On September 16, 2026, the Penobscot Nation regained 11,297 acres of ancestral homeland through a partnership with Trust for Public Land. The transfer completes the first phase of the Wáhsehtəkʷ land-return effort, which seeks to return more than 30,000 acres to the Nation.
The land lies near Katahdin, a place of deep cultural significance to the Penobscot people, and along the East Branch of the Penobscot River, known as Wáhsehtəkʷ. The newly returned area includes 15 miles of cold-water streams and 865 acres of ponds and wetlands, with habitat for Atlantic salmon, brook trout, moose and other wildlife.
The Nation has already begun stewardship work, including water-quality monitoring and wildlife surveys. These early efforts will help guide future forest management, ecological monitoring and care for waterways and habitat.
The returned property is currently owned as fee land, with the Nation hoping to eventually place it into federal trust. That distinction matters because trust land can provide tribal nations with greater authority over land use and governance.
The broader project is also connected to Tributary Land Returns, a collaboration involving the four federally recognized Wabanaki Nations in Maine and conservation partners working on land-return projects across the state.
Fundraising continues for the remaining phases. Trust for Public Land and the Penobscot Nation have raised $20.7 million toward a $32.5 million goal. A longer-term goal includes improving southern access to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, which could also affect nearby communities in the Katahdin region.

Cochise Stronghold is widely known as a rugged refuge connected to Chief Cochise and his people. In 1872, Cochise and General Oliver O. Howard negotiated a peace agreement that established a reservation in Chiricahua homelands. By 1876, Chiricahua people were moved to the San Carlos Reservation, and in 1886 Apache bands, including those associated with Geronimo, were made prisoners of war and sent to Florida, Alabama, and later Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The tribe was not released from prisoner-of-war status until 1914.
Today, the Fort Sill Apache Tribe has a land base in Oklahoma and a 30-acre reservation in Akela, New Mexico. Tribal leaders described the Arizona parcel as a meaningful return to a place connected to culture, ceremony, memory, and future generations.
The Dragoon Mountains are also part of the Sky Islands region, where mountain ranges rise above the desert and support remarkable biodiversity. For Chiricahua Apache descendants, the area carries both cultural and environmental significance."

This is not about grand identity statements or manifestation language. It’s closer to a private contract, a decision made in the mind before it’s tested in the world. Say to yourself what you would be, not what you hope happens to you, not what you wish were true, but what you are choosing to become through your own effort. That declaration doesn’t need an audience. It needs to be clear enough that your actions have something to measure themselves against.
Only after that does the second half make sense. Then do what you have to do stops being vague effort and becomes something closer to obedience to a decision you’ve already made. In central Mexico, monarchs have long held cultural meaning for Indigenous peoples of the region. Purépecha traditions connect their arrival with departed ancestors. Mazahua and Otomí traditions associate monarchs with agricultural cycles and call the butterfly “the harvester.”
Their migration is also tied to stewardship across the route. Farther north, Native-led pollinator initiatives involving multiple Tribal Nations have worked to restore habitat for monarchs and other pollinators. These efforts support milkweed, nectar plants, and healthy landscapes that monarchs rely on during migration and reproduction.
The monarch’s journey is often described as one of the most remarkable migrations in the natural world. It also reminds us that conservation is connected across borders, communities, and generations of knowledge.

Sweet Briar College has announced plans to sell the remaining 400 acres of Bear Mountain in Amherst County, Virginia, to the federally recognized Monacan Indian Nation. The Nation considers Bear Mountain sacred and central to its ancestral homeland. The transaction is being facilitated with The Conservation Fund and is expected to close in spring 2027.
Bear Mountain’s significance reaches back generations. In 1833, Monacan ancestor William Johns purchased 400 acres on the mountain, where a Monacan community later developed. At the base of the mountain stands the historic Bear Mountain Indian Mission School, an important surviving center of Monacan community history.
The Monacan Indian Nation already owns a portion of Bear Mountain, land recovered in the 1990s after decades of work to protect places tied to Monacan history and identity. Chief Diane Shields described the effort to acquire the last portion as “securing our history,” noting that the property was once held by Monacan people.
Sweet Briar College President Mary Pope Hutson said she believes the Monacan Nation should have ownership of the Bear Mountain tract, recognizing the Nation as the first peoples of the land where the college now stands. The college has also adopted a land acknowledgement and established a scholarship fund for Monacan women.
The Monacan people are among the oldest Indigenous communities still living in their ancestral homeland in Virginia, with historic ties across the Piedmont and Blue Ridge region.

The land lies in traditional Kanien’kehá:ka, or Mohawk, territory, within the homelands of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
The Nature Conservancy has described the acquisition as one of the largest private land returns in New York’s history. It also builds on a 2022 transfer of 330 nearby acres secured through a partnership with the Adirondack Land Trust, bringing the Cultural Center’s stewardship in Onchiota to about 900 acres.
The land will support an expanded cultural center, Haudenosaunee gatherings, land-based education, and youth programming. It will also provide a permanent home for the Native Earth Program, which brings Indigenous high school students together to build community, reconnect with the Earth, and develop environmental leadership skills.
For director David Fadden, the acquisition continues work begun by Ray and Christine Fadden, who founded the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center in 1954 to educate Native and non-Native communities about Haudenosaunee history, culture, and contemporary realities.
Plans include ecological surveys to identify sensitive areas, food and medicinal plants, wildlife habitat, and future trail routes. Conservation easements are also expected, with partners working to include Haudenosaunee perspectives and Mohawk language in the agreements.

On August 8, 2026, Tribal citizens gathered at the returned Iowa land for an official Land Back Celebration.

"What blocks you isn’t separate from the path. It’s the raw material the path is currently made of.
Most people treat obstacles as interruptions to the real work, delays standing between them and whatever they’re actually trying to do. That framing keeps the obstacle and the goal in permanent opposition, one thing fighting the other for the same space. Marcus Aurelius is proposing something stranger and more useful. The obstacle isn’t blocking the action. It’s supplying the action’s next form. What stands in the way doesn’t get removed so the way can continue. It becomes the way.
This only makes sense once you notice how much progress actually happens through friction rather than despite it. A muscle doesn’t grow around resistance. It grows because of it, using the exact force trying to stop it as the mechanism of its own development. A river doesn’t detour around every boulder out of defeat. Contact with the boulder is what carves the particular path the water eventually takes. The obstruction and the eventual shape aren’t opponents. One produces the other.
This reframes frustration itself. The instinct when blocked is to see the block as proof that things have gone wrong, that the plan has failed. Stoic practice asks for a harder, more useful read: the obstacle is data about what actually needs to happen next, often more accurate data than the original plan provided. What stood in the way becomes, quite literally, the next correct move.
Nothing is actually blocking you. Everything blocking you is only material you haven’t used yet."

What she was doing was hunting black widows. The mud dauber is the long, thin wasp building clay pipes under your porch roof, and she is nobody's problem. She has no hive to guard, no swarm to call, and no interest in your lemonade. The males cannot sting at all. The females almost never do, and you nearly have to press one against your skin to manage it. You can stand a foot away and watch her work all afternoon.

The work is the part worth watching. She packs each mud pipe with spiders, paralyzed and stacked like cordwood, one egg laid on the pile. Black widows are a documented favorite. The spider you will not reach into the woodpile for, she carries home before lunch.

So those clay pipes on the shed wall are not damage. They are a nursery, and a running record of every spider that never made it into your house.
