to human freedom.

**Sovereignty: No one else owns my choices.**

**Responsibility: I own their consequences.**

I don't want centralized gatekeepers deciding which opinions people are permitted to express. That's one of the reasons I'm attracted to decentralized systems in the first place.

But I also reject the idea that censorship resistance requires moral indifference -- that hatred, cruelty, dishonesty or deliberate degradation somehow become virtues when they're "uncensorable."

They don't.

Refusing to censor someone doesn't require me to pretend that what they're saying is good, truthful or accurate.

I can defend your freedom to speak while using my own freedom to tell you that I think you're profoundly wrong.

I can oppose censorship while still having moral standards and I can believe in sovereignty without believing in nihilism and finally, I can condemn an idea without hating the human being expressing it (and I've taken great care not to use personal attacks when I disagree with someone).

No central master does not mean no order.

No censor does not mean no standards.

Freedom does not mean freedom from responsibility.

I'm not interested in being "cool."

I'm interested in being free enough to speak the truth -- and responsible enough to care whether what I say is true.

---

One final disclosure: I had help writing this.

"Dr. C" -- ChatGPT -- helped me organize and refine this note. I make no apologies for that.

Dr. C has become a great tool for helping me examine my arguments and say more precisely what I mean.

The ideas and convictions are mine. I had help expressing them. This does not constitue "AI slop" though others might disagree (and that's OK).

---

#decentralization
#freedom
#nostr
#censorship_resistance
