Washington state is one of five states — along with Arizona, Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska — with anti-transgender initiatives on the November ballot. There are two measures on the ballot in Washington that would be consequential for 2SLGBTQIA+ students.

Washington https://ballotpedia.org/Washington_Initiative_638,_Sex_Verification_Requirements_for_Female_School_Sports_Initiative_(2026) aims to ban trans girls from girls’ sports, and Washington https://ballotpedia.org/Washington_Initiative_1,_Parental_Right_to_Review_Education_Materials,_Receive_Notifications,_and_Opt_Out_of_Sexual-Health_Education_Initiative_(2026) would threaten the privacy and safety of 2SLGBTQIA+ students by opening up access to all school records to parents, including medical and mental health records. Opponents of the measure say it could force school staff to out students who may not be accepted at home.

The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, a nonprofit organization representing 57 tribal governments, passed a resolution at its annual September convention opposing both ballot measures.

“Therefore, be it resolved, that ATNI strongly opposes Washington Initiatives I-001 and I-638 and finds that these measures are inconsistent with the Tribes’ commitment to protecting children, strengthening families, and ensuring the well-being of all young people,” the text of the resolution reads.

This is a clear assertion of tribal sovereignty, said Shelby Chestnut, a citizen of the Assiniboine Nation on the Fort Peck Reservation and executive director of the https://transgenderlawcenter.org/.

“It is saying not only are we not standing for hate in our state and in our region, but we’re saying our Two-Spirit and trans community members are valued assets of our community,” Chestnut said.

More anti-trans bills are likely to come in following years, Chestnut told Underscore Native News and ICT, based on the trajectory of this presidential administration. Other opponents of the anti-trans initiatives are also worried that Washington is being used as a blueprint for other states across the country.

For Chestnut, they believe it is important that conversations about trans rights are incorporated into broader conversations about bodily autonomy.

“This is really an attack on all people’s bodily autonomy because it’s not going to stop with them coming for trans kids or trans kids in sports or trans kids access to healthcare,” they said. “It’s going to be as far-reaching as we can imagine, and you will see if we don’t defeat these ballot measures in a variety of states across the country, we will expect them to be more, and we will expect them to be more severe.”

Underscore Native News and ICT spoke with both proponents and opponents of the ballot measures.

A move to ban trans athletes

If passed, https://ballotpedia.org/Washington_Initiative_638,_Sex_Verification_Requirements_for_Female_School_Sports_Initiative_(2026)#Text_of_measure would require verification of “biological sex” for students to participate in girls’ sports. Today, a physical is already required to participate in sports in Washington, but if passed, this initiative would have students be required to obtain a statement signed by a health care provider “that verifies the student’s biological sex, relying only on one or more of the following: The student’s reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels.”

Hallie Herzberg said the initiatives are a “measure to keep boys out of girls’ sports.” Herzberg is director of communications for https://letsgowashington.com/, the political action committee that helped introduce the two initiatives. The committee was founded by conservative hedge fund founder Brian Heywood.

Underscore Native News and ICT asked Herzberg to clarify if she was talking about trans girls participating in girls sports.

“I don’t know how they identify. Biological males, maybe they would consider themselves to be trans girls. Maybe they aren’t. I’m not sure how they identify, but yeah, that’s what the initiative specifically concerns: biological males and biological females,” Herzberg said.

But many practitioners of modern medicine disagree with using the term “biological sex” when defining a person’s sex. “It is not uncommon for individuals to have atypical combinations of chromosomes, hormones, or anatomy that challenge the binary model of sex assignment,” according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s https://www.asrm.org/advocacy-and-policy/fact-sheets-and-one-pagers/just-the-facts-biological-sex/ “Such natural variation, which is neither a disease nor a disorder requiring medical intervention, illustrates the complexity of biological sex.”

Underscore Native News and ICT also asked Herzberg what the initiative might mean for intersex students. Intersex is an umbrella term for natural variances in sex traits or reproductive anatomy.

“That’s a really small population of students, but that’s not to say they should be overlooked,” Herzberg said. “I think it all depends specifically on your interaction with your doctor, and they’ll be able to identify which league you should participate in, and that’s the basis of the initiative.”

As many as 2.8 million people over 13-years-old in the United States identify as transgender, according to the https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/trans-adults-united-states/, a research center at the University of California, Los Angeles focused on public policy and law related to sexual orientation and gender identity. More than 5 million people identify as intersex nationwide, according to the https://interactadvocates.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/intersex-health-equity-report.pdf.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association previously shared an estimate that between 5 to 10 student athletes identify as transgender in Washington, according to reporting by https://www.kuow.org/elections/2026-09-29/10-washingtonians-weigh-in-on-initiative-to-ban-trans-girls-from-girls-sports.

When asked to confirm this by Underscore Native News + ICT, Sean Bessette, director of communications for the association, said:

“The WIAA does not maintain a definitive count of participating transgender student-athletes, as transgender students are not identified by state law, therefore no defined quantities exist.”

A group called https://nohateinwastate.org/ is leading the opposition to the two initiatives. The campaign says Initiative 638 would not only impact trans girls, but all girls in sports, and potentially lead to less participation in girls’ sports overall.

Emilio Garza, organizing and coalition manager for No Hate In Washington State, said the initiative could “disenfranchise up to 150,000 young people from participating in girls sports across the state.” Many of these students, Garza explained, do not have a primary care physician and so get sports physicals from free school-based or community clinics.

“These types of public and free clinics are not equipped to provide the types of invasive genital exams, nor the types of testing that this initiative would require,” Garza said.

But proponents of the ballot measure with Let’s Go Washington argue that invasive genital exams would not be required, and leave it up to the students’ doctor to determine biological sex.

In the text of the ballot measure, it states that a medical practitioner would be required to confirm biological sex through “the student’s reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels.”

Parental Rights Bill

Initiative 001, titled https://ballotpedia.org/Washington_Initiative_1,_Parental_Right_to_Review_Education_Materials,_Receive_Notifications,_and_Opt_Out_of_Sexual-Health_Education_Initiative_(2026)#Text_of_measure, would allow Washingtonian parents to access all school records of their children (including medical and mental health records), opt out of sexual-health education and review their child’s curriculum, textbooks and supplemental materials.

“In 001, I struggle to see the connection between harm for students and additional information to parents,” Herzberg said. According to her, statutory protections for children who are in abusive situations that currently exist within Washington state schools will continue to exist.

“If the most important thing is student outcomes and student safety and student well being, we fully believe that a parent who is the child’s primary stakeholder and caregiver deserves to have at least access to that information and should at least know what’s going on with their student in the school,” she said.

But opponents of the initiative say this would introduce multiple concerns for student safety, especially putting 2SLGBTQIA+ students at risk of homelessness.

“Many kids in Washington live in homes that are not safe. That includes queer and trans youth living in unsafe conditions who face being kicked out of their homes, or being beaten, or worse, if they are outed by their schools via the disclosure required under 001,” said Nick Allen, policy and advocacy director at Inatai Foundation who endorsed the No Hate In Washington State campaign.

Opponents also say there are concerns that students might withhold information about abuse from teachers and other trusted adults if Washington state voters pass the ballot measure, as well as that educators might have to give sensitive records of students to parents or guardians who may be abusing children.

If the initiative passes, student records could only be withheld from their parent if they are actively being investigated by law enforcement or the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families for a case of child abuse or neglect unless the parent has obtained a court order.

Ballots in Washington state will be mailed out Oct. 16 and election day takes place Nov. 3.

Iranian officials have raised the possibility of launching ground incursions into neighboring countries if the United States resumes military strikes against the Islamic Republic, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with warnings conveyed by Tehran. The event focuses on Huliaipole, a town in the Zaporizhzhia region of south-eastern Ukraine and the birthplace of Nestor Makhno (1888–1934). An anarchist revolutionary and leader of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the revolutionary and civil wars of 1917–1921, Makhno became one of the most influential and controversial figures of the period. His movement was deeply rooted in the peasant communities of southern Ukraine, and Huliaipole became one of its most important centres.
Makhno’s legacy has been interpreted very differently over time. While Soviet historiography largely portrayed him as a bandit and counter-revolutionary, anarchist movements in Europe came to regard him as an important figure in the history of revolutionary anarchism. More recent approaches have placed greater emphasis on the Ukrainian social and historical context of the Makhnovist movement and its relationship to the peasantry, local self-government and competing forms of political power.

“If you’re a man and you turn 18 years old, they almost immediately draft you,” said Chos, 19, who enrolled at a Moscow university to avoid conscription and later escaped Russia with the help of a Ukrainian non-profit.
But he says the brainwashing and militarization started much earlier. Chos says they began having special cadet classes in 2020, when he was a sixth-grade student. They were trained in a range of military techniques — loading and reloading weapons, marching, tactical medicine — a co-ordinated effort, Chos says, to create future soldiers to fight his fellow Ukrainians.
“What Russia is doing is occupying territories, kidnapping children and turning them [into] Russian soldiers,” he said.

Daria Fursova, 23, remembers how quickly her elementary school curriculum changed after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 when she was 11.
“The administration said that there will no longer be Ukrainian books in school, in classes,” she said, recalling the start of fifth grade.
Not long after, Fursova’s school stopped teaching Ukrainian and instead began instructing them in Russian history and the Russian language.
Speaking Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar — a language considered “highly endangered” by UNESCO — was forbidden, even during breaks, according to 18-year-old Daria Tomashova, who says the indoctrination was “everywhere,” from textbooks in school to what was broadcast on TV.

Beyond the Russification of occupied Crimea, the international community has raised particular concern with how Russia has forcibly separated tens of thousands of Ukrainian children from their families and taken them into Russian territory — an act Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as “mass kidnapping” amounting to genocide.
Many of those children have shared stories of abuse while in Russian custody, including being placed in isolation cells for not being co-operative in Russian re-education camps. Other children are given new identities, naturalized as Russian citizens and forcibly adopted into foster families in Russia.

The ads continued airing Monday. As of 2:45 pm plaintiffs said an ad titled “Maduro” had aired another 20 times, one titled “Final Battle” 11 times, and another titled “The Country He Loves” once.

Rather than seeking contempt sanctions at this time, the plaintiffs are asking Rochon for a status conference to determine whether the Trump administration has complied with her order.

NOTE: there’s just no way around the fact that this is now considered reckless animal abuse, and thankfully has been eradicated around much of the modern world (but not all, sadly). Stark lived in a different time, though… is something that I hope can be considered in this case.

Mabel was thus considered America’s first famous female tiger trainer. Amazingly, she practiced until the age of 79yo, when she was unceremoniously fired when her employer’s insurer dropped her coverage. She died by suicide three months later, unable to bear life away from her big cats.

Barone announced Haunted Chocolatier back in 2021, but amid ongoing work on his phenomenally successful Stardew Valley, progress on the follow-up has been slow going. Indeed, in June, Barone admitted to feeling somewhat embarrassed to have to keep on saying he was still working away on the game. “Feels kinda dumb posting this same thing over and over, but that’s the reality,” he said at the time.

In a new interview with GQ (thanks, Eurogamer), Barone touched on what to expect from Haunted Chocolatier when it eventually comes out, and it sounds more different from Stardew Valley than I had expected. It’s set in a more “metaphysical” locale, for a start, and in terms of gameplay it’s more of an action RPG.

“It is still what I call a town game,” Barone said, “But it’s more of an action RPG — the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights. It’s for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That’s what I do, honestly.”

Republican California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton is targeting Spanish-speaking voters with an AI-generated ad that shows a caricature of a trans girl playing soccer against high school girls. The ad even features an AI-generated version of his Democratic opponent, Xavier Becerra, taking a policy position that he does not take in real life.

The ad is raising questions about how AI is used both to create problems that don’t exist – the ad used generative AI to portray the trans girl as a much older man pushing cis girls around in a high school soccer game, which doesn’t happen in real life – and to put words in political opponents’ mouths.

This boy has been my best bud for 11 years. I can’t imagine a day without him. We got him from a rescue and were told that he used to live in a barn. Although with how afraid of new people and outside noises it’s hard to believe.

I’ve worked from home for years now and he posts up on my desk like this most of the day. I love him with all my heart 😭

This will be one of the last times the old GT8-100C/2S TramTrains are used. They can be driven from both ends, and such are used for shuttle services like this, where normal turning loops are not available. Starting next year, the remaining C/2S services will instead be served by the new class 492 TramTrains.

I have literally never seen this in Europe. In Germany, we’d probably consider this “weird” in case our politicians did that. Feels a bit like clicking the thumbs-up button of my own social media post…
