Bitcoin traded near $60,000 in early February and the Fear and Greed Index printed a <strong>9</strong>, the bleakest reading since FTX blew up.</p> <h3 id="spring-the-false-dawn-5">Spring: the false dawn</h3> <p>Price climbed back above $80,000 in April, then rolled over as the conflict with Iran pushed inflation higher and Fed officials started talking about raising rates instead of cutting them.</p> <p>Money that might have come to Bitcoin went chasing AI stocks instead. The dollar firmed up, and ETF holders who had bought near the top started heading for the exits. By late June Bitcoin was back under $60,000.</p> <h3 id="june-the-sale-that-stung-5">June: the sale that stung</h3> <p>In the middle of all that came the one that stung the most. On June 1, Strategy disclosed it had sold 32 bitcoin, its first sale since 2022. The amount was pocket change for a company holding more than 843,000 coins, and the stated reason was dull, just cash for dividends on its preferred stock.</p> <p>Nobody cared about the reason. The loudest never-sell voice in the room had sold, price slid under $72,000 within hours, and in July the company followed up with a sale worth around $216 million to build a cash cushion.</p> <h3 id="september-two-punches-in-two-days-5">September: two punches in two days</h3> <p>On the 15th the Senate voted <strong>49 to 50</strong> on a procedural motion for the CLARITY Act, the market structure bill the industry had spent more than a year negotiating. It needed 60, and its biggest champion in the Senate said flatly that it was over. On the 16th the Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time in more than three years and signaled another hike could come before Christmas.</p> <p>Stack all of that up and the gloom makes sense. A peak, a crash, a war, a hero who blinked, a bill that stalled on the floor and a central bank tightening the screws. If you only read headlines this year, you&#39;d think the whole experiment was coming apart.</p> <hr> <h2 id="why-it-hurts-this-much-5">Why It Hurts This Much</h2> <p>Price drops are nothing new here. Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% several times and came back each time with more users than before. So why does this one feel heavier?</p> <p>My read is that a lot of us borrowed our conviction this cycle. A public company bought every week and that felt like safety. Then the ETFs arrived, politicians started wearing Bitcoin pins and talking about national reserves, and all that noise quietly stood in for our own understanding. When those props wobbled, it felt like the floor was moving.</p> <p>Picture a buddy who swears his used truck is bulletproof because the dealer told him so. The first flat tire feels like a betrayal. Trucks get flat tires, and what actually broke was a story somebody else sold him about it.</p> <p>Look at what Bitcoin itself promised:</p> <ul> <li>A new block roughly every ten minutes</li> <li>A hard ceiling of 21 million coins</li> <li>A public ledger anyone can check</li> <li>Coins that nobody can freeze once you hold the keys</li> </ul> <p>It kept every one of those promises through the crash, the war, the Senate vote and the rate hike. It never promised a price or a friendly vote in Congress, and it never needed either one to keep working.</p> <p>The disappointment is real and I won&#39;t wave it away. Most of it came from expectations we stacked on top of Bitcoin, and very little came from Bitcoin.</p> <hr> <h2 id="the-grass-across-the-fence-5">The Grass Across the Fence</h2> <p>Then there&#39;s the other mood on the feed, the one that&#39;s louder than sad. Every morning brings a fresh eulogy. Some of these posts come from people who have been here longer than I have, and that&#39;s exactly why they deserve to be sat with instead of scrolled past.</p> <p>The privacy worry is fair, and I&#39;ll say that plainly. Starting this year, exchanges have to report who owns which wallets to tax authorities, and chain surveillance is a real industry with paying customers. If your coins sit on an exchange with your name, your address and a photo of your license attached, you have every right to feel exposed.</p> <p>So a lot of people watched Monero break its 2018 record in January while Bitcoin slid, and they took it as a verdict. Then look at what happened next. It ran from around $410 to nearly $800 in a few weeks, gave most of it back, and was sitting near $320 by July. The folks who rotated in at the top didn&#39;t find sovereignty. They found the same chart they were running from, with thinner markets and fewer places to sell.</p> <blockquote> <p>Price chasing in a privacy costume is still price chasing.</p> </blockquote> <p>What bothers me more is how fast the cynicism travels. Every doom post teaches some newcomer that the smart move is to leave, and that newcomer has no way of knowing the author was bleeding when he wrote it. Complaining in public feels like honesty to the one doing it. A lot of the time it&#39;s just pain looking for company.</p> <p>Privacy on Bitcoin is a skill, and nobody hands it to you. You can pull your coins off the exchange and hold your own keys. You can run your own node so your wallet stops telling a stranger&#39;s server everything you own. You can receive with silent payments, and you can move value through Lightning and ecash that were built for exactly this. Hold some Monero if it serves you. Just don&#39;t let one bad year convince you Bitcoin can&#39;t be private, when the tools are sitting right there waiting for someone to learn them.</p> <p>Before the next eulogy goes out, sit with a harder question.</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>Did Bitcoin fail you, or did you hand the job of believing in it to somebody else?</strong></p> </blockquote> <p>I&#39;ve had to ask myself that one too, and the answer wasn&#39;t comfortable.</p> <hr> <h2 id="what-the-chart-doesn-t-show-5">What the Chart Doesn&#39;t Show</h2> <h3 id="the-big-money-stayed-5">The big money stayed</h3> <p>While the timeline was grieving, the people with the longest time horizons were doing something quiet. An asset manager sat down this spring with fifteen large institutions, the kind that run endowments, public pensions and sovereign wealth funds. Across a drawdown of roughly 50%, <strong>not one of them cut its allocation</strong>, and several bought more. When asked what would make them sell, none of them mentioned price.</p> <p>The selling came mostly from hedge funds and short-term traders, the crowd that always leaves when it stops being fun. One sovereign wealth fund said it was paying for part of its position by selling foreign currency and gold reserves. A country&#39;s savings account traded some of the oldest store of value on earth for the newest one, in the middle of a bear market, and almost nobody noticed.</p> <h3 id="the-network-didn-t-flinch-5">The network didn&#39;t flinch</h3> <p>Hashrate, the raw computing power guarding the ledger, crossed a zettahash in January. Weeks later a brutal winter storm in Texas knocked as much as a third of it offline on the worst days. Blocks kept coming, the difficulty adjusted the way it was designed to, and the miners came back when the power did. Try to name another system that can lose a third of its security force overnight and keep running without calling a meeting.</p> <h3 id="the-builders-kept-building-5">The builders kept building</h3> <p>Bitcoin Core 32 is in final testing for an October release that speeds up how nodes verify blocks, which makes it cheaper to run your own. Developers have also mapped out a multi-year move to quantum-resistant addresses, well ahead of any real threat.</p> <blockquote> <p>You won&#39;t hear about this work on the news because nobody gets liquidated when a pull request merges.</p> </blockquote> <h3 id="september-told-on-the-market-5">September told on the market</h3> <p>The CLARITY Act stalled and the Fed hiked on back-to-back days. The last time the Fed started hiking, in 2022, Bitcoin went on to lose more than 70% of its value.</p> <p>This time it dipped, steadied and climbed back above $80,000 within two days. It went on to print an eight-month high above <strong>$87,000</strong>, helped by a day of nearly a billion dollars flowing into the spot ETFs. If the month closes green, July through September becomes the first run like it since 2012, and the Fear and Greed Index that read 9 in February is sitting in the high 60s.</p> <p>A market that shrugs off a stalled bill and a rate hike in the same week is telling you who&#39;s left holding. Mostly it&#39;s people who aren&#39;t planning to leave.</p> <hr> <h2 id="where-we-go-from-here-5">Where We Go From Here</h2> <p>I&#39;ll be honest about the risks first. The Fed has signaled another hike before year end, and the CLARITY Act needs eleven more votes with the calendar running out ahead of the midterms. Nobody knows where price goes this quarter, and anyone who tells you they do is probably selling a course.</p> <p>What I do know is that morale in this space was never supposed to come from Washington or a company&#39;s buy announcements. It comes from understanding what you hold and actually using it.</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>The cure for borrowed conviction is the earned kind, and you earn it with your own hands.</strong></p> </blockquote> <h3 id="1-hold-your-own-keys-5">1. Hold your own keys</h3> <p>If your coins sit on an exchange or inside an ETF, what you own is an IOU with an orange logo on it. Moving even a small amount into a wallet you control changes how the whole thing feels, the way owning your truck outright feels different from leasing it.</p> <h3 id="2-run-a-node-5">2. Run a node</h3> <p>A node takes custody one step further. You stop taking anyone&#39;s word about the ledger and start checking it yourself.</p> <h3 id="3-spend-a-little-and-zap-a-little-5">3. Spend a little and zap a little</h3> <p>Every sat that moves between two people over Lightning is a small proof that this works as money today, with nobody&#39;s permission. Nostr is the best example we&#39;ve got. People tip each other for good posts and fund the builders making the tools, with no bank or platform standing in the middle taking a cut. That&#39;s the circular economy everyone talked about for years, and it&#39;s running right now in your feed.</p> <h3 id="4-talk-to-people-5">4. Talk to people</h3> <p>Most of the folks who sold this year never had anyone sit with them and explain why Bitcoin exists in the first place. Nobody gave them the reasons, so of course they left when the price did. The next wave will stay if someone patient walks them through the fixed supply and the open ledger, and you already know enough to be that someone.</p> <hr> <h2 id="the-room-gets-loud-again-5">The Room Gets Loud Again</h2> <p>Every bear market in Bitcoin&#39;s history has done the same job. It flushed out the leverage, humbled the loudest voices and left the coins with people who understood them. The builders who stayed through 2018 gave us Lightning. The ones who kept at it through 2022 turned Nostr from an idea into a place people actually live.</p> <p>Whatever gets built this winter is what the next wave of new users will land on. Most of them will never know how cold it was when the work got done, and that&#39;s fine.</p> <p>Most of us found Bitcoin while looking for something that couldn&#39;t be printed or taken, <em>and the rest is the future.</em> That future didn&#39;t get cancelled because a senator switched his vote or a treasury company paid a dividend. It&#39;s being written right now by people who kept stacking and kept building while the chart told them to quit.</p> <p>So pull up your stack tonight and count it in sats instead of dollars. That number only moves one direction unless you sell. The price will do whatever it does, and your part is holding the thing nobody can inflate and helping one more person understand why it matters.</p> <p><strong>The room will get loud again.
