There will be no such thing as ‘chat control’ and no general monitoring of online communications. What will be done is that companies will have to detect material that is child sexual abuse material. The technology used will not be able to read the content of your messages. Companies are currently already allowed to do this on a voluntary basis. This has been essential for child protection. Under the proposal, private companies would be required to detect child sexual abuse material. The technology cannot read your messages. It can only identify whether content may contain such material.

While it did apply for membership in 1987, accession negotiations are at a standstill since 2018, in part due to democratic backsliding and a lack of respect for fundamental rights. Comments on social media are useful in furthering the debate amongst people online, and the engagement generates more visibility for the post. We do read our comments and report back to policy makers on a regular basis, but as you said, taking part in the consultation is the best way to ensure your voice is heard.

On the ECI ‘Stop Destroying Videogames’, while we are not able to propose binding legislation at this stage, we'll work together with the video game industry and consumer rights groups to come up with a code of conduct on managing video games' ‘end of life'. Previous EU code of conducts in areas like disinformation and taxation have helped paved the way for later binding EU laws.
