Then you get home, lift the shadows, and discover noise everywhere.

Use the histogram instead.

For most night scenes, push the exposure as far to the right as you safely can without blowing the highlights you care about. Give the sensor real light instead of planning to “fix it later.”

A brighter capture with controlled highlights will usually give you a cleaner file than a dark one you have to rescue afterward.

The LCD can lie to you at night.

The histogram is much harder to fool.

GN. Warm light turns neutral. A scene that looks beautiful at 7:15 can feel completely different twenty minutes later.

So instead of waiting for the “perfect” subject this morning, watch what the light is doing as it changes.

Pick one ordinary scene and photograph it a few times over the next 15 or 20 minutes.

Change nothing if you can help it. Let the light do the work.

Then compare the frames.

Which one has the most depth? Which one feels calm? Which one feels dramatic? Which one would you have missed if you had only taken one photograph and moved on?

That’s the lesson.
