The guy that texted about free pussy is disgusting but drunkenness doesn't preclude texting - and by all accounts (including her own) she consented to a lot of what happened that night, guys stopped at least in some of the moments when she said no, and the missing pieces seem lost in a haze of drugs and alcohol.

Afterwards she literally said that nothing illegal happened and that she'd be up for it again but with fewer guys, and then she tried to go the next party and was banned.

There may well have been immoral things that happened that night ("free pussy" 🤢), but throwing someone in a cage for the charge of rape - or doxxing all seven boys before they've even been charged - should require a very high bar.

I found everything about it disturbing, but it sounds like Jane Doe and the accused (or at least some of the accused) were on the same page about what they wanted, and there were no arrests at the time because she was clear in the weeks after that it was consensual. From what I've read, Jane Doe wanted to come back for the next party and the frat president thought it wouldn't be good for her or for the guys.

I do hope that if there was rape that any rapists are convicted, but I also hope that they get a genuinely fair trial and don't think that they should be doxxed at this point.

My first reaction (after the disgust at the texts) was that most of the conversations around it treat Jane Doe as if she had no agency, as if just being female means that she can't make basic decisions for herself. It was some of the most misogynistic stuff I've heard.

Being comfortable in the world does not mean being under the illusion that it is always a safe place.
(If it were my daughter walking naked and drunk into a party I would wonder where I had gone wrong. If she were raped at that party, I would want the rapist(s) to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law - but I would also wonder how I had failed to teach her basic agency and self preservation.)

So you're thinking that when people love profit, then the governing bodies reflect that (and vice versa)? Politics being downstream of culture? That makes sense to me, but I think we kind of have that culture. My guess is that if you looked at the US, you would get a very high consensus on the danger of "profit by any means" among the people. But the psychopaths who are drawn to power in either govt or private sector continue regardless; I don't see them being influenced by the culture in that regard.

Or if they are, it's superficial - I think the politicians who get elected tend to appeal to that culture - they know the rhetoric and how to use it- but always play the same power games.

You and I agree about so much! But to me the problem here is that the state - with its incredible power to coerce the people - is incentivizing certain behavior in the pharma companies. That same behavior in pharma without protection and subsidy and threat from the govt? zero profit

Business + coercion is a dangerous combination.

Business by itself can be good or bad, but it has a natural check on its power. Without coercion, products have to actually be of value to people.

My solution would be to get govt out of bed with pharma (not that I think that's going to happen...).

The other incentives regarding vaccines in the medical system I know that you're well aware of: state actors often getting hired by the pharma companies that they're supposed to be regulating, such that their job in - say - the FDA is kind of an interview for future position in pharma; insurance companies giving bonuses to pediatricians who has x% of children fully vaccinated in their practices... it's a long list, but I think you know it well!

haha! how long do you have? mulberry trees are supposed to be like that but I've had a 5% success rate with the cuttings that I tried. From my experience, figs are unique that way among fruit trees in temperate zones. Willows are crazy easy to propagate, and you can turn one willow tree into several hundred very easily. It's kind of like magic.

Apples (and I think a lot of others - peaches, probably pears and plums) are easy to start from seed. Growing from cuttings means getting an exact copy of the original tree but growing from seed is kind of like having babies, genetically speaking, so you never know quite what you'll get. Some traits of the parents but a unique person/tree/fruit.

That could be a problem if you're really counting on - say - honeycrisp apples- but it's also kind of cool! You'll get totally new varieties of apples and one might turn out to be amazing. We're trying dozens of apple seeds this winter and about a dozen peach pits and it will be an interesting experiment (but we won't know the fruit quality for years; it's a low time preference game).

Yes! Fig trees are crazy easy to propagate. You can take cuttings in the fall/winter and almost all of them will root and basically turn into new trees. It's crazy - like a money printer for food. But generally they don't starting fruiting right away, so that fig (and another from a different tree) was a nice surprise.

So good to hear this from a developer! I've been encouraged to see many mentions of his work on Nostr. (Mostly from atyh (nprofile…uexl) but at least a few others.)
I actually met Illich once - but I was very young and didn't have much to say. I think I just stared up at him in awe because I knew how much my father admired his work.

I've often thought that it would be a worthwhile project to do a presentation of his ideas in a simpler form. His ideas are brilliant - and in some ways very simple - but much of the writing is not easy.
