I am pleased to find out California passed a new law for classic cars that exempts them from smog tests. My 1982 toyota pickup that I haven't registered or driven in a few years because it's too hard to get it to pass a smog test will be exempt from testing in two years.

Most of the problem with it is the 44-year-old emissions equipment on it doesn't work well anymore, and it's very difficult to fix that stuff and find replacement parts for it.

In two years, I will be able to take all that stuff off it it, put a nice carburetor on it, and drive it around again.

I once heard a story from a drunk guy who told me a good friend of his was a prison guard and put an inmate with bad acne in a headlock once, and the pressure caused a bunch of his pimples to pop all at once. The prison guard supposedly started gagging and let the inmate go.

Sometimes I look at the many guppies in my aquarium, which must be on their hundredth generation by now, and wish I could move them to my little pond outside so I could get rid of the aquarium.

We have warm winters here in LA, but not warm enough for guppies. They need the water to be in the 70s at the coldest.

I look at them in their teeming, fecund masses, and think, what if i tried breeding them for cold? There are so many of them, and they make babies so quickly. What if I lowered the water temperature in the aquarium little by little over a long period of time? How long would it take before babies with adaptations for colder water to be born and breed new generations that would be even better suited for colder water?

I recognize that these are the thoughts of a mad scientist, so I never follow through.

Argentine ants are the newest addition to the fauna of my yard. It seems wild they weren't here until now, considering how widely spread and invasive they are.

Anyhow, they are persistent home invaders, even more so during hot weather, and this week they found the cats' food bowls.

I let my cats free-feed on kibble, so there's always something in that bowl. The ants love the kibble.

Despite my efforts to wash away their pheromone trails with mopping, they keep finding their way back to the bowls every night while I'm asleep. I've been putting diatomaceous earth around the baseboards, but they just find a new place to sneak out.

One of my goals with last year's garden was to create some deliberate crosses between squash plants to go along with the accidental crosses I'm always getting because bees are busy.

I already had a hybrid of pumpkin and butternut that was very good, so i tried crossing it with kabocha squash.

You never know if you've succeeded until the fruit grows, you harvest the seeds, you plant the seeds, and then the seeds grow into a new plant.

It looks like i did it though. This is a cool squash and it looks like it has both butternut and kabocha traits

I work in PR for a university, and for most of my time here, it's been about promoting cool and interesting research taking place on campus.

But in the last year or so, it seems like almost everyone at all levels of management has caught hype psychosis. Anything that mentions quantum or AI is the most important and critical thing. I've learned something new about the community theater economy.

Increasingly, theaters seem to be using projections, in place of sets. These are basically just stock images that you download from the internet.

A theater that wants to use projections just needs to put up a scrim (a kind of translucent cloth) and project these images onto it.

I had a planning meeting with the director and producer for our next show last night, and they got to talking about the projections they want to use and how expensive they are. The director complained that she was already blowing through part of her budget just because of the projections.

"How expensive could these things be?" I wondered. I asked them for the website they are getting these things from.

They gave it to me and I took a look. These projections are anywhere from $75-150 apiece! And most of them just shitty stock images. A lot of them are things I could find Creative Commons equivalents for. And a lot of them are even AI generated.

I told them to hold off on buying any projections yet and to show me the ones they are interested in. I'm confident I can get or make us usable replacements for free.

I am a set builder, so I don't like projections anyway. I think it's a lazy way to do a show, but now that I know they are such a rip-off, I am really against them.

To make matters worse, the publishers that license the rights to produce shows are starting to push these projections as part of their licensing packages.

What a scam.

P.S. A lot of the projections are AI-generated, which adds insult to injury.

One of her examples of how great AI was focused on automatically turning on lights when it gets dark.

If you just use a timer to turn your lights on at 7 pm, some times of the year, they will come on while the sun is still up, and other times of the year, they won't come on until well after dark, she said. AI can tell when it's actually getting dark and turn your lights on then, she said.

Another one of her examples was refrigerator maintenance. Imagine if a part of your refrigerator needs to be serviced every six weeks, she said. You would have to remember to do that. Or you can have the AI remind you to service it every six weeks she said.

I guess this lady has never heard of light sensors or calendars. It seemed like the host of the program hadn't either, because she was also excited that AI could take care of both of these problems for us.

I remember when hamburger buns came in only one type that was equally bad, but then new offerings came along. The same hasn't happened for hot dogs.

I know what you're going to say: "What about french rolls?" or "My grocery store has hoagie rolls." I've anticipated this, and before you say it, let me tell you that you are wrong.

A french roll or a hoagie roll is not a better hot dog bun. It's a sandwich roll. It's size and density necessitates a lot of fillings to balance it out. A hot dog isn't enough and it's overwhelmed by that much bread.

So, why don't grocery stories carry something more substantial than a wonder bread hot dog bun but less massive than a french roll? bratwursts and the like cry out for a worthy partner!

Pretty soon they had organized a reading group. Someone asked for recommendations for books about women. I suggested Women by Charles Bukowski. The suggestion was not well received. I quit very shortly after.
