Bedtime. Just before lights out, oldest wrathling looks up, "there's a giant grasshopper on the ceiling". I say, "it is huge must be a female" and lift sharp eyed wrathling to catch and safely remove said giant grasshopper. Wrathling expertly pinches it, turns it over and says "spot on dad, it's a female and soon to be mummy grasshopper! Look the ovipositor is just about to come out and her belly is expanded with eggs." How can these little humans know such minute trivia about completely random things and yet be so completely uninterested in whatever happens in the school classroom?

First batch of cleaned ginnan nuts, the fruit of the ginkgo trees. Roasted or cooked, they taste a bit like corn or maize, wonderful snacks, or de-shelled, as tempura or grilled on sticks. Possibly the only fruit eaten both by dinosaurs and humans. If you try them for the first time, take care, as they contain a toxin that can cause nerve damage or death if consumed in large quantities. Less than a handful (3-4) is a decent amount for a beginner adult and go up only as you get used to them. The raw fruits contain butyric and hexanoic acids and smell pretty bad. Cleaning them is best done outdoors wearing gloves.

Panelled doors wasn't a pretty extra but a clever solution to doors expanding with moisture and warping or jamming shut. Because wood expands and contracts in relation to the ambient air humidity (and also rain etc. if outdoors), the wood panels (not nailed or glued) could move freely inside the groves of the frame. This allowed tight doors that shut very close to the door frame, often mere millimeters or fractions of an inch, giving us ncreased privacy and better acoustics. And they look very charming.

Large windows. In theory everyone loves them right? In reality most of these will be perpetually hidden behind curtains yet there are always some people falling for the renderings. Who wants to live with your private life on display to anyone who passes by? In Tokyo where space is limited and high rise apartment buildings go up right next to high rise office buildings there are often agreements between building managements that the offices will draw curtains on all windows and glass walls closer than within viewing distance to any neighboring residential buildings, to preserve some sort of privacy. In reality both the office and the apartments end up with perpetually drawn curtains. What was the point of all that glass in the first place? Our ancestors had much more sense.

The IC card fare-paying system has been in use in Tokyo since November 2001. The quarter century anniversary is coming up. It is a fantastic system for a city like Tokyo (and also cities like Osaka, Nagoya, Yokohama) where tens of millions pass the commuter train and subway gates every day. Far over 200 million cards have been issued so far. However, it is an expensive technology, that requires a lot of maintenance to work well, and it is a luxury rural or smaller cities can no longer afford. The benefits can not motivate the spending. Peak IC seems to have been sometime around 2024, but now more and more railway lines, busses, trams, ferries are abandoning the system as simply too expensive and too complex. If anyone is researching how complex systems peak and decline, this might be a good example subject.

Ok I am finally going to do a "Japanese akiya" (cheap empty home) post. A friend of mine bought a house that had been sitting empty for awhile, not too far from Tokyo. Ok fine. The house had been "fixed up", "made livable", "reformed", before she moved in, presumably by some complete amateur. Now she keeps sending me photos of details of her house captioned "is this ok?" and every photo just keeps getting worse. Example: "What do you think about this retaining wall, it seems leaky doesn't it?" "Are the drainage holes clogged maybe?" "What drainage holes?" "...." and "Look at these mortise holes in the roof timber frame, is it ok to just leave them like this?" "These are supposed to have horizontal beams that stabilize the structure in case of tremors or seismic activity or hurricanes." "The previous owner took them out so he could have an open kitchen floor plan." "Are you free tonight? Let's go to the lumber yard and maybe buy a hammer and chisel on the way." "Why?" And so on. The only worse thing to buy than an akiya is an akiya that has been renovated by house flippers.

There are a few ways to help a brick wall carry the weight of everything above a window opening. Timber, stone, concrete, steel lintel, or an arch. A steel lintel is a common choice today. It is fairly strong, easy installation and lasts 20-100 years depending on the skill of the builders, the location on the house, climate etc. It is vulnerable in fires (it quickly loses strength when heated). Maintenance/replacement is complex and expensive requiring special tools and imported materials (at least the modern ones, old-school steel is more easily available maybe) not especially environmentally friendly by skilled professionals and it involves the partial destruction of that part of the wall. A brick arch over a window is relatively simple to build. It is immensely strong and far more fire resistant. It requires no special materials, you just arrange the bricks the you were already using in a different manner. No special maintenance is required and it will last as long as the brick wall itself. The necessary materials are readily available almost anywhere and uses only renewable resources and energy in a pinch. A brick arch is also charming and easy on the eye.

In 1960 Ho Chi Minh gave an interview in a Soviet political anthology, and even if it is highly unlikely either he or the Soviets told the truth the wording here is interesting (my italics): "At first, patriotism, not yet communism, led me to have confidence in Lenin, in the Third International. Step by step, along the struggle, by studying Marxism-Leninism parallel with participation in practical activities, I gradually came upon the fact that only socialism and communism can liberate the oppressed nations and the working people throughout the world from slavery." Later on and through the rest of his life he would keep repeating the same inconvenient fact: his project was one of extreme nationalism, and ethnic patriotism. Nothing less, and most likely nothing more (in the end, Leninism was just his tool). I don't think the Vietnamese communist government was actively persecuting ethnic minorities in Vietnam though, probably because the Vietnamese population was so dominant and growing so rapidly it wasn't necessary. The most dominant non-Vietnamese ethnicity shrank, mostly due to low TFR and emigration.

When you build with wood windows you know what you get. You can touch and use your own senses to discover leaks or rots or molds or degraded performance. Depending on build quality, location, climate, and maintenance, a wooden window can easily last a century or more and can be replace part by part rather than scrapping the whole thing. A modern window while initially able to provide a far higher insulation efficiency even that soon starts dipping due to mechanical wear, perimeter seal failures, the Low-E coating wearing off, gas fill failure etc. It is not easily maintained so usually it is landfilled and a new window is bought at high cost, and repeat. Not to mention use of non-renewable resources, opportunity cost (support local craftsmen who reinvest in your community!), waste and pollution etc. A traditional window frame can be composted and the materials used for maintenance literally grows on trees.

A lovely detail that common in Japanese homes and buildings 1925-1950 were the kataita-garasu, or patterned glass. It was a relatively cheap and simple way of elegantly solving the problem of how to let in light but keep out prying eyes in the crowded Japanese homes and cities of the era. Popular in private homes but today most surviving example can be seen in historic or surviving architecture of the era, abandoned rural properties etc. The effect of light and shadows, the movement of the sun and the people around it, the swaying greenery seen through it, it makes everything sublime and slightly magical. Truly "Less is more".

The 2008 Sichuan earthquake in Ma'anqiao, destroyed 263 out of 272 houses. Due to extreme poverty and remoteness rebuilding with concrete block or RC was impossible. Instead the village returned to the traditional rammed earth construction methods of the region relying on local materials and labor. The only outside help came in the form of engineers specifically studying how to make rammed earth construction more seismically robust.

Spokane, Washington, has an interesting clause in their municipal building codes: "The height limits do not apply to uninhabitable space under four hundred square feet in floor area that is devoted to to decorative architectural features such as belfries, spires, and clock towers." This code has been in place since at least 2010 but could be earlier. I don't think it has actually lead to any fancy spires or belfries going up in the city but nevertheless it is a tremendous addition that ought to be copied in more municipal codes around the world.

In the 1895 reconstruction of the Higashi Hongan-ji temple in Kyoto the hemp ropes traditionally used were not strong enough to handle the weight of the wooden beams leading to several accidents as the ropes snapped. Carpenters found that mixing the hemp with human hair made for far stronger and more elastic rope so people were asked to donate hair for the building project. In total 53 ropes were made, the largest of which was 110m long and 40cm thick weighing a ton. If you go to Higashi Hongan-ji today you can see one of the mid-sized ropes still on display. Fantastic article and follow-up on a study by Aino Saarinen, released two years ago, that heavily criticized the revolution in the once praised Finnish education system: digital learning tools, removal of teacher authority, etc. Especially delicious is the criticism of the open classroom brain rot: "According to university lecturer Saarinen, schools in Finland have been developed by turning them into "stupid offices", where it is important that students have a nice place, carpeted floors, the latest equipment and great-sounding transforming spaces... – For example, there is a lot of research evidence about open spaces, which shows that the younger the students, the less suitable they are for children of that age. In some Japanese temples you will spot Japanese irises with their leaves braided into artistic knots and shapes. It is said to be done in autumn after the last flowers are gone to keep the garden looking tidy while sparing the leaves (cutting them off too early means weakening the roots and lesser blooming the following year). However this photo is from April so possibly it is just the gardeners showing off their skill. It isn't remotely simple to do this.

Social housing built in Palma, Spain, with rammed earth blocks and load bearing walls. They could of course have built something gorgeous with well planned spaces and a design that made people feel welcome and valued. But such "pastiche" cannot be done by modern architects. Still, load bearing stone is very unusual in these kinds of projects and it proves a point I have been trying to make these last ten years or so: load bearing stone walls are cheaper than most people realize these days super high efficiency quarries and cheap transport.

The vast majority of all antidepressants in the US today are taken by people who would benefit at least as much from just walking more. Have a goal to walk as much as possible, at least an hour a day total, and for best effect walk at your top speed in shoes that are not too soft/insulated without ear-pods or any sort of music or entertainment. Mindfulness is a real thing. Not only can you quit the pills, your physical health will improve, you will live healthier longer, but you will also have time to either work out your problems or at least work yourself out so that the problems pale into insignificance.

The beauty of building with what you have rather than what you are told you need. Tom Ruby (@bgcts) First and foremost, a cordwood dwelling is accessible to anyone with wood and arms to cut and lift it. It is simple. Not easy, simple. If you have wood and mud and ash you can build a home. There's a very old cordwood cabin in Copper Harbor. For us, we peppers 2 summers to do this so that it'd last. We tested last summer by building a chicken coop. Took lessons and incorporated them into this build. We learned that Poplar debark very easily when cut down (and the bark dried rock hard if you cut and flatten it. Can be used for roof shingles. Maple is difficult to debark. Oak easier than maple but only when freshly cut. We made a 10" ruler and sorted the logs with a hand saw and then cut with chain saw. Takes discipline to make plumb cuts. We built a rig to put the logs on to help with plumb cuts. Saved all sawdust for use in mortar. Poplar dries much lighter than oak and maple making it good to use, but we have oak and Maple and Walnut in there as well. Bought inexpensive Poplar framing wood from Amish to frame the cabin for load bearing and are putting cordwood inside the 4x10 framing wood. You can buy portland/type S for mortar but that defeats our purpose of using local materials. Ag line is $12/ton from our local quarry so that is a great filler. We saved wood stove ash over the winter and have more than enough. Clay below the topsoil comes from our hillside. As for mortar discipline, we learned last summer that if too wet it will crack and pull away from the wood. But even that is repairable with pointing and relayering. This time we have a more peanut butter consistency and are leaving space inside the ends of the logs for touching up after it dries. We have a good natural reaction cycle happening with the mortar so that's good. This is an accessible process. It is very forgiving. And it allows for varying anesthetics from lots of big logs with small fillers to all small dowels. All work. I have several books on the process and there are cordwood homes around the world. As covid got going in April 2020 here in Japan I took a lot of photos of the shops, restaurants, streets, parks etc. and I saved the ephemera I found, like flyers, government prints, letters, vaccination requests etc. I had a feeling this ought to be preserved for the future as some sort of physical reminder for our children and coming generations. Maybe others did too. Someday it might become a booth or a panel in a history museum, like how we treat the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920 or the Asiatic Flu of 1957-1958.
