Madeira, the Reserve, and Values

A Nostr article about control, land, and the things nobody wrote...

The myth was: a land so rich in forest it took seven years to burn it all down. A land so fertile, so abundant, that if you came here and worked hard, you'd have something. Come build. Come settle. The island is yours if you take it.

The reality was different.

The work was brutal. Life was harder. The plots you cleared were destroyed by fog and disease. The forest that supposedly took seven years to burn? It was burned for the mills—to fuel the steam that processed sugar. The rich land and the abundant forest were never yours. They were fuel.

Yet people came anyway. They came together. In the hardship, they sang and danced. They built community despite the system designed to keep them isolated, desperate, and owned by someone else's ledger.

This is the story that wasn't written down.

The written story says: the contrato de colonia took half your crop, a tenth went to the Church, you kept 45%. It kept farmers poor for generations. True. Documented. Cold.

But the unwritten story—the one that lived in families, passed down through generations—says something else. It says what it actually felt like. What people actually did. How they survived when everything was designed to break them.

And it says: they came together. They sang. They danced.

I saw the same thing on Indigenous reserves in Canada. Indians, I said to me indians meant indigious." Little did I know it was Little India or Mini China. I remember saying, "Where are the Indians? You know, with bows and arrows, living off the land?" Yeah. So naive.

Confined land. Resources right there and forbidden. Survival worked out of sight. A legal framework that calls it order.

Different centuries. Different laws. Different people writing them down. Same mechanism.

You work land you will never own. What you need is close by and closed to you. Breaking the rule is violence. The rule is called law. People survive out of sight.

But here's what the documents don't show:

In Madeira, fishermen caught fish. Farmers grew potatoes. Half the potatoes were already gone—to the landlord. A tenth to the Church. What was left, they traded. Five fish for pine cones. Value for value. Direct. No one else got a cut from that trade itself.

Five fish meant you could start a fire under wet driftwood. You could cook a meal. You could survive the winter. That trade kept people alive when the system kept everything else. It's not just history. It's how people actually survived.

V4V. Value for value. The middleman already took his cut. But he didn't get to take another one from the trade itself. What you caught for what they had left. Direct.

You could steal. But if you were caught, everyone saw you beaten at the pillory. The shame. So most people just worked more. Traded what they had. Endured.

That's Nostr. That's Bitcoin. That's what these systems are trying to build.

Except people in Madeira were already doing it 70, 80, 90 years ago. Still are. Out of necessity, not technology. No choice. Everything above them already belonged to someone else. So they traded what remained, directly. Your parents' generation lived it. They still know how.

The colonia was abolished in 1977. That's within the lifetime of most adults on Madeira today. The people who lived under it are still here. They raised the current generation. Their grandchildren are in school now.

But here's the thing: nobody ever wrote down how people actually survived it.

The Church and the Crown kept records. Notaries recorded contracts. Courts ruled on disputes. Scholars later read all of it and wrote books about the contrato de colonia.

But the people who lived it—who planted in hidden valleys nobody dared to enter, who watched for patrols, who knew if they were caught they'd be beaten at the pillory where everyone could see—they didn't write books. Half of them couldn't read.

Their history went into what they told their kids. What they told their grandkids. It lives in family memory, and nowhere else.

That's the unwritten story: the view from the ground.

The written story (the contracts, the rulings, the scholar's books) is the view from the top. It shows the system. The unwritten story shows how people got through it.

Neither is real without the other.

Here's what families remember:

They planted on unseen land. To reach it, you had to cross the pica burros—terrain so steep and dangerous that nobody would search for you there. The only way in was through ground people wouldn't risk. If the land was seen being worked, it would be destroyed. If someone was caught building on it, they'd be beaten publicly at the largo do pelourinho, where the whole settlement could watch.

That's not just theft of the crop. That's terror. That's how you keep people from trying.

The pig belonged to the owners. The family raised it on scraps. At slaughter time, the meat was sold. What was left—the fat, the cracklings, the scraps—went into clay pots with wine and garlic, to spread like butter on bread.

Today carne vinha d'alhos is a dish. For most families it was survival.

Money was for emergencies: the doctor, the midwife, transport. Children ran through the night to fetch them. People wrapped one foot on the way to church so they'd have a boot left. They had one good pair of church shoes.

When families could finally build their own houses, they built them big, for the generations to come. They expected their children who'd emigrated to come back. The children had lives elsewhere and grandchildren born there, and the houses stood empty on the slopes.

The pattern.

Madeira under the colonia. Canadian reserves. Anywhere a few own the land, many work it, control is enforced by threat.

You work land you will never own.
What you need is forbidden.
The rule is law.
You survive out of sight. If you're caught, violence.
The official record shows only the rule.
Same system. Different places.

But the survival mechanism is the same too: V4V. You trade what you have for what you need. Direct. No middleman. No one taking a cut because they control the rails.

Here's why this matters now:

The colonia ended in 1977. But the people who lived under it taught their kids to keep something off the books, trade directly, avoid the people who set the rules. That didn't go away.

Madeira withdraws more cash per resident than mainland Portugal. Most places that still use cash at all do it because of what history taught them: hold something nobody counts. Trade V4V when you can.

The pattern is still visible in the landscape. Empty houses on the slopes. Abandoned terraces. Hidden valleys people still remember but don't talk about.

And in the habits: cash use, direct trade, a deep skepticism about who controls the money and the land.

Why Bitcoin and Nostr make sense here

People who lived this—or whose parents did—already know. They know the rules change when someone decides they should. They know working hard doesn't mean you keep what you build. They know control over what you own matters. They know some things stay off the books.

Bitcoin isn't a pitch. Nostr isn't a platform you're supposed to join. They're just the next step in thinking that's already there: keep options open. Don't put everything through the people who set the rules. Hold something that's yours. Trade V4V when you can.

That's not new. That's what people did 70, 80, 90 years ago in Madeira. That's what keeps families alive on the island today. That's what keeps communities alive on the reserves.

The technology just makes it work without asking permission.

The last chance

The people who lived it are in their 80s and 90s now. In ten years most of them are gone. And all that's left is what the Church wrote down.

Ask them now. Ask your grandparents, your aunts, your uncles. Ask anyone old enough to remember.

What did your family give away? Where did you plant that nobody could see? What happened if you were caught? What did you trade, and for what? What money disappeared or stopped being worth anything? How did you survive when you owned nothing?

This isn't just Madeira. Ask in Canada, on the reserves. In Ireland. Scotland. The Azores. Goa. Everywhere the pattern held.

You'll find the similarities. You'll find out your family's story wasn't unique. It is the same system. Different places. Same survival mechanism: V4V. Still happening.

Write it down. Not because it needs a scholar's approval. Because it happened. And it's almost gone.

The hidden truth

The written history of Madeira and Canada—of most places—is the view from the top. It's real, and it matters. But it's incomplete.

The unwritten history is the view from the ground. It's in the memory of people who lived it, and it's vanishing.

If we don't record it now, all that's left is the landlord's version.

And the landlord's version was never the whole story.

This is the piece behind the FREE Madeira school workshops, which ask students to collect what their families remember. It's published on Nostr to reach people thinking about sovereignty, control, and why history matters. If you're on Madeira and your grandparents lived under the colonia—or if you're anywhere the same pattern held—the story you carry is evidence. Don't wait for someone to publish it first.
