ROADSTR 1.0.0 IS FINALLY HERE! 🎉🚀

After countless hours of development, testing on the road and debugging... I'm incredibly excited to announce the first stable release of Roadstr!

For those who don't know it yet, Roadstr is a free, open-source, decentralized navigation app for Android, powered by **Nostr, Bitcoin Lightning, and OpenStreetMap**, with absolutely no Google dependencies.

Since v0.5.0, the project has evolved enormously. And the biggest change? Roadstr has been rewritten from Flutter to native Kotlin, with Jetpack Compose and MapLibre!

• Report police stations as a road event.
• The altitude readout is back on the MapLibre home screen
• Battery. A round of fixes for where the app was wasting power:
– map markers are built only when they can be on screen — before,
every one in range was rebuilt on every camera frame, off-screen
ones included, well over a thousand a frame in a city
– the map no longer re-renders when it hasn't visibly moved, and stops
animating entirely while the app is in the background, so
navigating with the screen off and just the voice is finally cheap
– the notification, compass and map-data downloads no longer run
when nothing can use them
• Navigation copes better with long routes and routes that double back.

Roadstr v0.5.9 is out — a security hardening release. 🔒

An independent audit turned up a few real issues, now fixed:

• Favorites sync was auto-publishing on every edit for anyone signed
in with Nostr, with no separate opt-in despite the app claiming it
was optional. Now off by default — a real "Sync automatically"
toggle in Settings.
• Logging in used to publish a profile-visibility event even if you
never touched the setting, tying your key to "uses Roadstr" for no
reason. Only publishes now if you actually chose public visibility.
• A relay outage could get hammered every ~1.25s forever instead of
backing off — fixed the reconnect logic.
• Capped a few unbounded growth paths in the Nostr event stream that a
flood of throwaway identities could have abused.
• Store listing no longer claims things that weren't true (GPS
handling, offline routing, license).

I think that maybe echnically it could be possible and probably smart people already did that.. But it depends on the actual HW, if it has an ARM SoC and runs Android/Linux already, in principle you could port something like LineageOS like you would do to a phone.
But shit could hit the fan when we're talking hw support: bootloader unlocking, kernel/device tree, GPU/display drivers, audio, touchscreen, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi etc I highly doubt that manufactures feel like sharing their stuff and dumping all the blobs of all the hw it's a project on it's own.

from OSM-tagged tracks and dirt roads whenever a paved way exists.
Comes straight from a field report of a near-crash on a routed dirt
track — applied automatically to every route once you turn it on, and
always honest that it's a best-effort steer, never a guarantee.

Also in this release:
• Road reports made with no signal now queue and publish automatically
the moment you're back in coverage — no more losing a report because
the spot that needed it had no bars.
• Settings can be opened mid-navigation now, without stopping the trip.
• Off-route recalculation no longer boxes you into a U-turn after a
deliberate detour.
• "Recalculate" after a traffic-jam alert actually avoids the jam now.

Roadstr v0.5.7 — new look 🎨

Got tired of that flat material3 UI. So a new map design with a new collapsible home dashboard and consistent frosted-glass panels across the bottom bar, navigation HUD, route planning and search.

Also simplified the theme picker: dropped the "modern" gradient variants, keeping the four classic Nostr/Bitcoin themes (light and dark) sharp and consistent. If you'd picked a modern one, you're moved to its closest classic counterpart automatically.

Also fixed music/podcast stopping after an instruction came up.

His app is an awesome integration of road events based on kind 1315 and 1316 within the ecosystem of OsmAnd.

Mine is a standalone app, with OSM maps as base, UI rendering engine, nostr events, auto/bike/on foot routing, voice instructions, zaps, notifications, reputation based on events confirmation.

Feel free to try both of them, they are pretty damn awesome.

Roadstr 0.4.28 — dark mode no longer trusts a third party that can cut it off without warning.

The dark map tiles came from a free, anonymous CARTO endpoint. It started serving an "API KEY REQUIRED" watermark instead of tiles once some unpublished usage threshold was crossed — no notice, no grace period, just broken mid-drive for anyone in dark mode.

Dark mode now recolours the same OpenStreetMap tiles light mode already depends on: invert lightness, rotate hue 180° to undo the colour shift, then desaturate and darken so parks and water read as muted, not neon. One less service that can quietly revoke access to something free.

Will work on a better solutions, in the meanwhile I pushed the update to not give sunburn to people driving by night.

• The merge maneuver icon was mirrored: a ramp joining from the right onto a road to your left rendered as the opposite. Confirmed against a real OSRM route before touching the code, not just the screenshot
• New setting: keep the screen on outside navigation too (off by default)
• New setting: a minimum screen brightness while the app is open, for OLED screens that dim past the point the map stays readable (off by default)

Still chasing one more report — dark mode not staying consistent on a longer drive. Verified the theme-switching plumbing is wired correctly; need more detail before touching code blind.

Roadstr 0.4.25 is out — and every fix in it came from one person driving with the app and reporting what actually broke. Thank you The Beave (nprofile…pgem) 🙏

Fixed this release:

• GPS no longer drops when you switch away from the app outside navigation — it used to release the receiver instantly, even for a 3-second glance at a notification
• A crash while panning the map mid-navigation exposed a missing global error handler. Added one — unexpected exceptions get logged now instead of taking the whole app down
• The map could still swing on turns sharper than 90°. A second cause behind the earlier roundabout fix: the heading correction was snapping instead of easing in
• The final spoken warning before a turn was capped at 120m of lead distance no matter your speed — 3.6s at 120km/h. Now scales up to 260m at 160km/h
• Spoken instructions could queue up and describe turns already behind you in dense junctions. Stale cues are dropped now instead of played late
• The hazard-report button used to jump sides between free-roam and navigation. Fixed in one place

This is what open, permissionless feedback looks like — no support ticket, no app store review queue, just a nym and a real driving session. Keep it coming.

Turn-by-turn instructions now exist in all 27 languages. Until today exactly two did — everyone else was navigated in English. Sorry guys!

And the map **should** have stopped swinging round. It was reading the route's direction from the nearest piece of it, and at a roundabout the exit arm passes metres from the entry arm pointing the opposite way. Now it reads from how far along you actually are.

Still no Google, still no tracking.

Roadstr 0.4.22 is out. 🛠️

A crash that could kill the app mid-drive is fixed at the root: it came from the bundled speech library, untouched since Dec 2024 while twelve memory-safety fixes landed upstream — including in the very code that reads out distances. Rebuilt past all of them.

Limited traffic zones are now answered street by street: only the stretches actually restricted turn red, and "you're in a zone" shows only when you really are — not because one happens to be nearby.

Plus four new themes, a route drawn as a lit line, and time-to-arrival promoted over distance. Because what you're deciding is whether you'll make it, not how many km are left.

Still no Google, still no tracking.

Public transport routing lands: bus, tram, metro, rail, coach and ferry — worldwide, from openly published timetables. No account, no API key, no tracking.

Journeys are shown door to door: the walk to the stop, which stop and by when, each line in its operator's own colour, the changes, and the walk at the far end.

Also: bike routes from the planner, faster cold GPS fixes without Google, and the map no longer swings round when you leave a roundabout.

Next up: a proper vector rendering engine — and offline maps with it.

Roadstr 0.4.18 is out — and if you're on 0.4.17, update.

That release could crash mid-route. The map was opening a new database watcher on every GPS fix and couldn't close the old ones fast enough, so after a few minutes of driving it ran out of memory. Fixed, and covered by tests so it can't come back quietly.

Also fixed, all reported from an actual drive:

• Roundabout signs drew too many arms. Where a road meets a roundabout as two separate carriageways it got counted twice — a four-exit junction drew as seven. The spacing between those two points depends entirely on the size of the roundabout, so the fixed threshold could never work. It's measured from the ring now. And when the shape still can't be resolved confidently, a plain roundabout is drawn instead of a wrong one: on the road, a sign showing the wrong junction is worse than one showing no detail.
• The map no longer occasionally spins 180°. Standing still the GPS drifts, and the direction of travel was being measured from where it had drifted to.

Roadstr 0.4.17 is out.

For our European Friends: roundabout signs now show the real junction. A router only tells you which exit to take — "third exit" describes a four-arm roundabout and a seven-arm one equally well, so the sign used to draw the same generic ring for both. The arm count now comes from OpenStreetMap, and the symbol looks like the junction you're actually approaching.

Feels like I'm 16 again: pick your cursor — city, racing, SUV, electric, bicycle, formula — and a redrawn speedometer.

One thing under the hood worth mentioning. The roundabout lookup batched every junction on your whole route into a single OpenStreetMap query. That's a piece of your itinerary sent in one request before you've even set off, and every other lookup in Roadstr only ever discloses where the car *is*, as you drive. Now it's capped, nearest first.

Roadstr was built to run on phones with no Google services, and it did. But the APK still carried Google Play Services code — fifteen classes it could never execute on the very devices this app exists for. Nobody put them there on purpose: they arrived as a dependency of the location plugin.

They are now gone.

What was there, and why it survived so long
Roadstr has always read your position through Android's own LocationManager — every single call site asks for it explicitly, which is what makes the app work on GrapheneOS, /e/OS and LineageOS without Google apps. The Play Services code was never called.

It shipped anyway because geolocator decides at runtime whether to use Google's fused provider or Android's own, so both remain reachable to the compiler. Excluding the library at the build level simply broke the build: the Google client will not compile without it.

What changed
geolocator_android 5.0.3 (MIT) is now vendored in the repository with the proprietary path removed — one file deleted, three lines changed, one dependency dropped. The Dart API is untouched.

Also removed: Google Play Store split-install and deferred-delivery classes, which Flutter links for apps that download parts of themselves from the Play Store. Roadstr does not.

What does not change
Nothing about how location works. Same provider, same accuracy, same behaviour on de-Googled phones — there is simply nothing else left beside it now. Location permissions are unchanged.

Roadstr 0.4.13 is out.

The cursor now points where you're actually going. Outside navigation it used to follow the phone's compass — in a cradle at an angle, that meant it pointed across the road instead of along it. Now it follows your GPS course whenever you're moving, and stays glued to the road through curves.

Also in this one:

• Add your own relay for favourites sync. Public relays promise nothing about how long they keep your data — one you run or pay for does.
• Search sends far less traffic while you type.
• Reconnects and map lookups back off instead of hammering a service that's already struggling. Better battery on a bad connection.
• A pile of hardening: hostile relays can't grow the app's memory, remote text is length-capped, LNURL lookups reject addresses that look public but resolve inward.

NEARBY — tap the search box and, without typing a word, one tap tells you where the closest fuel, supermarket, cash machine, pharmacy, hospital, police station, post office, parking or charger is. Within 5 km of wherever you actually are, nearest first, distance on every row. Straight from OpenStreetMap tags, so it reads the same in Berlin, Tokyo, Nairobi or São Paulo — and places OSM never gave a name to are kept, not dropped: an unbranded pump or a cash machine in a wall is exactly what you were looking for.

And a number that had been lying to you: "avoid motorways & tolls" was quoting travel times from a different routing engine than every other route on screen. Checked on 29 real journeys over 350 km across six continents, plus ferries, islands and toll bridges.

Also in this build:
• Four relays instead of two, each verified to really store and serve Roadstr events — reports go to all of them, and all four are asked at once, so redundancy costs no waiting
• "My reports" is no longer empty: the profile was asking a single relay that kept refusing connections
• No more crash when updating the speed limit on one of your speed camera reports
• Restricted traffic zone (ZTL/ZAC) warning is back on screen
• Speed limit sign no longer hangs around after the route preview
• The map moves the moment you open it, instead of waiting for a cold GPS lock

I'm on a long trip as well, noticed that when for a reason or another, the cursor does not linger over the polyline. This somehow tricks the navigation routing into thinking that you're still on course but have to go back to trip the point where the cursor is expected to pass.
I momentarily fixed it by restarting the routing, but it's obviously an issue that needs addressing.

Fixed a bug that made ZTL detection silently fail since the feature shipped. The Overpass query used ["name"~"ZTL","i"] — the quoted "i" is a syntax error in Overpass QL (case-insensitive regex needs an unquoted ,i), so every ZTL fetch failed, on every mirror, from day one.
Rewrote ZTL detection to match how Italian zones are actually mapped. Italian ZTLs are tagged per-street (motor_vehicle=permit, access=no/destination, highway=pedestrian), not as named polygons — the old polygon-only query returned nothing even after the syntax fix. Detection is now proximity-based (≤12 m from a restricted way) in addition to the legacy polygon lookup, verified live against Ravenna's centro storico (251 restricted ways) and cross-checked against the ~350 Italian cities that do use the official boundary=limited_traffic_zone polygon tag.
Removed the overpass.osm.ch mirror. It turned out to be a Switzerland-only data extract that returned HTTP 200 with zero results for anywhere else — every dependent feature (ZTL, speed limits, speed cameras, POI search) silently read that as "nothing here." Replaced with two verified worldwide mirrors.
Verified live against 24 cities worldwide (12 European historic centres, 12 US cities/car-free towns) to check the new detection actually generalises rather than just fixing Italy. Works well anywhere OSM has restricted-access tagging; known gap where a town's equivalent has never been mapped by the local OSM community (e.g. Tangier Island, VA); intentionally does not flag toll-only zones (NYC congestion pricing, London ULEZ) as ZTL, since those don't restrict entry.
The warning banner now shows the correct local term instead of the Italian "ZTL" everywhere — "ZTL" in Italy and France (both use the same official term), "ZAC" in Portugal, a generic translated phrase elsewhere. Countries with no single official acronym (Spain, Germany, UK…) no longer get one invented for them.
Fixed the spoken ZTL warning, which previously had translations for only 9 of the app's 27 languages and silently fell back to English for the rest.
Navigation
Map no longer flips 180° mid-drive. A GPS multipath glitch could teleport a fix 20+ m backward with an inverted bearing, slipping past the existing distance-based filter. A direction reversal during active navigation is now trusted only after two consecutive GPS samples agree on it — a real U-turn confirms itself on the next fix, a glitch doesn't.
Voice no longer repeats the same instruction 3–4 times on approach to a manoeuvre. The same normalised instruction is now suppressed for 12 seconds at the single choke-point every announcement passes through.
Navigation cursor sits further down the screen, trading a bit of "behind you" for more visible road ahead.
Renamed the button on the pin/place-info panels from "Start navigation" (which actually opened a route preview) to "Show route preview" — "Start navigation" now only appears where navigation genuinely starts.
Security
A malicious relay could have redirected Lightning zaps to its own wallet. fetchLightningAddress trusted a relay's kind-0 profile event without checking its id hash, signature, or that the pubkey matched the person being zapped — fixed by verifying every profile event the same way road events already were.
Logging out no longer destroys local data. It previously called deleteAll() on secure storage, wiping the encrypted-settings key along with it — undecryptable on next launch, silently taking favourites, history and routing/NWC config with it. Logout now removes only the 5 Nostr-identity keys.
One-time report/confirmation fetches (profile screen) now verify event signatures and enforce one-vote-per-identity, matching the live subscription's rules — previously trusted unverified relay data and allowed repeat votes.
Amber (NIP-55) event publishing now broadcasts to all configured relays instead of only the primary one, matching nsec-login behaviour.
NIP-44 decryption now enforces the exact padded length the spec prescribes, rejecting malformed payloads other implementations would also refuse.
Consolidated three duplicated event-verification implementations into one shared, tested helper.

Speed limits now come from Overpass, with class-based inference (motorway/trunk/residential/living_street) for the many roads that have no explicit `maxspeed` tag, 3 rotating mirrors for reliability, and support in free-roam driving (not just active navigation).
- **Recenter button** now pulls a fresh one-shot GPS fix instead of reusing the last stream sample, so it snaps to your *actual* current position.
- **Compass/heading button** is a real toggle in both navigation and free-roam — free-roam heading-up mode now rotates the map with the magnetometer instead of doing nothing.

This is gold, thanks man. I am still working on the istructions, they still come either too early or they overlap with each other, i gotta think of a logic to impart to be more precise. But the 3km alert I did it on purpose. When traveling long distances on highways, IMO it makes sense to have an early alert and then another alert 250m beforehand.
The premature end is another thing that I'm testing. This morning results were promising, but I only tested on a 5km city trip.

The annoying bug of starting on x road should be already fixed, but further testing is needed.

Great feedback overall, I'm gonna work on those improvements. Thanks again!

I encountered these issues as well, I am working to fix them, especially the re-routing and and voice issue.
As for the auto dark, as of now there is a toggle to switch it on and off manually, I'll think of a better solution to give more control to the user.
Imperial will be implemented with tonight's update.

As for avoid tolls and such, afaik OSM doesn't manage those, so the user will have to switch to GraphHopper provider. There is a free API key with 500 "calls" or a paid plan.
I'll be working on those too as well, hoping to provide a free and open alternative.

Ps. Be careful, it's still a beta so drive safe!
