Used the seed words in sparrow.
Created new wallets in sparrow.
Transferred all funds
Updated my Mk4 firmware.
Wiped it.
Generated new seeds with dice (that's as far as I'll disclose here publicly)
Imported to Mk4 as an airgapped signing device.
Moved coins back under it's signing authority... But, really, with the seedphrase it's all redundant so that's where the real security has always had to be placed.

The risk was the old RNG for device created seeds. I was guilty of originally using that DESPITE all advisory not to (including by Coinkite on their website). Self custody isn't easy. It shouldn't be easy. When you elect to take personal responsibility every outsourced security detail is a weakness in the system (I don't care if it's a SentrySafe, shlage lock, nest cam, ring doorbell, not getting your wheels retorqued after seasonal change, etc).

Those who give up security for convenience deserve neither. Looking at you Keystone (with no seedphrase? WTF!?). I haven't played with too many other wallets but to watch reviews and there are few I'd consider a valid replacement feature wise.

We don't know how many were sold.

We don't know how many were affected RNG seeds migrated up to new hardware so even by the numbers sold it really could come down to MK3 users.

We don't know how many seeds from those cards were generated for maybe multiple people (family members).

Toyota, since 2019, has not once apologized for the design flaw that leads to their vehicles being stolen. It's a CANbus injection attack. They have rolled out a fix "if you ask for it". They were made aware in 2022 and it took until 2023 for them to "fix it". The CANbus injection is where theives hook into a port behind a headlight and disable all security, unlock the doors, and can drive off.

Additionally, Toyota dealers often install Bluetooth "security" modules that are easily hacked and the cars then stolen. No apologies given.

On top of all that they've had cloud data, including vehicle and customer info, stolen right off their systems.

Schlage locks, often considered best in the business and protecting homes all across north America, had a vulnerability discovered that rendered them useless and easily bypassed.

SentrySafe, the most popular brand of safes for the home or office, have been hacked and cracked repeatedly. The most common crack was a solenoid magnet attack that rendered them useless in under 5 seconds.

Apple produced a phone where that highly touted, snotty, egomaniacal leader you all loved, Steve Jobs, told you it didn't work because "you're holding it wrong".

Ford produced a car that exploded on rear impact.

Boeing produced a plane with new tech that made pilots nervous, didn't educate anyone well enough, and had two major crashes killing 346 people.

My point in this? Building things are hard. We place trust in every decision we make and most of what that entails is trust in people making decisions for us. Mistakes happen. Insurance can only go so far to rectify the situation and one can never fully regain trust in society or the promises made by those you did business with. If you have something of value trust a thief is going to try an take it. I don't care what measure of security you think you have.

I hope Coinkite recovers. I hope they learned from all this. They still produce some of the best hardware in the business with some very innovative features. I don't care about the noise. Trusting an RNG, any RNG, is akin to trusting your seed with an engraver who promises they wiped the memory after use (maybe they did but it could still be recoverable). The defense is that too many bought the influencers' ad read without learning truly what they were doing (how many times do you see "my coins are on that card"?) and the damage in understanding is widespread as it's a "wallet" and not called by it's true nature "signing device". These are expensive lessons for those that lost but you better believe it hardened their "don't trust, verify" nature.

So weird to see so many blaming the CC and looking for a new device where they'll just practice the same poor security hygiene. My advice to one panicked soul:

Don't waste money on a new device. There's nothing wrong with using whatever CC model as a signer The issue was in trusting the RNG to create the seed.
Move your coins to a Sparrow wallet(s). Create first.
Test receive.
Delete.
Recover.
Test send back.
Full move.
Wipe CC.
Update with new firmware.
Roll dice (don't trust RNGs anywhere on any device).
Add 6-8 word passphrase.
Import seed.
Test receieve.
Delete.
Recover.
Test send.
Move back.
Use the CC as the air gapped signing device it was meant to be.

Takes about 2hrs depending on the mempool and you can be rolling dice while waiting for test sends/receives.

Bonus: you get to practice UTXO hygiene at the same time! (Which you've probably been ignoring for too long).

They chose antithetical trust and convenience despite multiple advisories from all to roll dice (including coinkite themselves, Ben in his tutorials, and a ton of others). I recognize that I allowed a trust to use it to generate my seeds. That's antithetical.

I'll be rolling my own (which is what coinkite always advised) when I can.

It's still a secure device for air gapped signing and I'll be importing the new, self generated, seed. I see no reason to buy a new device for what was an RNG issue for seeds it can create. Plus it still has all the other features. (And the Q is still sexy with what it can do like Key Teleport).

Also, I'll be putting a lot more of what I've learned from ArmantheParman has shared over the years.

1) flip 100 into cash. Yeah, yeah, argue all you want but I'm not gonna live to see "hyperbitcoinization" or "Valhalla". That money is going into dividend payers to generate $60k/month. I'm gonna live a good life with the wife.
2) timelock chunks of 100btc 25/50/75/100 years.
3) keep the other100 for just in case and ultimately inheritance. Kids/Grans/greatGrans will inherit along the way.
