Voters approved a Democratic-backed constitutional amendment by one percent to sideline the state's redistricting commission and let lawmakers directly implement a new map. The Virginia delegation to the U.S. House is currently six Democrats and four Republicans and could go to 10-to-1 under the new map. With the move by Virginia, Democrats have gained an edge in 10 seats across the country: Five in California, four in Virginia and one court-ordered change in Utah. Florida lawmakers might be up next. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has called on them to meet next week and consider redistricting that could favor Republicans picking up more seats. Right now, Republicans have control of the U.S. House with just a few seats more than Democrats. The Southern Poverty Law Center was indicted yesterday on federal fraud charges alleging it improperly raised millions of dollars to secretly pay leaders of the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups for inside information, Acting AG Todd Blanche said. The DoJ alleges the civil rights group defrauded donors by using their money to fund the very extremism it claimed to be fighting, with more than $3 million paid to informants through a now-defunct program to infiltrate white supremacist and other extremist groups. Prosecutors allege some of the money was used by extremists to carry out other crimes, but court papers did not include specific examples. “The SPLC was not dismantling these groups. It was instead manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred,” Blanche said. Over the weekend, Trump signed off on an executive order with the usual suspects standing around and behind him, ready to applaud and sing paeans to Trump on cue. But this one took a pathetic twist. After scribbling something that looks more like a seismograph reading of when his popularity hits rock bottom than an actual signature, Trump exclaimed: Oh, that's a good one. Look at that, Joe. Do you think Biden can do that? He then showed it off like a toddler showing off a scribbling that was supposed to be a dinosaur eating the moon or something, and waiting for his mommy to hang it on the fridge next to the pictures of couches Vance ripped out of a furniture magazine. However, that's just the biggest red flag on how unwell Trump is, but it is not the only one. As people age, their fine motor skills diminish. It's harder for the elderly to button buttons, turn on lamp switches, or even hold eating utensils. Trump's preference for a Sharpie over a regular ballpoint is probably because the thicker marker is easier for him to handle. By the way, Biden never needed a Sharpie to sign anything. And the fact that Trump found this particular signature a "good one" would indicate he's had problems for a while.read more

On Monday afternoon, the Trump administration announced that Lori Chavez-DeRemer is stepping down from her position as Labor Secretary: White House communications director Steven Cheung said Monday that Chavez-DeRemer is leaving “to take a position in the private sector.” “She has done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices, and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives,” he said in a statement posted to social media. Chavez-DeRemer has been under scrutiny since January, when DOL Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito opened an investigation into allegations that she was involved in an extramarital affair with a member of her security detail, that she drank on the job, and that top aides concocted official events to facilitate her personal travel plans. Trans Secretary Sean Duffy almost did it again. On Saturday, in Nashville, two Southwest planes barely avoided a midair collision after an air traffic controller directed one plane directly in the path of the other. One plane was coming in for a landing, and the other was taking off on a parallel runway. Gusty winds made the landing pilot decide to abort the landing and turn around for another pass. Air traffic control directed the landing pilot right into the path of the plane lifting off. By the time the controller realized the mistake and told the second pilot to stay low, it was too late. A midair collision was only avoided by the pilots being alerted by collision avoidance systems installed in each plane. According to location data, the two planes came within 500 feet of each other, with one passing over the other. It's obviously too early to know all the answers, but Nashville has had staffing issues in the past, since Duffy laid off all those workers for not being white enough or male enough. Duffy has also admitted that the FAA was having problems attracting and retaining people (I can't imagine why). If the investigation points fingers back at Duffy, well, Trump has been in a firing mood lately. read more

More than 100 former NASA astronauts are launching a nonpartisan nonprofit that will advocate for constitutional limits and bringing back civic responsibility. Astronauts For America, which includes a mix of Republicans, Democrats and independents, plans to score political candidates and meet with federal policymakers to share concerns about the state of U.S. democracy. The group is independent of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and membership is limited to retired astronauts. A man in Shreveport, Louisiana killed eight children Sunday in a shooting that authorities described as a domestic violence incident. Godzilla Minus One was a very good movie and a huge hit for Toho worldwide so here comes the sequel. The new trailer for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ just dropped and it looks like Godzilla is coming to New York City. The AVClub writes, "Minus Zero picks up two years after the last movie, and follows the survivors of the last movie’s attacks, per Variety. However, little is known about the plot outside of Godzilla’s trip to the Five Boroughs. Trump seems to have a real credibility problem with support for the war. A new poll from CBS News/YouGov, conducted between April 8 and April 10, revealed some damning findings about domestic sentiments over Trump’s war on, showing that more Americans are starting to become fed up with the administration’s antics. Most Americans feel uncomfortable with the war, with 68 percent worried, 57 percent stressed, and 54 percent angry about the conflict. The poll also found that only 32 percent feel either safe or confident about the conflict. Twenty-nine percent still feel proud about the United States’s role in it. Americans polled said that the top priorities for the war are to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and its oil access, make sure Iran’s people are safe and free, stop the nation’s nuclear programs, and stop it from threatening other countries. However, most of those same Americans feel that none of those objectives have been achieved. In what appears to be a stunning landslide, Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party has lost to Péter Magyar’s Tisza party. By a lot. In his brief concession speech, Orbán said the loss was "painful for us, but clear." Center-right Tisza party is expected to win a supermajority, which bodes well for the EU and Ukraine and not so much for Vladimir Putin, who is a close ally to Orbán. On Thursday, Milwaukee Election Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutierrez announced that hundreds of voters were silenced when their absentee ballots were delivered the day after Tuesday's election. Per Wisconsin state law, ballots have to be delivered by the time the polls close on Election Day. Per Gutierrez, the election commission received only 20 absentee ballots from the United States Postal Service on Tuesday, which was Election Day in Wisconsin. This was despite having been in contact with USPS several times during the day. However, on Wednesday, USPS delivered 269 ballots to the election commission, through no fault of the voters who did everything they were supposed to do. Gutiérrez said of the 269 ballots she received the morning after Election Day, 17 had no postal date and 252 had postmarks on or before April 6. "We've never experienced this before where we got no ballots and then all of a sudden the first delivery in the morning is that many," she said. "This is a smaller election too, so that number may be normal in like a presidential ... It's just completely unprecedented for us." Similar problems were reported in Dane County, where they received 107 late ballots, even though some of them were postmarked as early as late March. A Supreme Court ruling could lead to the dismissal of a conviction against MAGA influencer Steve Bannon. On Monday, the conservative court threw out an appellate ruling that upheld Bannon's conviction for defying a subpoena to speak before Congress during an investigation of the riot that occurred on Jan. 6, 2021.
