3. Bitcoin stays down until December and they roll over the loan on punitive terms that reduces their stack quicker than they are now. They would likely have to sell some Bitcoin because they're not getting $210M in loans in this scenario.

There's really only one way for things to go right:

Bitcoin price goes up massively by December.

Even then, the interest payments and operations expenses will likely destroy a ton of value.

The lesson here isn't to dunk on the company. It's just showing you how fragile leveraged positions are. You can have the world's most pristine asset and still lose if the market moves against you.

I appreciate your interaction; this is a conversation well worth having.

There are many "logical reasons" for rational humans to view the state as enemy, but this meme is explicitly focused on following in Jesus' footsteps. Admittedly, it presents this truth in shorthand. However, Jesus was in fact (and still is) Enemy Number One of the state, and I can offer as many proofs as you may be willing to consider.

Jesus' remark to Pilate is a proof-text that doesn't adequately support your counter-assertion that Jesus is "acknowledging the authority of the state." The English word "authority" is a poor translation of the Greek word "exousia (ἐξουσία)," which would be better rendered as "power" in most biblical contexts. As should be obvious, even in the immediate context, "exousia" carries no connotation of legitimacy (consider your own observation that Pilate himself knew Jesus to be innocent, yet he proceeded to execute him).

It should also be logically obvious to any righteous man that an entity willing to murder for the sake of “the greater good” is evil and must needs be seen as the enemy it is.

If you care to discuss this further in good faith, we ought to have some common ground agreement on definitions. Can we strive to understand one another, rather than talk past each other?🙏😀

The architects of Digital ID systems present their project in the language of rights and inclusion. You will be empowered to access services and protected from fraud, not to mention that you will be liberated from the onerous burden of carrying physical documents. The credential is yours and the system is voluntary. This language conceals a logical inversion of the first order.

A right, properly understood, is a claim that does not depend on permission. The right to speak, to move, to transact, to exist economically, these are not grants from the State, they are properties of persons that the State is supposed to protect, not administer. The moment your right to participate in the economy is mediated by a government-issued digital credential, it has ceased to be a right and has now become a license, and a license, by definition, can be revoked.

A Solution in Search of a Problem

Let us begin with the most basic question: what problem, precisely, does Digital ID solve?

You already have a passport and you already have a driver’s licence. You already exist in the ledgers of the state. You are not invisible and the government knows exactly who you are. So when they tell you that Digital ID is about identity verification, they are lying to you. This is not about confirming that you are who you say you are. That problem was solved decades ago. This is about something far more sinister, which is the consolidation of every fragment of your identity, your behaviour, your transactions, and your compliance record into a single, state-controlled digital profile that follows you from cradle to grave.

What you already have is irrelevant. That is the point. They are demanding that you surrender your analogue autonomy and accept, in its place, a digital identity that they control, that they can modify, that they can suspend, and that they can revoke.

Your Body as the Key

Every totalitarian architecture in history has been introduced with the language of efficiency. The Soviet propiska system, internal passports that controlled where citizens could live and work, was sold as population management. China’s Social Credit System was pitched as a tool to build a “harmonious society.” The vaccine passport was framed as a temporary public health measure to keep you safe, to keep grandma safe, to get us back to normal. Gradually with time it quietly morphed into the infrastructure for something else entirely; a proof-of-concept for permissioned movement, permissioned commerce, permissioned existence.

Here is the reality that the powers that be are actively obscuring; Digital ID does not merely identify you. It turns your body into the access key to your own life.

Your face, your fingerprints, your voice, your gait become the new keys. These are not passwords that can be changed should the database be breached. You cannot revoke them if the government abuses them. When your biometric data sits in a government database and that data is the key to accessing your bank account, your medical records, your benefits, your rental agreement, your right to work; your body has ceased to be your own property and has become state property. Your hand, your face, your eye, become the new interfaces between you and permission, and permission is granted by the state.

Every person is the sovereign owner of their own body. This is not a legal construct but it is a moral fact that precedes all law, all government, all social contract. You did not consent to be born into a political jurisdiction. Neither did you sign a document agreeing to have your biometric data harvested, stored, and used as the gatekeeper of your access to commerce and public life. The state has no legitimate claim on your body and any system that converts your biological uniqueness into a state-administered credential is an act of dispossession and enslavement. The abolitionists understood this. The horror of slavery was not merely forced labour, but it was the reduction of a person to an object of state-sanctioned ownership.

Digital ID does not enslave bodies in the old sense, but it converts the body into a node in a state-managed network, whose access privileges can be suspended, or revoked by bureaucratic decision. Just imagine a scenario where the Home Secretary or Minister of the Interior has the right to revoke your ID at any time. Your ability to withdraw money, to travel, to exist in the economy in the hands of a bureaucrat. Is that a world you want to live in? Is that the kind of world you want your children to live in?

The Voluntary Illusion

“It will be voluntary.” This sentence has appeared in every government briefing, every ministerial statement, every press release about the UK’s Digital Access to Services Bill. It has become a kind of liturgy, which is repeated often enough that the repetition is supposed to be a substitute for the truth.

Let us examine what “voluntary” means in practice. The government has already stated that digital ID will be used for right-to-work checks. Once employers are permitted to use it, even if not compelled to, the labour market will rapidly consolidate around it. Employers prefer it: it is faster, cheaper, legally indemnifying. Workers who refuse to provide digital ID will find themselves systematically disadvantaged. “Voluntary” will mean: you can refuse, but you will not get the job.

The same logic applies to every other service. Banks that are permitted to use digital ID for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance will adopt it enthusiastically as it reduces their costs and legal liability. They will retain paper alternatives technically, but the customer service infrastructure for those alternatives will wither. The queues will be longer, more physical branches will close and the forms will be more onerous. “Voluntary” will mean: you can choose the harder path, but you will be punished for it in a thousand small, but plausibly deniable ways.

This is how coercion operates in a sophisticated administrative state. It does not need to issue a direct order but it has to make compliance convenient and refusal inconvenient and then expand the definition of “inconvenient” incrementally, over years, until the choice has effectively disappeared. The generation that comes of age after digital ID is normalised will not experience it as a constraint. They will experience its absence as an inconvenience; the same way Millennials experience cash payments, or the way anyone under thirty experiences a paper map. The infrastructure of coercion becomes invisible once it becomes ambient.

The validity of a choice is not determined by whether a coercive alternative exists, but by whether the choice is made without coercion in the first place. A system that makes refusal progressively more painful is not offering you a free choice. It is offering you a slow squeeze. The British government, which received three million signatures asking it not to build the squeeze mechanism, (based on King Charles’ proclamation) has decided that it knows better than three million of its own citizens what those citizens really need.

The Global Pattern

Britain is not alone in this. It is not even at the frontier. The EU’s digital identity wallet, the eIDAS framework, is already being rolled out across member states. India’s Aadhaar system, which biometrically enrolled over a billion people into a central database, has been linked to bank accounts, welfare payments, mobile phones, and tax records, creating exactly the comprehensive surveillance dossier that many lovers of liberty predicted and its architects denied. Canada’s federal government has also been developing a trust framework.

The citizen who imagines that a voluntary scheme launched by a progressive government in 2026 will remain voluntary under a different government in 2030 or 2034 or 2040 is making an astonishing bet, one that contradicts every lesson of political history. The powers built by one government are inherited by the next. The database built to verify your right to work will be available to the government that wants to verify your political associations. The infrastructure built to make your NHS appointment easier is the infrastructure that, under different management, tracks your attendance at protests and subtracts it from your social credit.

You do not get to control what future governments do with the infrastructure you allow current governments to build. You only get to decide whether the infrastructure gets built.

How Digital ID Exports Itself

Assuming that since you don’t live in the UK or Australia you need not be concerned about this, is self delusion of the highest order. These systems may be getting rolled out in isolation and in different pockets of the world but ultimately they are going to converge into what I call the “mark of the beast system” or the New World Order.

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation applies, in law, only within the European Union. In practice, it applies to every company on earth that wants to sell to, employ, or process the data of a European citizen. A small software firm in Lagos, a retail business in São Paulo, an e-commerce startup in Bangalore; none of them are European entities, none of them are subject to EU law in any direct constitutional sense. Yet all of them have had to rewrite their privacy policies, appoint data protection officers, and restructure their data infrastructure because the alternative is exclusion from the European market. GDPR is, formally, a domestic regulation. Functionally, it is a global law imposed through market access.

Digital ID will follow the same pattern as outlined above. Digital ID slots into this architecture as its missing identity layer and once any major trading bloc makes it a verification standard for cross-border commerce, the voluntary fiction collapses entirely. The EU has already signalled that its digital identity wallet framework, the eIDAS regulation, will become the standard for accessing European digital services. The logic that follows is inescapable: if a British exporter wants to access an EU digital marketplace, and that marketplace requires eIDAS-compatible identity verification, then British businesses will need a compatible digital ID not because Parliament mandated it, but because the alternative is exclusion from trade.

The mechanism is always the same. First, the standard is embedded in the compliance requirements of the dominant trading bloc. Second, private companies like banks, logistics firms, insurers, supermarket chains, adopt the standard because their access to that bloc depends on it. Third, their counterparties anywhere in the world must meet the same standard as a condition of doing business with those companies.

The coercion never has to be direct. It travels through correspondent banking chains, supply chain due diligence requirements, and insurance underwriting criteria. By the time it reaches a farmer in India or a business owner in Lagos, it feels like market conditions. It feels like just the way things work.

The small British exporter who declines a Digital ID will find their bank applying enhanced due diligence. The freelancer who opts out will find European platforms defaulting to identity-verified users. The self-employed tradesperson will find the government contracts, the insurance products, and the business banking gradually excluding him. The architecture simply makes staying outside of it increasingly cold.

The State as Mechanism, Not Myth

In order to fully understand what Digital IDs are truly being rolled out for, one must first understand what the State truly is, not as civics class presents it, as a neutral arbiter of the common good, but as it operates in fact: as a coercive monopolist that derives its power from the exclusive, unchallengeable control of certain functions, and that survives by continuously expanding the domain of those functions. The State does not serve the people; it parasitizes them while persuading them that the parasitism is service. Just like all organisms whose survival depends on extraction, it has one inexorable drive, which is to expand its domain of legibility and control.

Legibility is the operative word. The historian James C. Scott, in Seeing Like a State, demonstrated that the central preoccupation of all modern states is making their subjects readable, which means reducing the complexity of actual human life to standardized categories, numbers, names, addresses, and identifiers that can be tabulated, surveilled, and administered. The State cannot tax what it cannot see. It cannot conscript what it cannot count and it cannot control what it cannot identify. The history of state power is, at its core, a history of the progressive legibility of human beings.

Digital ID is not a new idea dressed in modern technology. It is the culmination of centuries of that same drive, the fullest expression yet of the State’s desire to make every subject permanently, unambiguously, and inescapably known.

The CBDC as the Completion of the Project

There is an additional piece of this architecture that the government does not discuss when it talks about digital ID, because the discussion would make the agenda too visible. That piece is the Central Bank Digital Currency, the CBDC.

Central Bank Digital Currencies are state-issued digital money, held not in commercial bank accounts but directly with the central bank, and programmable. A CBDC without digital ID is a car without an ignition. The two are designed for each other. The CBDC requires a verified digital identity to function, to know who holds the wallet, who is transacting, who should be permitted to buy what. Digital ID, in turn, becomes the key that unlocks or locks your access to the monetary system. When your identity is digital and your money is digital and both are administered by the same state, the coercive potential is total and instantaneous.

Cash has always been the refuge from financial exclusion. When every other avenue of private economic life was closed, you could still hand someone a banknote and the transaction would exist between the two of you alone. The State has always understood this, which is why every decade brings new restrictions on cash transactions, new reporting requirements, new “suspicious activity” thresholds that creep steadily downward. The war on cash is a deliberate diabolical policy, pursued across jurisdictions, with the explicit goal of making all economic activity visible.

A CBDC completes this project. It eliminates cash not through prohibition but through obsolescence; by providing a “convenient,” “secure,” “government-backed” digital alternative. The ECB’s own design for the digital euro includes offline payment caps that force routine spending into fully traceable online modes. Academic critics and EU Parliament members have both noted that combined with AI analytics, real-time transaction data could enable social profiling at a scale no previous monetary system permitted.

No more seizing bank accounts the slow, legally contested way. No more requiring court orders to freeze assets. Just a flag on a database, a status change in a system, and suddenly a dissident journalist, an anti-government protester, a vaccine refuser, a political donor to the wrong party, cannot buy food or pay rent. The system is already built for this but the only thing missing is the centralised identity layer that links the human body to the wallet. Digital ID completes the circuit.

Trust-minimized systems, systems where the rules are enforced by mathematics and decentralized consensus rather than by human institutions, are categorically different from trust-based systems in their relationship to power. Every trust-based financial system has a chokepoint, which could be a person, institution, or authority whose cooperation is required for the system to function, and who can therefore be coerced, corrupted, or captured. The entire history of financial censorship from sanctions, asset freezes, account closures, to debanking; is a history of exploiting those chokepoints. A CBDC does not merely preserve those chokepoints. It concentrates them into a single, central, government-controlled node. It is the maximally trust-based financial system.

Bitcoin As A Counterforce

Against this architecture, Bitcoin stands not merely as an alternative currency but as an alternative proposition to the status quo. Sovereign human individuals can create and operate a trust-minimized monetary system that no authority can shut down or inflate and that no corporation can deplatform.

The economic value of a trust-minimized system derives from precisely this property: the removal of the chokepoint. A system with no chokepoint cannot be coerced by any third party. A monetary network with no gatekeeper cannot be weaponized against its users by any external authority.

Bitcoin does not ask the State for permission to exist. It does not ask you for identity documents before it will process your transaction. It does not care about your nationality, your credit score, your political views, or the compliance status of your wallet address. It is radically incompatible with the fiat monopoly because it is a monetary system that successfully circumvents the State’s foundational claim; that it alone may issue and control money.

This is why Bitcoin, at the peer-to-peer, self-custodied protocol level, is not reformable into the surveillance architecture being built around it. The on-ramps (exchanges, custodians, fiat gateways) are chokepoints that can be regulated, KYC’d, and monitored. The banking relationships of Bitcoin businesses can be severed. These are real and significant pressures, but the network itself remains. A person who holds their own keys, who transacts through non-custodial channels, who understands what they are doing and why, remains outside the panopticon by using a technology that the State cannot switch off.

The Existential Incompatibility

A system of total financial legibility (universal Digital ID, mandatory KYC on all fiat-crypto conversions, programmable CBDCs, AI-driven transaction monitoring) and a genuinely permissionless, uncensorable monetary network cannot coexist indefinitely as equals. They are not competing products. They are incompatible political propositions. One holds that the individual is sovereign over their economic life and may transact with whom they choose without requiring state permission. The other holds that all economic participation is conditional on state-granted identity and state-approved compliance status.

The State does not tolerate genuine competition in its core monopolies. It has not tolerated alternative currencies historically, from the criminalization of private gold ownership in Roosevelt’s America to the systematic debanking of crypto businesses in Operation Chokepoint 2.0. It will not tolerate an alternative monetary system that cannot be brought within its framework of control. The question is not whether pressure will be applied. It already is. The question is whether the pressure will succeed and on that question, the answer depends entirely on how many people understand what is at stake and act accordingly.

The path of least resistance for states is not outright prohibition, which generates resistance and is technically difficult. It is progressive capture: requiring Digital ID for all exchange onboarding, restricting self-hosted wallets through Travel Rule enforcement, making it increasingly difficult to exchange Bitcoin for goods and services in the formal economy, and simultaneously normalizing the CBDC as the convenient alternative. The Python doesn’t crush the prey immediately. It applies steady pressure and waits.

Conclusion: The Last Instrument

The construction of Digital ID systems, and CBDC infrastructure, is not a collection of unrelated regulatory initiatives. It is a coherent, cumulative project: the completion of the State’s centuries-long ambition to make every subject and every transaction permanently legible. Bitcoin represents the opposing proposition: that money is a tool of persons, not states; that the right to transact is prior to and independent of state permission; that a trust-minimized system governed by mathematics and voluntary consensus is not merely preferable to a trust-based system governed by institutional power but categorically different from it in the political freedom it enables.

The person who holds their own Bitcoin keys is beyond a specific axis of the State’s power. Their wealth cannot be inflated away by a central bank, their transactions cannot be censored by a compliance officer. They are, in that domain, genuinely sovereign, perhaps for the first time in the history of money.

There is no version of a universal Digital ID system that is compatible with a free society. There is no sufficiently robust data protection regime that makes centralised, biometrically linked, state-controlled identity safe. There is no trustworthy government of any party or of any era, to whom you should hand the master key to your existence.

What remains is the question that has always animated the conflict between individual sovereignty and institutional power: will the instrument of freedom remain in the hands of those who understand its value or will it be slowly encircled, captured, and made compliant until it is merely another node in the panopticon? The answer will be written in the choices of the people who understand what is being built, what is being lost, and what it means to refuse.

Libertarians groan. The question has become a meme, a drinking game trigger, shorthand for the statist imagination's outer limit. Yet the groaning misses what makes the question genuinely interesting. The puzzle is not how to answer it. The puzzle is why it gets asked at all.

Consider a parallel question nobody asks: "Who will bake the bread?"

Bread is more essential to human survival than roads. Civilizations existed for millennia without paved roads; none lasted a week without food. Yet nobody lies awake worrying about bread provision. No one suggests the government must monopolize bakeries lest we all starve. The question sounds absurd the moment you formulate it.

Why does "who will build the roads?" seem reasonable while "who will bake the bread?" sounds ridiculous? The difference has nothing to do with the inherent nature of roads versus bread. Both are goods that humans value and will pay to obtain. Both require coordination of labor and capital. Both involve complex logistics. The difference is entirely a product of who currently provides each good.

Bread is private. It works. So thoroughly does it work that people forget to notice. Roads are government monopolized. They fail. So thoroughly are they monopolized that people cannot imagine alternatives.

The roads question reveals something profound about what monopoly does to human cognition. We cannot conceive of alternatives to what we have never experienced. The question is not evidence of the impossibility of private roads. It is evidence of the state's success in capturing the imagination.

The Forgotten History

Private roads are not theoretical speculation. They are documented historical reality.

In England, turnpike trusts administered over 30,000 miles of road by the 1830s. These were private organizations authorized by Parliament to build and maintain toll roads. They financed construction through bonds, paid investors from toll revenue, and competed for traffic. The results transformed the nation. Travel time from London to Edinburgh dropped from twelve days to four. Freight charges fell over forty percent. Engineers like Thomas Telford and John Loudon McAdam, employed by trusts, developed the road construction techniques whose descendants we still use.

The system worked so well that even Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx's collaborator and no friend to private enterprise, documented it approvingly. In 1845 he wrote that England "is now covered by a network of the finest roadways; and these, too, like almost everything else in England, are the work of private enterprise, the State having done very little in this direction."

In America, between 2,500 and 3,200 private turnpike companies successfully financed, built, and operated toll roads in the nineteenth century. Relative to the economy of that era, this private road network exceeded the post-World War II interstate highway system. Capital came from local businessmen and property owners who stood to benefit from improved transportation. The companies charged more for heavier vehicles and wider wheels, demonstrating sophisticated price discrimination. They adjusted tolls to attract traffic. They maintained their roads or lost customers to competitors.

The American turnpikes were mostly unprofitable as direct investments. Dividends were rare. Yet investors kept funding them. Why? Because the indirect benefits, increased property values, expanded markets, reduced transportation costs, vastly exceeded the direct financial return. The question was never "will someone build roads?" but "how quickly can we get them built?"

When people ask "who will build the roads?" they are asking a question that history has already answered. Those who benefit from roads, businesses, property owners, travelers, have consistently demonstrated willingness to fund their construction without coercion.

The Present Catastrophe

What ended the private road era was not market failure but government intervention. As states expanded their taxing power and claimed roads as their domain, private provision was crowded out. The result surrounds us.

Approximately forty thousand Americans die on government roads every year. Between 1899 and 2023, the cumulative toll exceeded four million fatalities. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of preventable death for Americans aged five to twenty-two. The United States consistently underperforms peer nations on traffic safety despite spending more on roads.

Consider what these numbers mean. Every year, government roads kill more Americans than died in the entire Vietnam War. Every decade, they kill more than died in World War II. This is not natural disaster or act of God. It is the outcome of decisions made by government road managers who face no consequences for these deaths.

If a private company operated a product killing forty thousand customers annually, it would face massive tort liability, criminal prosecution, consumer boycotts, and competitive displacement. The company would either fix the problem or cease to exist. Government road authorities face none of these pressures. The same agencies that fail to prevent the slaughter collect the same tax revenue regardless of performance.

And yet people ask: who will build the roads?

The question reveals something beyond mere ignorance of history or economics. It reveals the depth of imaginative capture. Despite forty thousand annual deaths, despite congestion that wastes millions of hours, despite potholes and construction delays and every daily frustration of American road travel, people cannot conceive of alternatives to the entity causing these failures. The state has monopolized not just roads but the very capacity to imagine roads being provided differently.

The Manufacture of Dependency

This imaginative paralysis is not accidental. It is the product of deliberate design, implemented over generations through institutions purpose-built to create compliant subjects who cannot imagine life without their masters.

The modern government school traces its lineage to early nineteenth-century Prussia. After Napoleon humiliated the Prussian army, the state's intellectuals diagnosed the problem not as military incompetence but as excessive independent thinking among the citizenry. Johann Gottlieb Fichte, the philosopher who designed Prussia's "new education," stated his aim explicitly: the destruction of free will. Schools would be factories producing obedient soldiers and workers who would not question authority.

The Prussian system sorted children by age into standardized classrooms, subjected them to standardized curricula, and evaluated them through standardized tests. At the bottom tier, the Volksschulen or "people's schools" served ninety-two to ninety-four percent of the population. These schools heavily discounted reading because "reading produced dissatisfaction," offering too many windows onto better lives and better ways of thinking. The goal was not education but obedience: loyal soldiers for the army, compliant workers for factories and farms, citizens who thought alike on most issues, national uniformity in thought, word, and deed.

American reformers imported this system deliberately. Horace Mann, the "father of American public education," toured Prussia in 1843 and returned infatuated with its methods. Within decades, Massachusetts had compulsory attendance laws. By 1918, every state did. The Prussian model had conquered America.

The results are visible in the roads question itself. After twelve years of mandatory attendance in government institutions, students graduate unable to imagine how society might function without government direction. This is not a failure of the system. It is its purpose. As one Prussian-era observer noted, the system was "shaped with the express purpose of making ninety-five out of every hundred citizens subservient to the ruling house and to the state."

Recent scholarship confirms the pattern. Agustina Paglayan's research, published in the American Political Science Review, demonstrates that public primary schools were created by states specifically to reinforce obedience and maintain social order, not to enable upward mobility. Her analysis of data from forty countries shows education reforms consistently following periods of social unrest, with elites expanding schooling to indoctrinate future citizens to accept the status quo. Thomas Jefferson himself, after Shays' Rebellion, wrote to James Madison that schools should teach citizens that violence is illegitimate for expressing discontent, that they should instead express it by voting.

The mechanism is learned helplessness. When people repeatedly experience situations where their actions produce no meaningful change, they stop trying even when change becomes possible. The psychologist Martin Seligman, who discovered this phenomenon, observed that welfare systems create precisely this dynamic: "an institution that undermines the dignity of its recipients because their actions do not produce their source of livelihood."

Government schools produce the same effect regarding imagination about social organization. Children spend twelve years in institutions where they have no choice about attendance, no choice about curriculum, no choice about pace or method, and limited choice even about bodily functions. They are rewarded for compliance and punished for questioning. They emerge believing that someone must be in charge, that order requires commands, that complex social arrangements need central direction.

Then they ask: who will build the roads?

The Pattern Repeats

The roads question is merely the most visible symptom of a deeper condition. The same learned helplessness that makes people unable to imagine private roads makes them unable to imagine private money, private courts, private defense, private education itself.

Consider how the pattern works. The state monopolizes a service. Quality declines and costs rise, as they must when providers face no competitive pressure. People become frustrated but cannot imagine alternatives because they have never experienced them and have been educated to believe alternatives impossible. When someone suggests privatization, the response is always the same: "But who will provide X?"

Who will educate the children? Private tutors, religious schools, and home education produced higher literacy rates in colonial America than government schools produce today. Who will deliver the mail? Federal Express and UPS already outperform the postal service on every metric except the one protected by law. Who will maintain order? Private security guards already outnumber government police in America.

The state's power rests not primarily on guns but on imagination. It rules because people cannot conceive of being ruled differently or not at all. Every child who passes through government schools emerges with the unexamined assumption that government is necessary for civilization to function. This assumption is false, but its falsity cannot be perceived by those trained from age five to believe otherwise.

The bread analogy exposes the absurdity. Something as essential as food, more essential than transportation by any reasonable measure, is entrusted entirely to private provision. Markets coordinate wheat farming in Kansas, milling in Minnesota, baking in thousands of local bakeries, transportation and retail, without any central authority directing the process. The result is bread available everywhere, in varieties suited to local preferences, at prices that even the poor can afford.

If someone proposed that the government must monopolize bakeries because bread is too important to leave to market anarchy, they would be laughed out of the room. Yet the identical argument, applied to roads, sounds reasonable to most people.

The difference is entirely that people have experienced private bread and government roads, but not the reverse. And they have been educated, by institutions designed to produce this result, to believe that what they have experienced is all that is possible.

The Real Question

The question should be inverted. The real question is not who will build roads without government but why anyone would entrust road provision to an entity that kills forty thousand annually without consequence, that cannot allocate road space efficiently enough to prevent daily gridlock, that treats maintenance as an afterthought and construction as a patronage opportunity.

The real question is why something as important as transportation should be left to monopolistic central planners who face no competitive pressure, possess no relevant price information, and bear no consequences for failure.

The bread analogy provides the answer. We do not entrust bread to government monopoly precisely because bread is important. The same logic applies to roads. Something this essential, this central to economic life, this consequential in its daily operation, is too important to be managed by an entity structurally incapable of managing it well.

The people who would build the roads are the same people who build everything else that works: free individuals coordinating through markets, responding to price signals, bearing consequences for their decisions, competing for customers by offering better service at lower cost.

History proves they can do it. The turnpike era demonstrates what free people accomplish when permitted to solve problems without state direction. Present catastrophe demonstrates what happens when they are prevented from doing so.

The only remaining question is whether enough people can escape the imaginative prison built for them since childhood. Whether they can recognize that the inability to conceive of alternatives is not evidence that alternatives are impossible, but evidence that the indoctrination worked.

Free men built thirty thousand miles of roads in England. Free men built thousands of turnpikes across America. Free men will build the roads again, if only they remember that they can.
