Probably offer them two tiers; first innitial flow being some client/app created specifically around this campaign (which aids in the keybackup, but also a default feed and default relay, default group etc.. And then from there ways that leads them to stuff like amber and 'regular' clients.

As for password bruteforcing...well, yeah...whatever. you can add some password best practices on the letter, but with these things i think you should not overthink it. Its just so that if someone grabs your card you are not instantly pwned as would be the case with a raw nsec

I have said this before, but an ncryptsec on a nfc card/tag is probably the best minimal viable nostr-key back-up solution i can think off.

To expand on that. If there is any bazillionaire willing to trow away money on something stupid: how about just sending a physical letter to a whole municipality or province or state or country or whatever that includes such a nfc card.

The letter simply explains to people that digital liberty finaly has arived, they don't have to sign any contract or pay anyone anything. A couple of onboarding steps and the remark that its not a service and there is no service desk so if they need help they should ask their neigbour or nephew or whatever.

Frankly, just as an object of study i would like to see something like that happening. So send money to my foundation and who knows, i might do it🤷‍♂️

i think both are correct at the same time. In terms of scale there are many order of magnitude differences between the number of people leveraging Nostr and many of the platforms out there. This difference in degree in itself constitutes a difference in kind.

As a result, atleast in this phase, the only option you have is to actively engage, in order to get some interaction, because neither happenstance nor algo will get you there.

I have started to include this heads up into my messaging, because some people might simply not be aware.

What does honestly confuse me is why some people appear to be smug about it, mocking Nostr's current numbers (whatever they may be, who knows). Who do they think they are dunking on, except themselves?

Look, i don't disagree ultimately the people orchestrating the gay-op deserve more attention and scrutiny, and can appreciate the call to recognize the humanity in the other....but.

This is not how it works, however lost these people may be, they, as a group, will just double down, and keep doubling down untill every bit of civilization is consumed, at which point they will double down some more.

Its all well and good some individual here and there can change their mind, and to some extend i will go allong with them being victems. But ultimately we can't 'excuse' their degeneracy, there must be consequences. Pointing at them as an example of degeneracy as a means to disgust any sensible person into what way NOT to go, is totally valid.

You can be sympathetic all you want, and the point is not that non of this is not tragic, but tragic or not, does not change that as a phenomenon, it can't be reasoned with. And to the extend you can, you have to ask yourself if we even have the time/energy/resources to do so.

So no, we don't need to stop talking about Nostr, we need to normalize it in peoples heads. The fact you even relate the matter to a list of platforms is already a sign you might be missing the point, and could benefit from talking about Nostr some more

To potentially be seen by everyone, and to potentially see everything. This was the step change the internet introduced into society. Practically, time and space were condensed to irrelevance, no longer did you need to be at the right time in the right place. The data is there, patiently waiting on connected computers for the moment it is requested, by whoever for whatever reason.

At least in some abstract sense. In reality there are many ifs and buts about this. Not all these connected computers are open to anyone at any time for any reason. Not all data is preserved, and is not available forever. The sheer amount of data is simply too much to process and needs filtering and judgment as to what is relevant.

Aside from all these realities that might temper the bold claim this piece opened with, something else is at play. Something not as unavoidable as the restrictions mentioned already: the rise of the platform.

Platforms generally speaking do three things, and they actually relate to aforementioned issues of access, retention and relevancy. The platform grants you an account, an identity to log in with, determining who has access and who does not. The platform hosts the data, paying the bills for all the physical server infrastructure required to maintain all that data and make it available. Lastly, these platforms index all the data, providing users with the means to search as well as suggestions via algorithms.

From this perspective, the emergence of platforms was a way to deal with the problems while still delivering on the promise to potentially be seen by everyone, and to potentially see everything. And it worked, the world is connected and in a mere flash,something from the margins is able to reach the mainstream. Going viral leveled a playing field otherwise determined by privileged access. With a bit of effort, any voice can be found and heard.

Yet, for some reason, person that created one of the bigger platforms laments how things went. For some reason, people attempted to redesign the model away from platforms. This is because underneath its seeming achievement, the platform way of organizing ourselves on the internet created a whole list of problems of its own. It made a handfull of people responsible for...everything. Who is allowed in, who is allowed to participate and why, and for how long. What is allowed to be shared, and for how long will it remain available. What is allowed to be found, what is recommended, deemed relevant and pushed to the forefront and to whom, and what is pushed back and marginalized.

With platforms, we created an infrastructure to manage the problems inherent to the internet as such, but at the same time, due to its design, it determined something about this management itself. Fortunately for this management, but unfortunately for the rest of us, there is no easy way out.

The shape of the promise to potentially be seen by everyone, and to potentially see everything has been put into platform-shaped boxes. The way we delivered on it is by most of us going into the same box such that most people can see, and be seen, by most of everyone. The value of the box increased the more people joined the box; the more people joined the box the closer it got to delivering on the initial promise of the internet.

Platforms not only became a way to mitigate the problems of the internet, they became the means of the internet itself. Their position reinforced by this phenomenon of network effect, where once most everyone is already in a particular box, everyone else who wants access to this promise of the internet is left with no other option but to get in line and join that box as well. This also means that for most intents and purposes, leaving the box is not viable, because any alternative is not a real alternative as such.

So we are captured, stuck. In this series of articles I will walk across the landscape pointing out various consequences of the fact that the collective ‘we’ all depend on the same set of boxes to see and be seen.

Any complaint is only relevant in light of a solution. But such a solution can only become clear if the architectural nature of the problem, and the consequences that result from it, are in view first.

I have seen the wording/framing before, and it bothers me...it is wrong.

On one level its the words used such as 'account' and 'service'. Your Nostr profile is not an account, the apps you use are not a service (they might contain services perhaps).

These words/terms subsequently omit the entire paradigm shift. I understand you somehow have to meet the reader in their understanding of the world.

Relays are services, and on that level you 'take things elsewhere', those things being your publications. But other than that, you don't 'move' when you switch clients. And it is relevant when going into the line that directly follows:

"A similar approach has been used by X rivals Bluesky and Mastodon."

But it is not. Nostr does not have a similar approach to ATproto or Activitypub. Nostr has a fundamentally different approach, and it there are hints to that in the fact the article talks about "Bluesky" and "Mastodon" in the first place.

There are still people that don't fully realize what is going on, and think "Nostr" as a term and concept can fade into the background somehow, yet i would ask those people what term they expect those type of mainstream articles to use at some point. They use Bluesky, they use Mastodon....but if you have not noticed yet, they also use Nostr.

Perhaps harder to 'market', it is the only term/word that makes any sense to use. Saying Bluesky and Mastodon is 'good enough', but what would be the easy to market 'good enough' term replacement for Nostr? Tell me? 'Primal'? 'Divine'? 'Buzz'? None of those make any sense when you want to refer to the underlying concept/phenomena. I guess you could say there is 'fediverse' on the activitypub side of things, which got some traction and works. But realize that we don't have to come up with a new marketable term for Nostr, because Nostr was not dominated by a single implementation in the first place that requires 'term-circumvention'.

Anyway, i know get a lot into the semantics here, but i do so to point towards what is underlying all of that. That we should not stop trying to convey to others the actual paradigm shift that Nostr introduces. And that seems like a pointless effort with 0 results because that is inherrent to new paradigms; innitially people lack the mental framework because it simply did not exist before, so talking about it confuses them because it has nothing to land into in their heads.

That is ok. Its this stupid thing where you only get it after the fact when you already understand, much like a riddle. But it is a mistake to therefor conclude that giving the riddle beforehand is pointless, it is not. It is the combination of these injected free floating unsettled ideas, notions and terms that innitially make no sense, and a subsequent hands on experience of the new paradigm that ultimately lead towards the 'aha-moment'. If you did not provide the riddle, or worse, gave them a borked explanation because it was easier to take a bunch of shortcuts that alligned with their current understanding, you undermine the aha-moment.

And we need people to get to that insight, however hard that road may be. Because only then can they truelly start to leverage the abilities the new paradigm provides them, have compentence and therefor confidence in navigating it. It is only then they start to become real Nostr users, and as a result the real added value of Nostr as such start to manifest, its horizontal network effects start to get traction, and the only real hope we have to outcompete the legacy or alternatives out there.

Don't get me wrong, i take the win that the letters n-o-s-t-r are printed by the BBC. People having seen the word in the first place is where it all starts. But i won't stop pushing this point that our words/terms matter, and that the new paradigm of Nostr is not hard, it is just new; and that the only way to make it not-new, is by endlessly providing the correct framing, so that one day they will come to understand.

Dear Nostr,

On the 7th of October, there will be a Open Source Conference in Luxembourg. I suspect the target audience will be the semi-normie public/private sphere, but mostly public sector, education etc.

Also i suspect this is very much intended as fediverse party. The whole fediverse thing got some traction ever since the EU decided it needs to become more independend from US "Big Tech".

I am pretty sure most of not all of these people are not even aware Nostr exists, it is simply not part of the conversation. Lets see if we can change that.

Ideally we hit them from all angles, demonstrating how Nostr already managed to eclypse in a few short years what this fediverse has been struggeling to acomplish in a decade.

Their theme this year is ''Leading by example in Digital Sovereignty'', and we are, so lets make them aware of it. At the very least we can shoot our shot; if they happen to be so biased towards the fediverse that we are not even welcome, so be it, only one way to find out.

There are 2 weeks left to submit. Lets see if we can coordinate a bit such that we are not in eachothers way. Hopefully if we can manage to get all the type of talks/workshops/training established among all their main tracks, and throw these people a curveball.
