Costs driven by the diseconomies of scale of a centralized provider trying to service ALL of a vast and low density area are immense to point that the business may not be viable. If this wasn’t the case, service delivery in the low density areas of Detroit would look a whole lot different, for instance, and those places still have a lot more density that the rural areas Starlink claims to be building its business around.

Well then, outside of regulatory shenanigans, this might suggest that it was not presently economically viable for existing telecoms to extend traditional Internet upgrades to certain low density rural areas in the US. And if that it is the case, then hundreds of billions of capex dollars poured into starlink satellite internet is likely NOT going to find a customer base to provide enough demand or margin to justify those capex investments, especially once government subsidies / tax-payed funded contracts dry up. Hence, SPCX is a capital destroying malinvestment machine.

Providing a solution to a problem that loses money doesn’t mean the problem isn’t real, it just means the solution isn’t likely to be around that long in the grand scheme of things.

Anyways, addressing the marginal cost of energy would be far more effect way to improve the economic is extending services to low density areas. It would be, quite objectively, one the best things we could do for the economy at large and for human flourishing in general.

Elon certainly gets credit for ambitious and “thinking big” but neither of these is the same thing as “economically viable.” Nor does that scale of ambition or vision mean that a big idea will be viable at some point in the future, or at all.

My issue with SPCX is that Internet and phone calls are things that have already been solved - they just feel shitty in the US being hamstrung by legacy regulation and infrastructure. Go to any major city in Asia or Africa and you’ll find a competitive market offering of blazing fast unlimited internet and cellular service for a few dollars a month.

There are places in the world where internet access is lacking but if we really care about human flourishing the issue in those places is more often access to power (and therefore refrigeration, clean/modern cooking technology, nocturnal lighting, etc), which SPCX does nothing to address (I do not consider this to a “fault” of SPCX, just a statement that challenges that assumption / narrative around product market fit)

Fundamentally I question the logic of hundreds of billions of dollars of investment to deliver satellite internet to places where either a) internet is already solved or b) the would-be rural customer base has far larger problems while also lacking the money of SpaceX kit. Especially when we already have a globally scale supply chain to deliver internet and cellular to places at very low cost. A technology being new, does not presuppose that it is actually better.

Also most, or really all, of Elon’s moon shoots have yet to pay off in terms of free market economic viability. Tesla is not a viable company without subsidies. SpaceX is not a viable company without subsidies. Humanoid robotics are simply not economically viable. What does the Boring Company even do and where is the hypertube, or whatever he’s calling it now?

Also, that Musk’s companies are not at the forefront of agitating for broad and rapid American nuclearization, is very telling to me. This is a fundamental base input all of his companies would benefit from massively and that is required for the logical extension of all of his “vision”but he’s happy to sell us all stories while sucking up our tax dollars.

And China IS nuclearizing so I wouldn’t be surprised if Elon is living in Beijing come 2035 once he’s conned America for all he can get.

When Money Dies is a good look at the Fiat fuckery driven interim between WWI and WWII.

WWI was a strange and incestuous European civil war, as all of the leaders all basically all of the major players on both sides of the war were related to the British Royal Family.

When Money Dies chronicles the the acute hyper-inflationary period that wracked Germany (an also Austria and Hungary) between 1921 and 1924. It is cautionary history about the predictable, deleterious effects of currency collapse on all facets of human behavior, from the individual up to the society as a whole.

Core to the book is a critical examination of the dark absurdity that unfolds when a currency charts a parabolic path towards 0 on unit value — “At the end of 1923, it would have been possible to exchange a shilling or franc or lira for up to 1,000,000,000,000 marks […] The marks was dead, on million-millionth of its former self.”

One of the book’s key points is that the range of numbers involved during hyper-inflation so defy human comprehension that they are meaningful only in the scope and scale of their meaninglessness. While at the same time, people grossly misunderstand what is happening to their money. Rather, as Fergusson aptly points out, most “assume not so much that their money was falling in value as that the goods which it brought were becoming more expensive.”

And this can have nasty, even catastrophic outcomes as people lash out to assign blame, often violently, everywhere except where it is truly due - that being, at the feet of the nation’s central bankers and captured politicians, who, seeking to avoid austerity or “revolution,” unleash something far, far worse. A run-away money printing that inevitably still defaults into economic austerity and revolutionary political headwinds — but making them orders of magnitude more extreme than they might have been otherwise.

Here’s how is goes:

When people finally realize that their currency has completely lost its store of value, it ceases even to be a medium of exchange and then, all hell breaks loose…

The exceptionally shrewd may sense what’s broken, well before it is evident, and benefit by way of defensive capital flight, financial arbitrage, and / or outright profiteering.

The monied members of the professional and rentier class pursues the “smart decision” of chasing after asset speculation (like stocks and real estate) - completely misunderstanding that even with these assets they will ultimately loose in real terms. In essence, confusing the slowest sinking vessel for one of pristine seaworthiness.

The asset-less salaried middle class, with static pay, find themselves among the earliest to be completely overtake by inflation, wiping them out in short order, and swelling the ranks of the political extremes with the well-educated but now dejected, a easy hallmark of particularly dangerous and effective radicals.

The hourly wage workers, at first gloat, oversure as they confuse nominal wage increases for real purchasing power gains only to lapse into destitution when the factories inevitably shutter.

The agrarians, content to rest on a fat harvest, withhold output or profiteer against urbanites until something breaks and the urbanites come to the countryside themselves to kill and eat.

And the captive rich, those who do not or cannot leave, finding themselves over-flush with declining paper, must rush to spend it — feeding the industries of gluttony, hedonism, speculation and vice — that is until one revolution or another sweeps in and puts all their backs against the wall.

In many ways the book is very simple and could stand to be much shorter. In documenting the history, the book’s same points are made over and over and over and over again - but perhaps that’s also the point… Inflation sucks, hyper-inflation kills, and the incentives of politicians, especially in democratic systems, will all but assure that they can only make the situation worse and worse, and finally, worse still. The road to Hell is paved with literal bricks of debased currencies.

As a bitcoiner and a reader who sees more than a few parallels between today’s global money system and the economic conditions at play in 1920s Germany, it is easy to come away with a dreary and pessimistic outlook for our present timeline, yet I see something different — in fact, I see profound reason for hope.

History does not repeat, but it often rhymes — but with today’s dramatic advances in technology, the rhyme stands to be very different this time. The problem in 1920s Germany was that the overwhelming majority of people holding marks did not have any viable way to get off the ride as it spun faster and faster and ever-more precariously out of control. Today, this is simply not the case. We have bitcoin - an unstoppable, permissionless, debasement-proof currency that is accessible to everyone, globally.

For the first time in history, everyday people will have an unblockable exit to use when the present spread of government currencies inevitably falter and collapse. This, I believe, will provide significant cushioning against some of the most extreme excesses seen in 1920 Europe (or worse, 1930-40s Europe) and other more recent currency debasement crises.

And while surely there will be those who, out of fear, envy, and political manipulation turn to blame the crisis on the solution — as though it was the lifeboats that sunk the Titanic or the parachutes that downed the plane — the fact that the escape route is accessible to all should dampen this (potentially very dangerous) reactionary movement. Simply put, this time, the calamity needn’t be shouldered by everyone, or if we’re honest about it, by much of anyone at all…and this is reason for great hope.

Turning now to final thoughts about the book. It is an extremely detailed and elucidating chronicle of the long tail of human miseries let loose upon society when a currency collapses — but it is also frustrating to read and poorly written in many ways.

Like some Byzantine space opera, the book should begin with a cast list of key players, but instead the never ending merry-go-round of financial and political actors are introduced as though the reader already knows who they are. But then again, I think the author would argue that “who they are” does not much matter.

Another strange quirk that I could not ignore is that while the author takes pains to demonize anti-semitism — and scapegoating in general — as regressive and dangerous, he also seems to go out of his way to repeatedly underscore the Jewishness of the few of the book’s political / financial villains that do happen to be Jewish themselves.

In all, When Money Dies is several hundred pages book that probably should have just been an essay. It is full of interesting, illuminating, and lucid historical tidbits and pointed financial and ideological analysis of era, but it plods and meanders and, maddeningly, jumps around with dates in a way that makes a mockery of linear time. As such, It is not hard for the reader to come away more than a bit stupefied at what they just read — but perhaps this an unavoidable side effect of an earnest treatment of the topic — art imitating life, and a little unrequested taste of the times for the reader.

Like a Bitcoiner Litany Against Fear, “Bitcoin is trustless” is a mantra soulfully and sincerely recited by acolytes of the technology. And it is true – Bitcoin is trustless. No single entity can control or force changes onto the Bitcoin network. With enough intension, insomuch as you can access to the necessary tools, no intermediary can prevent you from buying, selling, spending, holding, or otherwise using bitcoin, even under the most repressive of circumstances.

Bitcoin is trustless, but bitcoining...bitcoining is all about trust! Across self, family, friends, and community, bitcoining forces trust dynamics to the surface and forms a lived experience of reimagined and rebuilt interpersonal and social trust structures that extend far beyond the timechain.

Developing Trust in Self

Bitcoining is, first and foremost, a practice of radical self-trust. As a bearer money, any and all mistakes resulting in loss of bitcoin rest squarely at the feet of the individual holder and, after the fact, can only be worn like a heavy iron dunce cap by the same. As such, bitcoiners must first conquer their inner doubts and develop an unshakeable internal trust in self. This is the foundation of personal responsibility required to take full control of one’s financial life and to shoulder, without fear or doubt, the sobering awareness that the wealth (and perhaps freedom) of one’s self, family, and future progeny may well hinge entirely on the “rightness” of one’s decisions around bitcoin today.

Rebuilding Trust in Family

A few months ago, I found myself explaining the nature of bitcoin self-custody for inheritance to a senior private wealth management executive. As the implications became clear to her, in a moment of unfiltered horror, she exclaimed “you mean as I get older, I would have to trust my children with this?” My response, of course, “Who else but your own children should you trust to secure your bitcoin wealth as you age?” Confronted with my rebuttal, she did not have an answer, but I could tell that it was being digested as food for thought.

The sad truth is that the fiat world orchestrates a pervasive and never-ending psyop to estrange us from family – and to thus divorce us from the powerful benefits of intergenerational family economics. Bitcoin fixes this. Bitcoining with a focus on long-term and generational wealth is a strong catalyst for us to reject the unbalanced, scorched-earth consumerist "individualism" that now increasingly pits young against old. With our new bearings as bitcoiners, we realize that it is time to heal generational rifts in our families and that many priceless things are regained from rebuilding lost bi-directional familial ties of economic support and care. Bitcoin wealth being “stacked” today will mean very little unless there are associated immediate and extended family units with strong bonds of shared trust and trust-distributed risk in place to shepherd keys far into the future.

Deepening Trust in Friends

While bitcoin’s monetary network might make us “free” (at least from time-theft), it is parallel human networks that must ultimately make us happy and give our lives meaning. It is best that we understand that happiness, more than anything else, is the opposite of loneliness – and that this is one of the few things that money truly cannot buy. The double-edge sword of bitcoining is that without strong supporting bitcoiner friendships, bitcoin’s promise of extreme future wealth threatens to bring an even more extreme isolation along with it for many. And humans die in insolation...It’s dangerous to go alone, as they say. Who will you be able to turn to when the world sees you as little more than a walking sat symbol?

The preemptive remedy here is seeking out and cultivating meaningful friendships with other bitcoiners and, like Noah before the flood, working to get your most important nocoiner friends on the boat before it’s too late. Bitcoiner friendships form the social layer of bitcoin wealth protection and can provide a broad range of “social insurance” against catastrophe – economic or otherwise. As such, bitcoiner friendships are integral to one’s wider “real-world” bitcoin security model and must not be overlooked. Ask yourself – what’s the point of having nice things if you have no one to share them with?

Leveraging Trust in Pseudonymous Community

Scenario: You arrive in a foreign country. An anon that you “know from the internet" suggests you to reach out to another anon who supposedly lives in city you’re visiting. Upon making contact, you receive GPS coordinates – I repeat, coordinates, not an address – via an encrypted chat set to “burn after reading” mode as an invite to come hang out with a group of local bitcoiners.

Totally normal stuff, right? 😅 Well, this is essentially the situation I stumbled into not long ago whilst traveling in Asia. Ultimately, I felt comfortable joining this meetup because of the nature of the larger bitcoiner community. All of us in the room might have been nyms to each other but we shared mutual friends who could cross-verify us without divulging unnecessary private information, of course. In bitcoin, and a few other very strange communities that I count myself a member of, meetings like these serve a critical function for broader, distributed reputation and trust building within what is otherwise a semi-transient, geographically dispersed, pseudonymous community.

In such situations, good behavior confers all parties with important trust-based social capital. The mutual friend gains reputation as someone who “does not associate with or recommend shitcoiners / bad actors.” The meetup attendees, if they behave, are more likely to be recommended by both the mutual friend and by each other the next time around. Thus, a positive social feedback loop emerges, with bitcoiners going around saying nice things about each other and having those things largely proven to be true in subsequent real world interactions. The implications here are far-reaching – as these positive vibrations flow through bitcoin’s living human terrain, they amplify and accelerate the chance meetings and serendipitous exchange of ideas from which the future household names of bitcoin tools, enterprises, and communities will certainly be born.

Conclusion

For most, certainly myself included, engaging with bitcoin forces a dramatic and comprehensive reshaping of both one’s understanding of and relationship with trust. Ironically, bitcoining, which starts out as an individual endeavor to harness the transformative power of trustless money in one’s life, all but requires the establishment of both internal and social trust models that are more robust and more meaningful, than anything our fiat-minded precoiner selves could have ever imagined. Bitcoin is trustless. But bitcoining is nothing without trust.

I totally get this. My way of thinking is that the mistake we made was all assuming that CC was the “most secure” and “the most impressive” - there was a tremendous marketing and social proof campaign behind this, which made be somewhat wary of the product. The nails in the coffins for me though were the poor UX and them moving away from open source. I point these things out not to scold anyone who used CC but to acknowledge that they were always there.

My feeling is that any person with sufficient bitcoin in self custody should 1) use a passphrase and 2) strongly consider spreading their stack across keys generated by at least two different devices.

To me this the akin to the logic of dice rolling ie “people will store their life saving in Bitcoin but don’t was to spending 30 minutes rolling dice…” similarly “people will store their life saving in Bitcoin but down want to spend a few hundred dollars (where a few hundred dollars is ultimately trivial to the person / size of the stack) to have key exposure across several devices.” So my view is that again, folks with stacks that are material to them should strongly consider doing one or both of these things. Additionally, get a stamping kit, back up keys on metal.

The ETF’s 20 layers of security can become 20 layers of gatekeeping, obfuscation, and or litigation in any circumstance where they have overwhelming incentive to separate you from you Bitcoin or other brokerage assets.

That said, I believe bitcoin is choose your own adventure. Not perfect solutions, only trade offs. You can do all of these things. Self custody with keys generated with dice and/or across multiple devices + Bitcoin in Multisig + Bitcoin sitting on Brokerage/Exchange + ETF Bitcoin + MSTR/STRC. No one can judge you this and it’s ultimately none of their business.

Finally, in terms of options for self custody. I believe Foundation, Blockstream, and Bitkey are all high quality devices. They are also open source products - and while open source doesn’t guarantee that there are no issues, it raises the likelihood that any issues will be found out in the open and socialized rapidly across the Bitcoin human network (rather than hidden and denied by the company or logged in a zero-day database for “later use”).

I understand the impulse to reposture to exchanges / ETFs on the expectation of “better” security but if the assumption is that all devices are secretly compromised then centralized holders of BTC don’t actually offer any better security just a much larger honeypot to hit.

I have loved capoeira since I saw it on the street in London, summer 2005, before I even knew what it was. It would find me again in the fall of 2005 in New York. I have been with it ever since.

A love of nature has been much slower going. Growing up in a grey, cold weather climate and never being an outwardly athletic kid (as I was very young for my grade so the deck was stacked against me on that), I did not come up with a strong or deep affinity for the outdoors. It was only much later when I would discover kayaking after college that would slowing pull me outside. Now, in recent years, spending most of my time together with my wife, who makes absolute magic in our humble garden, and my mother who loves the national parks, I have grown a much deeper appreciation for the beauty, bounty, wonder, danger, and whimsy of nature. It was always there, I just had to stop and notice it to fall in love.
