I hope you're doing good and are healthy wherever you might be.

They say idle hands are the devil’s playground, and I have so many projects waiting for me but, like most people, not nearly enough time. But that’s another conversation.

Anyway, I kept myself busy last week and this week too with a project I’ve been coming back to for quite a while. I’m so happy I finally made the time to make it real!

When I stumbled upon this project, I was very excited about it, Using NeoPixels with the Raspberry Pi. I thought, “Maybe instead I could make a sunrise lamp.”

And boy, was it a journey.

Even before I started researching, I thought the best Raspberry Pi for such a simple project would be a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one, so I decided to go with the next best option especially since I was already brainstorming what else I could do with it besides the sunrise lamp. So I got a Raspberry Pi 3 B+.

Let me walk you through it.

First, it was a bit of a nightmare to install the OS. I don’t know why I struggle with that part and with passwords. I type passwords the way R. L. Stine writes his stories: with just one finger. Either way, I finally managed to install everything and connect to the Wi-Fi.

I knew I would eventually need an electrolytic capacitor and one of those logic level shifters, but for the first trials—just trying to get the Pi and the LEDs working—I left those for later.

I also need a proper power supply for the LEDs themselves. I’m still not entirely sure, since it’s only 32 LEDs, but we’ll see. The preventive side of me will probably end up getting one anyway.

I had to test the first LED strip, but first I had to connect everything to the right GPIO pins and solder the wires. Usually my husband helps me with this part, but he only helped me with the first strip. After that, I was all on my own.

I didn’t know soldering would be as challenging as stripping the wires, but once I got the hang of it, things went much more smoothly.

I did a lot of the research and troubleshooting myself, and for the scripts I also tried a bit of vibe coding. But hey, I was still the one soldering, wiring everything up, testing it, and figuring out what was going wrong. Then I ran the test and… it worked!

But then, of course, came the real challenge... soldering everything together! All the wires and the LED strips.

I had to use the headlamp I use when walking my doggie, and next time I’ll definitely need a magnifying glass. I had to squint from time to time just to make sure I was soldering in the right place.

I managed to do the devil’s work, I mean, my project, and then I used another script. But before that, I had to install Python in a virtual environment, because otherwise it wouldn’t let me install rpi_ws281x.

It seems this way is easier to update and keep contained, and it doesn’t affect the rest of the Pi. Also, this time I did everything directly in the terminal. I didn’t use Thonny this time!

So many firsts with this project.

Anyway, in the end, my soldering and the script worked together beautifully!

A sunset right there just for me!

Throughout all this testing, I kept sniffing the Pi and the GPIO area from time to time, just in case I had connected something wrong. After all, powering the LEDs directly from the Pi could be too much for it.

Slowly but surely, I was able to turn the LEDs on and off first. Then I added the sunrise and sunset scripts.

After that, I moved on to the web server. Since I had already dipped my toes into this with my Raspberrarium, I decided this time it wouldn’t just show me information, it would also have buttons to control the LEDs.

Then I added a “reading mode,” a “fun mode,” and a “relax mode.”

Reading mode

I got super excited watching the first sunset that day. Every five minutes, I would just look at the LEDs slowly dimming.

This week, I added a few more buttons to the web server: some colors, dimming controls, and “demos” of the sunrise and sunset scripts.

Sunset and Sunrise have buttons though they are running automatically in the background. I still kept them because it reminds me of how this project started.

What a ride it was!

Rainbow mode

And I’m not finished yet. This is still a work in progress, and I’ll add a few more things. I’m so happy with it.

I feel like a wizard.

So, see you later, alligator!

https://stacker.news/items/1596388

2026-10-16T16:46:42Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsteaq9s2durjlpyllpxmqx27fccuqjqwr5qt900hm2lwhh9d6g6cgzyp4xhermkyhjrhvq78hnlhegf5f29yc5e6svd8d4angy4df7wn37z4llzt4 ❤️🔮🦄

quoting
naddr1qq…evhf

Well, well, well… here I am, drinking my matcha with hazelnut milk and, of course, some collagen, just enjoying this little moment.

Life is whimsical and I'm grateful.

I hope you’re doing swell over there too: having your favourite beverage, enjoying the small moments, rejoicing in the mundane… and then buckling up for what I’ve been watching and reading lately. As usual, in no particular order.

I read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and I was smitten. The colours, the drawings, the story, oh my, oh my, I really loved it. I only picked it up because I heard there was a movie inspired by it, but from the posters I’ve seen, it seems like a disservice, at least to that gorgeous colour palette. I don’t even want to imagine how they adapted the story.

But if you can, read it. It’s such a sweet, short story, and it absolutely made me teary at the end. I fell in love not only with Supergirl but with the storyteller too. Totally recommend it.

I also read Supergirl: Universe End and Supergirl: Who Is Superwoman? I didn’t enjoy them quite as much as the first one, but they were a nice way to keep getting to know her, I guess. Woman of Tomorrow left me with very high expectations for Supergirl’s stories, so I’m still looking for a new comic to read from her. If you know one, let me know!

I also reread some of Lovecraft’s stories. If you’d like to check out the blog entry I wrote about him and the illustrations I created, come this way.

Since ’tis the season for something spooky, I kept leaning into it, of course. I also read Rewitched by Lucy Jane Wood and So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison.

They’re both on the same theme: thirty-something women, pretty much depressed and upset about how their lives have turned out, resentful about it but not really doing anything about it. Then a little magic comes their way, they discover there’s something beyond all the pessimism and self-deprecating jokes, and that's it, there’s the book.

Rewitched is about a witch literally rediscovering her magic, while So Thirsty is about a woman rediscovering herself in another way. Still, both are books about becoming conscious of and accountable for your actions. It’s a self-discovery journey with some spookiness and quirkiness in massive amounts.

The smarty-pants (and very pessimistic) jokes sometimes made it difficult to keep reading, especially when they broke the magic or distracted me from what was actually funny, interesting, and entertaining. There were times where the characters were actually being vulnerable and relatable, and they could have left it like that, but no they didn't and sometimes it was a wee too much. Overall, they were okay, I guess.

As for movies, I watched Thanksgiving, and I loved it! Oh, I love a good horror holiday movie with some good splatter.

I wanted to watch more movies like that, and I stumbled upon It's A Wonderful Knife. The title is kind of self-explanatory: it’s like It’s a Wonderful Life, but with knives and murders.

I love that in both films you get to see actors who were once the kids—the young ones—and now they’re the adults. Also delightful. I enjoyed them both.

And now I’m watching this new Carrie adaptation. So far, so good… well, not for Carrie, though.

I read the book many moons ago, and the last time I watched an adaptation—the one from the ’70s, I think—was also a very long time ago. I only remember the “crucial” bits, so it’ll feel almost like watching it for the first time, which is exciting.

Anyway: what have you been watching or reading? I’d love to know if there’s anything you’d recommend to me.

See you later, alligator 🐊

Godspeed ✨

https://stacker.news/items/1595055

2026-10-14T20:31:12Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsf2jphc3qvu6kr9afg9sw0hrkt4dmk8c025lrgecjq67hf7an7axszyp4xhermkyhjrhvq78hnlhegf5f29yc5e6svd8d4angy4df7wn37zzysjc2 GM folks 🦄🪴🌱

quoting
naddr1qq…tug6

I hope your weekend was refreshing, comfortable, and all those soul- and heart-replenishing things with people you love, hopefully.

Oh, how I'm happy about this one!
