Was feeling "chipper" this morning, so the summer's accumulation of prunings got processed into mulch. Now we can start the fall/winter apple tree pruning for real. A few weeks ago, I posted about running the corn stalks thru the shredder & showed some pictures. It was noted that the shredder looked like a good, hard-to-clog design. I said at the time that it was due to me removing the output screen. Here are some photos of me putting the screen back in for apple pruning chipping. BTW it's most certainly NOT recommended that this unit be run without a screen in place. It's just me improvising what works around here...
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland

BeetBear took time out from his apple gathering to remind me that Early Voting for our district started today and so we went out and cast our ballot. Was pleased to see a large turnout already on the first hour of the first day. Get out there and make yourselves heard, people! Now back to regular gardening. A brief look at what's happening. The "Pot-O-Carrots" doing well. We've had about 20% of what's growing, so far. Pot will be moved in to greenhouse soon. Garden put to bed before it freezes and if you look carefully you will see four lines of mulch across the slope to prevent washouts in the spring thaw. Bottom of garden is compost/raspberries/milkweed/rhubarb and will be left as-is for winter. Almost time to start the apple tree pruning.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
#Autumn

I don't know where the summer went, but here we are just one day away from the Equinox again and the corn is coming down, completing the cycle. Cool and breezy today, so work progresses well. It all goes on a make-shift rack to keep off the ground. When it's all dug up, it goes through the shredder and gets composted.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
#GYO
#GrowYourOwn
#Harvest
#Eqinox

Finally finished harvesting the butternut squash and cleaned up the area it was growing in. The final count ended up being 322 squashes. We saved quite a few for ourselves and gave away the rest. Also set out what is probably the last of the okra, eggplant and peppers. Now on to pulling up and shredding the corn stalks.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
#GYO
#GrowYourOwn
#Butternut
#Harvest

With all this squash harvesting going on, it was time to start sharing with the neighbors. We're setting aside quite a few for ourselves and passing on the surplus. Between yesterday and today we shared out about 180. We'll get a grand total of the overall harvest as soon as I'm done picking, but it looks like we may top 300 this year. I can't remember where I got this information, but I heard that it's best to leave as much of the stem as possible when harvesting winter squashes. Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage. BTW, this is a mini variety of butternut called :Butter Baby. I've been slowly going down the garden from the up-hill end, removing all the weeds, etc. & expired veg. plants. I'm now at the section where the butternut squash is growing, so it's half weeding & half harvesting. These days I have to set realistic goals for myself so I can feel something has been accomplished. I dragged a rope across the squash bed to mark out a "lane" to be cleared and then set about harvesting. The butternut squash may be a winner this year, but the Sunburst squash was very disappointing. It never grew with any vigor & we only got perhaps two dozen fruit from 4 hills (20 plants). I used to harvest several hundred pounds of this variety over the course of a season, every year up until last year, and now next to nothing. I am going to research a different source of seed for next year. This year I noticed an increase in the population of the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) in & around my property. They haven't really had an effect on anything as far as I can tell, but it's worrying all the same. Today, as I was doing garden cleanup, I noticed many spots where there were detached lanternfly wings under the Aubergine (Eggplant) plants. I think that the sparrows have decided that the adult lanternflys are a meal. Sry for blurry pix.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland

One of the happy successes this year was the mini cabbage. We got 2 different varieties at the suggestion of our daughter. We planted "Tiara" and "Caraflex" both from Johnnies. One is pointy and one is round, can't remember which is which. The small heads are great on the mandolin slicing for coleslaw. And now that the carrots are ready, we can make lots! The second planting really loved the cool, wet August.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
#GYO
#GrowYourOwn
#Carrots
#Cabbage
#Coleslaw

My veg. patch is in a mess. Aug. was the wettest I've seen. We had 7.3 inches (186mm) of rain. It rained every week and it was cool and damp. Thus the rampant growth of "weeds" that I was not able to keep up with. My inner botanist -- "sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have joints right down to the ground" -- wants to go key it all out, but my gardener brain says to get out there & start chopping and get it in to the compost ASAP. I noticed about a month ago, that a volunteer tomato plant was putting up some stems from the brick floor of the greenhouse. Since there will be nothing else going on in there for a few months, I am letting it grow & have started training the stems up some twine attached to the roof. It's about a meter tall at this point & is starting to blossom. Since all the windows & doors are wide open, pollinators should be able to visit. We didn't post yesterday, but cornfest has continued. With yesterday and today our count for the season has reached 283 ears of yumminess brought to the table. The season now has ended. It was exactly this same date last year that we ended with 280, so we topped that by 3 ears this year. Now the wait begins for us to start the process all over next spring.
😀 🌽
#BeetBear
#SweetCorn
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland

Not much to report today, except it was a fine out-doorsey kind of a day. Too nice for late August if you know what I mean. Things are green and lush and they are usually crispy brown this time of year. Nice mild temps and a cool breeze, too. NOT NORMAL for here and now. ANYWAY, we just had our 25th cornfest meal this evening. Today marks one month of sweetcorn feasting this season for us. Not much left to pick, but well see... 😀 🌽
#BeetBear
#SweetCorn
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland

We're down to having just cabbage, okra, tomatoes and corn to harvest now. We're saving the pot-o-carrots for later when everything else is done, but the butternut squash harvest will start soon and it looks like there are hundreds of them, more on that as it happens. How wet was August this year? Well I just got my water bill and we used 4x less water this August compared to last August, measured in CCF (hundred cubic feet). This Aug: 1 CCF, last Aug. 4 CCF. Sole difference being water for the vegetables. Kind of damp and dreary day around here today, not at all like a typical mid-August day. More like autumn. Things are winding down in the veg. patch and looking mighty shabby all around, but still producing nonetheless. Here's today's surplus for the neighborhood. Simmered down the sauce until it was about reduced by half and then into pint jars. Today's the day. Got together everything needed to make a batch of the old family "Chili Sauce" (see earlier posts). I rarely have the patience or energy to undertake this kind of thing anymore, but all the omens and portents were aligned just right this morning. The aroma of this simmering takes me back over sixty years in this very kitchen, when my father would conscript me into helping make this. Now to simmer for a few hours.
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
#GYO
#GrowYourOwn

No where near the productivity they should have had. I used to get wheelbarrow loads and now, just a few dozen. I think this particular seed variety is a dud. Will have to investigate more prolific varieties of the yellow patti-pan.

Another half hour in the afternoon to get the corn and whatever is for dinner. Try to do things early and late because of heat and humidity mid-day. Have stopped trying to weed and will just chop it all down in the autumn. It ain't pretty but it IS productive.

It's getting hard to keep up with the tomatoes right now, so we had another tote-full to share. Also what's probably the last of the yellow squash & zucchini. The onions are curing nicely, too. We're pretty well in to the 2nd corn planting now & the ears are more mature than I'd prefer, but still plenty tasty. My 20-yr-old self would have been able to have finished off the whole 2nd planting by now, but that was a loooong time ago.😀 🌽
#BeetBear
#SweetCorn
#Gardening
#Allotment
#NewEngland
