A question for devs here.
How do you guys report security vulnerabilities to Nostr related open source projects that don't have a policy of private reporting?

I found something that *might* be somewhat of a problem and I tried to contact the owner of the repo and he's clearly not accepting my Messages here on Nostr...
I am now waiting for week to pass which I gave for a response - I didn't know of any other way... And during this week I can't really release ... I just have to wait or be irresponsible and just write an issue on the project? Or just do nothing?
How do you guys solve this problem when it happens to you?

I have had Omarchy installed as my daily Linux desktop driver for more than a year now, and it's the first desktop distro that actually stuck with me! I tried for 15 years and always failed until Omarchy first came out... SO I've been around since arond version 2 I belive.. Quattro is such significant improvement I'm really glad I chose it last year already :)

I don't use Tresor and never had an account and I received an email from a completely different company that I do use, which used the same accounting service as Tresor. That company was hacked and that fucked a bunch of other companies by proxy :(

I can't get myself to use Chinese LLMs (or almost anything else tech-wise to be honest) because I hate that they've been stealing Western R&D on state level for decades and then dump-selling us similar tech back without the cost paid for R&D. Looking at my of behaviour and that of many others, I have come to the conclusion that passion is often overrated and simple hard work is underrated.
I've always somehow valued passion more that hard work - and completely without any proof. I'm talking years and years lost.

## The interface, redrawn

The UI font moved from monospace to a system sans-serif — larger, with more breathing room. It reads like a place you'd write and talk, not a terminal. Contrast is properly tuned now: secondary text is actually readable instead of fading into the background. Sidebar labels are in plain Title Case, and the old Unicode symbol-icons (◈ ⟐ ⌕) are replaced with a clean, consistent icon set.

## Themes, redesigned

Vega's themes were, honestly, chosen more by feeling than by design. The three based on well-known palettes — Catppuccin, Nord, Gruvbox — held up fine. The four I'd built myself did not.

layered backgrounds so panels and cards have depth, a genuine text hierarchy, contrast that's been measured rather than guessed. Midnight — the default — went from a flat near-black to a deeper, considered blue-black.

## A new theme: Reader

There's also a new one. Reader is a warm, low-glare cream theme built for comfortable long reading — closer to a printed page than a screen. If you use Vega for long-form articles, it's worth a try.

## Easy-Read Font

In Settings there's a new accessibility option: Easy-Read Font. It switches the interface to Atkinson Hyperlegible — a typeface the Braille Institute designed for legibility, with letterforms built so b/d and p/q don't blur together — plus a little extra letter spacing. It's meant for dyslexic readers, but it helps anyone reading for a long stretch.

## Smoother feed, and smaller things

The feed had some rough edges while scrolling — cards could overlap or flicker. Those are fixed; scrolling is smooth and stable now.

A few more: onboarding shows a progress indicator and lets you back up your key later instead of forcing it up front; and your secret key is now viewable in Settings → Identity, so you can back it up or move to another client any time.

## Nothing it does changed

None of this changes what Vega does — same client, same features, same protocol. What changed is how it feels to use, and how it looks the first time you see it. For an app trying to earn a place on people's desktops, that turned out to matter more than I wanted to admit.

The problem with current encryption

The current specification, NIP-44 v2, was created during simpler times: Nostr was smaller, remote signers were rare, and pasting nsecs was the standard.

Since then, things have changed. Large events are much more common, using remote signers is the norm, and encryption is everywhere.

When you want to allow a Nostr app to encrypt/decrypt data, by default, most signers prompt you to approve or reject it.

Depending on your signer, you might get a prompt that: 1. Shows the raw data.
Good, but you can't know if the [["p", ...], ...] list is the private mute list you wanted to edit, or actually the member list for your group chat. 2. Shows no information at all, just that decryption was requested. Not helpful. 3. Tells you a rough type, such as JSON, or plaintext.
This is much better but has the same problem as 1: Two different contexts can share the same format without being related.

Encrypted data is now integral to most Nostr apps. Applications need access to decrypt to look for new DMs, load your private lists, store application settings, and much more.

The sheer number of decryption requests can cause permission fatigue, leading users to allow all decryption requests without confirmation.

This can be exploited by malicious applications to exfiltrate sensitive conversations, ecash/LN wallet keys, and more:

There has been a discussion about how to allow restricting decryption/encryption, and the conclusion was: The only robust solution is a new AEAD scheme.

It has been 21 months without any progress.

There are also other issues with the current encryption scheme:

Large data

Have you ever tried to use a remote signer with a follow list that is larger than 2000 users? No?

Well, you can't, even if you want to.

Events like this are over the size limit of NIP-44 v2, making it impossible to manage such lists with a remote signer. You instead need to use your nsec directly, or use a browser extension.

Binary encoding

There are many use cases where encrypting binary data can be useful. However, NIP-44 v2 only supports UTF-8 encoded text, and support for binary data is inconsistent.

Some of these use cases include: - Gift wrapped DMs currently incur an unnecessary additional 33% overhead in size, since the seal event's payload is not binary but Base64. - Private user and note lists are 2x larger than they have to be. The content has to be encoded with JSON and hex encoding, requiring 64 bytes per item, instead of a binary encoding that can use 32 bytes.

This overhead adds up, and wastes mobile data and relay resources.

What is NIP-44 v3?

NIP-44 v3 is a new encryption scheme that solves these issues, without introducing any new cryptographic primitives or constructions in Nostr.

Some of the features: - Context binding allows associating specific information about what is being encrypted, and makes it possible to have granular access control. - Binary encoding is supported for the plaintext. - The 64KB message limit is gone, and message sizes can be as large as what your code and relays can process. - It is designed to allow implementation on signers with restricted resources, such as secure elements, while preserving access control over the context. - Clients can support NIP-44 v2 and v3 at the same time, allowing a smooth transition to more secure encryption.

Context binding

NIP-44 v3 supports context binding, which means each message has an associated context.

The signer can use the context from the message to identify what it is, and accept/deny accordingly: a private message, your mute list, or your LN wallet's data.

Much nicer, isn't it?

This also prevents the usage of an encrypted piece of data, such as a private message, in another context like a long-form draft.

The specific implementation in NIP-44 v3 has two fields: - kind, for the kind of the event. - scope, which is an additional scope that is defined by the specific kind. This can be the d tag, for example.

Getting started

The NIP-44 v3 specification is available at https://spec.nostr.land/nip44v3, and includes the main specification, a less-formal implementation guide, and test vectors.

An implementation of NIP-44 v3 in Go is available as pkg.nostr.land/go/ncrypt. This also supports NIP-44 v2, NIP-04, and provides a way to detect the encryption version used.

The specification is still a draft, but it is unlikely to change except for the formatting, and the addition of new test vectors.

Why not submit it as a NIP now?

I plan to submit NIP-44 v3 to the main NIPs repository at a future date.

However, the NIPs repository's "process" (or lack thereof) significantly slows down the adoption of any new specifications.

For this reason, this specification is released as a standalone repository.

This allows the development of secure encryption to start now, instead of after months of waiting for a single approval from the "official" maintainers.

Some technical details

The cryptography in NIP-44 v3 does not differ significantly from NIP-44 v2.

HKDF is used to derive per-message subkeys, which protects the shared secrets and ensures the keys are unbiased. The main difference includes using info/salt correctly compared to v2, and separate HKDF-Expand calls for each key.

The ChaCha20 nonce is set to all-zeroes, as any given encryption key is only used to encrypt one message due to the subkey derivation.

The encoding has additional fields for the kind and scope, and the MAC now incorporates those as well.

NIP-44 v3 incorporates a slightly modified version of the padding in NIP-44 v2, that increases the uncertainty of the padding size for short messages, like DMs, without much overhead.

The padding used by NIP-44 v3 does not enforce a specific algorithm, but it is strongly recommended that all implementations use the reference algorithm.

Would anyone with a MacOS be willing to test if Vega is working ok on Mac please?
I unfortunately can't test it since I don't own an Apple computer.
I'd be interested to also hear if there's any problems on any of the Linux distros.
All I could do is test Windows versions and Arch which I use, btw ;)

Even if Blackrock and Saylor hold a lot of it, I still don't get how this makes it any worse for those of us who acualyl hold our keys, run our own Core servers and like me also run an Alby hub or two. It might get somewhat centralized but if we do our thing as we should I just don't see a serious problem with the digital gold narrative or with Sailor.
I get you though but I just don't see it as real problem - looking from afar. What I mean by this, is that what Sailor is doing is imho just a minor thing of what is actually coming down the pipe if Bitcoin actually gets adopted by normies out there. Think about all the state actors, some of which will be definetely intent (if we only look down the futre long enough) on destruction and/or manipulation on such a high order this will look like peanuts in comparison.
What worries me is that if we think Bitcoin (or us - the comunity- for that matter) can't handle this, then I'm seriously afraid we're not even remotely prepared for what's coming. And it will come. And it won't be easy to just point to a guy then because it will be coming from all sides nonstop. What we have now... is so small.... sooooo incredibly small compared to what's coming.
Because look... with Sailor... we have a US citizen doing US cotizen things on the open and we already hav ea problem. Think how it will be when 1000s of Sailors coming from places like Pakistan or North Korea or Iran or some othe completely untouchable place (for us) that doesn't give one little piece of shit about what we think or how we feel about it.... That's where I see a real test coming.
I think we better prepare for it and do so with our proven work. We'll have to do our part. We'll have to run competions on how many servers we have in completely different places. Encourage people to do the same... Something... Anything... but just dooming our way furhter.
At least that's how I see it...

I'm sorry.. it was just too easy this time ... ;) ) our own feeds. Unfollow/ignore do some of it, but it's constant work. We need more tools on the client side and I think Wisp is really good at this - possibly the best.
I have employed some filtering features in my own Vega client last week (can be turned off of course) and I can tell you that at least in my own testing, it's like night and day when you look at the Global feed for example. The best I can describe my own feeling that i felt when I first turned it on is that it felt like humans talking again. Don't get me wrong - it's still far from perfect but IMHO it's a step in the right direction if we are to actually make this a communication platform. In my case, ignore was just not enough to make the experience enjoyable.
So, while I am fully dedicated in my Vega development to make this user-switchable and do not gate-keep in the slightest on the relay side of things, I also feel for what @BTC_P2P is trying to say here. Because the truth also is, incentives are the problem whether we like it or not. And 'free' as in 'beer' is just too cheap for most users who actually wanna use it daily for communication. Too much incentives for spamming, bots, scams and whatever else new AI versions will bring on massive scale.
In all honesty, I am sometimes worried that we're a bit blinded and we spit in our own food for what can only be an abstract ideal while reality is turning into a overwhelming wave of bullshittery we won't be able to handle anymore.
Let me explain what I mean: When I first came to nostr the feel of nostr was zapping, good will, good cheer and of course the usual amount of 'fiat is dead' idealistic takes. The overwhelming feel was positive by default. Then spamming started as soon as specific actors realised there's no penalty for it. And from then on it went from bad to worse every half a year.
We lost a lot of people because of that. And the replacement was not of the same, admittedly subjective, quality. Now I'm not shitting on new people, what I'm trying to say is that with each human we got 3 spammers, one crypto guy, and a bunch of randomly created accounts just to spew bullshit and then disappear forever.
Practically every dev is now trying to solve this problem and I hope we can find a good enough solution because percentage wise-humans vs random bullshit/spam/bots/new-not-yet-seen-things-that-are-coming is not in our favour.
The sad truth is that when I returned to nostr after a break on social media it was a bit a of a shock - not a pleasant one. I really like a few people here, and I downright admire the numbner of creative people here, the genius devs and so on, but I am worried it's not sustainable if we don't find a solution that would work for 90% of us who are not here to propagandize and bullshit or hatemonger or spam but would just like to talk and build things.
All I can do here is try my best on my end. But I don't think it's smart to just dismiss what BTC_P2P said and throw it under the 'another gatekeeper' carpet. Because doing so, it might be to our longterm determent.
I hope I'm wrong, but I worry I'm not is the best I can end this long comment

Until then I am simply renting AlbyHub Cloud, but I had to add a new Lightning wallet, set up new Lightning channel...
If you need to set it up, just start with something simple like Umbrel - you'll have a selection of prepared Dockerised Umbrel 'apps' at your disposal for an easy install. They have a whole Bitcoin category in which there's like 15 apps ready to be installed with pretty much a click of a button. That's actually how I had it set on my last computer (the one that then died).
All you need is like 1.6TB of space and the same amount someplace else as a backup. I didn't have the backup functionality enabled because I didn't have enough free space on my backup computer - and now I'll have work to get it all back. Otherwise.. it would be a click of a button.

And I got immediately pessimistic about the future if we get big. But the truth is we cant stop this, so we have to find solutions within our space. I think that is the only realisitc way onward. We can share the tech with retards but then maybe adopt separate spaces within it in some way. it would align with the decentralised model philosophicaly. Personaly im experimenting with some kind of mixture with groups that are localised around a single point, while also keeping the tech layer below it.
