Most shows start with character archetype that gets thrown into the trash one or two seasons later when the characters actually get fleshed out properly (almost every good show really doesn't get good, or at least doesn't come into its own, until season 3, like TNG and DS9, maybe Voyager, but also House especially, and then some other examples that aren't Star Trek or House would go here).

He's better in the later seasons.

If the nazis had won, either America would've stayed out of the war or had some kind of treaty (there's no way America could be conquered from outside) so it's possible that if the nazis won then America would actually be even more anti-nazi right now and into the future, there might've been even MORE subversion with America being seen as the jewish haven of the entire world. Richard Jewell is another overlooked modern classic, directed by Clint Eastwood and I think it might be his best movie (that he's directed anyway).

It's surprisingly subtle and understated. There's almost no music or soundtrack, it's not flashy, it's not heightened drama, it's extremely naturalistic. You can actually see the contrast when you compare the movie to its trailer, which is a fantastic trailer.

I have no idea how much of the movie is fictionalized (not to be mistaken for condensed, which is when they take real events and put them into scenes where they hadn't yet happened, which I think is fine because that's just to help the pacing, as long as the events are still what really happened). What I can tell is that everything plays so real and straight, ESPECIALLY compared to modern hollyqueird biopics, that it's easy to assume that everything in this movie is exactly how it happened in real life.

I also love how the movie doesn't try to glorify or lionize Richard Jewell. He's a fucking dumb fat loser nerd, a rube, a dupe, he became a cop because he liked to imagine himself being moral, and he did a lot of stupid shit in his life that would come to backfire on him during the investigation. But like most dupes, he was also honest to his greatest fault. He wanted to cooperate entirely because he figured that the truth would always win, and his story proves the opposite. It's also a good reminder of how many people owe me an apology to the degree that it would damage their own livelihoods. That's always worth bringing up too. :nicestare:

This especially goes for the "big speech" at the end. The FBI finally brings Richard in for an actual questioning, as opposed to tricking him into confessing over and over. Afterwards, he finally tells them simply, "I used to think working in federal law enforcement was the highest calling you could have, and I don't think that anymore. All the time you spend investigating me is time you're not looking into who really did it." He was a gullible fat dupe the entire time until this moment, it's the perfect hollywood moment where our "hero" (IN SNEER QUOTES) has his awakening, but instead of a writer inventing the scene and making it possibly better than it was, summing up the movies themes in a powerful stirring speech with rising music, it's just played out simply, and it makes me think that it's what really happened, exactly as it happened.

I think it's one of the best movies of the entire past 10 years, easily.
