you may not want to read this post while eating. once, a cat that broke into my house got pregnant and had kittens. suddenly, i had a box of kittens. i'm not really the number one candidate for "person who would have a box of kittens". but now, i had one. each of them could fit in your hand, and people found them extremely cute. they only got cuter as they approached the size of a potato, a mango: people would come to my house to see them. i took on the task of watching over them. i'd be working, while on the floor next to me women, little girls, children, all filtered in and out to gawk and become emotionally warmed by this box - potentially, one of the cutest boxes and small arrangements of the physical universe possible: just a pile of kittens. eventually, i moved them into another space slightly separate from my house. here, they got fleas. this posed no threat to my normal home or family, but it got pretty bad. i suspect the fleas were in a bush, came in a window, and then had a population explosion once i moved these kittens there. the kittens were too young to treat chemically. they looked fine physically, but they were just totally covered in fleas if you really got in there to check. now, one of my "issues" with owning animals is that i'm unable to not do everything possible for them. i somehow feel that it's unethical for me, their steward, to leave anything undone where they have to bear the brunt of it and "just deal". this means that for several weeks, all this was solely my urgent responsibility and domain. i'd go out to the kitten space, put them all in a crate, vacuum their space, then wash them to get the fleas off. this didn't solve the problem entirely, but it decreased the number of fleas they had to deal with by a factor of 100x, at least. the most noteworthy feature of this was the bathing. once you start washing, the fleas know where to run on the animal. apparently it’s instinctual - then a small amount of soap just instantly kills them. i'd be just massacring fleas out here. just killing hundreds and hundreds of fleas a day. if there was footage of this, flea teachers would use it in elementary schools to trauma shock their students. just stacking up walls of flea corpses. a really noteworthy amount of death was taking place here. somehow, the fleas know that the face is the safest place to go. so, each time, with each kitten, i'd have this somewhat nightmarish visual where i'd look at their face, during the bath, and it would look fine and normal, but then i'd apply water to it, and a sea of fleas would emerge from the fur - almost like the fur was alive. black, crawling, and i'd carefully apply the slightly soapy liquid, avoiding their eyes and noses, and strip this living quasi-invisible sheet of death out from under the fur on their tiny faces. i did this so many times, man. they weren't visibly suffering, they had no cuts, marks, anything like that. they were fine, really. but i was the line. i was the boundary between the decay and true chaos of nature, and these half domestic beings - the embodiment of what is cute, what cute is: the kittens. since this time, my perception of "the cute" and what cute is has changed entirely. you see cute things, you associate it with little girls. that is not what cute is. "the cute" is able to exist because something - something unseen - is keeping it aloft, out from the forest floor of life - where the law is violence - up from the decay, the death, the chaos, away from normal life. now, when i see something cute, i see these invisible strings. what is allowing it to be cute? what is allowing this odd thing to be what it is? to be free? to float, to charm, to be soft, round, defenseless - how? what invisible wall is insulating this thing, allowing this strange flower to flourish? for a moment, that was me. i was that. my hands covered in tiny blood filled corpses. washing the death from my hands and clothes, so others could see and be: the kittens

you move to a neighborhood: that neighborhood has certain values, a certain way of doing things. you adapt to them. but then, by adapting to them, you also uphold them. i moved to this house in a small town. this particular block is a type of cat zone - which i did not know when i moved here. there's a central hub across the street: one woman who feeds stray cats. other women do this as well, but this is clearly the main citadel. from this epicenter is a blast radius extending about two blocks in every direction. if you go for a walk, you see cats. they're just part of the environment. now, i adopted a few of these cats - really, they chose me. either they lead a brutal kamikazi-esque campaign to be admitted into my home, or they were extremely small and pathetic and i gave them some refuge. i let them into my house and thus took over their stewardship. these cats still roam the neighborhood - they do cat things. but in my mind, this was totally ethical. i've actually reduced the amount of wild cat-ness by virtue of keeping them inside about 50% the time. if i took no action here, there would actually be more wild cats around, not less. i'm not sure it would be totally ethical to buy a few cats, and suddenly release them into the neighborhood whenever they wanted, thus making them everyone else's problem. but i actually did the opposite of this: the cats were everyone else's problem, and i took over their stewardship. i did not cause the cats to be here. but someone moving into this neighborhood could easily have a problem with this. they did not sign up to live in a type of cat safari zone. but, that's just what the neighborhood is. i didn't do that. what's more, this status has become quasi-official. people drive here to abandon their cats that they don't want. they get in their car, drive to this exact specific block, and dump their unwanted kittens into the cat dojo: my neighborhood. bizarre - but i also did not cause or endorse this. in a sense, the culture of this exact specific few blocks, this micronation, has infected me. i am now a cat person. in a way, this makes me an enforcer of the "culture". but in another sense, i can't do anything about it. long before i let a few cats into my life, i would see these rogue hedgeknight cats: in my bushes, in my backyard, sleeping on my car. if i kicked out or sold or adopted out all of my cats tomorrow, it wouldn't change the situation here, at all. nothing can really be done about it - at least by me personally. i'm not going to go and round up dozens of stray cats and get rid of them. this would require some type of anti-cat squadron, and some of them ostensibly belong to people. so i look at people moving in, which happens rarely, and see them as someone, unbeknownst to themselves, moving to a tiny island. it has its own way of being. there's going to be a cat sleeping on your porch here. it's going to happen. is that normal? i don't know. do you have a valid ethical complaint about this? probably. but, what are you going to do? build an iron wall around your house? they'd probably climb it. you're just going to adapt to it - probably. it happened to me. i suppose it happened to everyone here. in a way, perhaps all culture is like this: brought into our lives by small carriers that are, in the end, impossible to fence out.

lack of people pairing up into couples and getting married reduces social cohesion in unexpected ways. we got new neighbors. saw the guy outside, said hi. turns out his sister died the day he moved in. obviously, him and i never discussed this. but his wife told my wife - only the two women would communicate that. so my wife got them flowers - and gave them to his wife. now, we’re basically friends overnight. but there’s no way the two men in the situation (him and i) would have done this absent the women. i wouldn’t get a guy flowers (bizarre, to me) and he wouldn’t (from his perspective) dump this information on some random guy he doesn’t know. you begin to understand the complex formalities present in cultures like victorian england or feudal japan that carved clear avenues and back channels for things like this.
