The framing here is very wrong: things can get much worse and not get better for decades, centuries, so it doesn't make sense to claim they will get better at all if all you see is a downward trend.

This slogan is repeated too often, and gives people false hopes and make them apathic, thinking that they should just wait and "survive" while things go through a bad period and then get better. That isn't the attitude we need from the people who know what is going on. We need them to do _something_, not only try to egoistically survive.

Likewise, things _can_ get a lot better without having to get worse. It makes no sense to claim otherwise. This is just doomerism wrapped in a disguise of false prophecy.

It was going brilliantly until 2004, somehow I had a semi-functional recording studio and a group of talented people enthusiastic about about using it, when someone brought in an iPod, and with it the 'so what?' problem.* I've been thinking about that, sifting through the ideas, trying to distinguish between the good and the bad, and figure out where the magic has been disappearing to and what we can do to get it back ever since. I was wrong about a lot of stuff for a long time.

A big part of my thinking was along the lines of rejecting 'selling out' (even before spotify and apple music), and the evils of digital production and compression (especially that which was done badly, which at the time was a lot of it). However, I don't think either of those, or even both together, account for the problem.

Whatever the problem is, is not helped by the medium we work in - imagine Van Gough being rudely interrupted by a felt tip salesman. 'You don't need all that hassle with pigments! Ew, what's that - it stinks! Stop grubbing around in the hedge! Have 1000 felt tips! Imagine what you can do with ONE THOUSAND COLOURS! And it's so convenient - almost no effort required at all! (By the way, I'm selling the same set to everyone on earth who thinks they may be interested in making any sort of picture, for any purpose at all).

MUSIC ≠ CODE.

Stop making code! Or rather, continue to make code as music if you wish, but stop conflating the two. Use the code to record the music... to make a record of it. Make. A. Record.

By extension, you have to have some music to record before you start.

The music doesn't fit in a phone. The phone is merely a window to the music. This needs to be not only understood, but lived. Most music is made to fit in the digital matchbox that is a phone. (Every audio component of a phone was designed and then has evolved for 15yrs for speech clarity. No wonder music sucks).

Ever since 'new sounds' started to come in algorithmic form, what is deemed new/exciting/fashionable is the latest algorithm, creating sounds no-one has heard before. Before music was digital, algorithms came in weird rack mounted black boxes, and before that in organs with lots of knobs and buttons. The Prodigy in the 90s, for example, were the first people to make a record with a Korg M1. Jean-Michel Jarre was waiting for the latest Farfisa organ to make his next record, pre-dating midi. I'm not disrespecting these people - they did good things with the new tools, and rightfully shaped the future. These things have their place, but they aren't everything.

The music shouldn't fit in a phone. The phone, if it has a role at all, is merely a window to the music, the way a tiny transistor radio was back in the day. It didn't have to be explained to anyone that the actual record didn't sound like that.

The problem is also in a lot of musicians’ mindsets, and the assumptions they don't even realise they are making; the presumed substrate that they are building their creative process on, which guarantees a boring end result before one even begins. I hasten to point out this isn't their fault, they have just learned in an environment that is driven by (fiat) monetary/time efficiency and convenience. Even those who reject those things then are swimming against them; they are the current in which we all swim. Staying still then becomes a calculated effort of pushing against the current just the right amount - which takes effort and attention, meaning that effort and attention can't be used elsewhere.

It's all about the people. (Fellow musicians). It's nothing without the people. The very best music is rarely, if ever, a solo endeavor. Even that which appears to come from one person usually has crucial input from others. Brahms had an orchestrator. Most solo acts from last century had a band, or collaborator.

The magic is in the blend of attention, ideas, skill, freedom and trust between a group, enabling a collective flow state rarely achieved in recent times. In my experience, the only way to get there is by trying, and trying at length; therefore, the results being crap for longer than is comfortable is unavoidable. There has to be collective faith that the perseverance will yield some magic - and that comes from the people. In these days of zero privacy, instant playback and short attention, this has become entirely socially unacceptable; and in the minds of those who live in that reality, impossible, or at least unconscionable.

Where I am now

The idea evolved to 'Musicians come to my studio, magic is captured/made, leave with a bunch of code and a hard drive' - so they properly own the finished product, can attach the hard drive to the internet, and the code they could configure however they wish to distribute/monetise/stream/whatever. This was in the days of coloured coins, MAIDSAFE and before transaction fees were a realistic concern, or lightning existed.

Fast forward a few years, and Nostr brings many more possibilities to this, and some version of it needs to be in the world.

What @AaronOfEssex and others are doing using V4V and with @New Music Nudge Unit is the closest thing to the bones of that idea I have yet come across in real life.

Modern version: band has new music. Practice until they can play it. Well. Add any juicy live real time (analogue?) production if they want. Real noises in a real space. My studio can hold an audience of around 20. Come and perform it live to Nostr. That performance is the product. Those musicians actually creating it together in real time, the way a lot of the best music was made.

Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots share the same package ID on StartOS (bitcoind). The registry keys everything off that ID, so as far as it's concerned Knots and Core are the same "package" just different implementations.

The community registry sees your installed bitcoind and offers Knots as an "update"

"View installed" correctly resolves to Bitcoin Core, because that's what's actually running under that package ID

It's the only community-registry service showing green because it's the only one whose package ID matches something you already have installed

Start9 confirmed this explicitly around the 29.1 release: due to a bug in StartOS 0.3.5.1, Knots and Core will both display as having an update available in the "Updates" tab, and they added that they're not trying to trick anyone into switching implementations.

Don't click update. There's a migration guard in place, upgrading from Knots to Core (and vice versa) is prohibited and the install will fail with a migration error. So at worst you'd get a failed install rather than an accidental switch, but it's still worth ignoring the prompt.

Triangulation scams turn an innocent third party into the one who pays for someone else's Bitcoin. Peach shuts it down without asking for your ID.

The play, step by step:
1. The scammer lists something for sale somewhere else entirely. A phone, a concert ticket, furniture on a classifieds site, eBay, Facebook Marketplace. A normal sale, nothing to do with Bitcoin.
2. A buyer (the victim) agrees to buy that item and gets ready to pay.
At that exact moment, the scammer jumps onto a P2P Bitcoin marketplace and takes a trade with a real seller.
3. The scammer passes the seller's bank details to the victim as if those were the scammer's own details for the item being sold.
4. The victim transfers the money to the seller, believing they're paying for a phone.
5. The seller sees the money land, confirms the payment, and releases the Bitcoin to the scammer.
6. The scammer walks away with Bitcoin they never paid for. The victim is out their money and never gets the item. The seller, acting in complete good faith, became the unwitting tool in the middle. Three parties, one of them a total stranger to the deal. That's the triangle.

Why it's hard to catch
From the seller's side, everything looks normal. The right amount of money shows up, on time, for the trade they agreed to. No obvious red flag in the moment.
The only thing that's wrong is who the money came from. The payment is sitting in the seller's account from a person who thinks they just bought a secondhand phone. If the seller has no way to know who the payment was supposed to come from, that mismatch is invisible.

This is where buyer payment details come in and why Peach asks for them.
When you take a trade on Peach as a buyer, you enter the details of the account you're paying from. The seller sees those details in the app. So when the money arrives, the seller has something to check it against: the name and account that actually sent the funds vs. the name and account Peach says should be sending them.

In a normal trade, they match. The buyer paid from their own account, exactly as declared. Trade confirmed, Bitcoin released, everyone happy.
In a triangulation scam, they don't match. The money landed from some random victim's account, not from the buyer named in the trade. That mismatch is the seller's signal.
At that point the seller should NOT* confirm the payment, he should open a dispute. Mediators step in, the Bitcoin goes back to the seller, the money is refunded to the victim, and the scam fails. The trade fails too, but the seller can republish without an extra on-chain transaction.
*there have been cases where the victim complains to the authorities and drags the honest seller into it. You do not want that. Disputing early protects you.

This is the only method we've found to stop third-party payments and triangulation scams without compromising the things that actually matter: no KYC, no surveillance, no handing your identity to anyone. You declare the account you pay from, the seller checks it matches, done. It works on the vast majority of payment methods (cash and a few anonymous methods are handled differently).

Why a payment reference doesn't fix this
Fair question we get a lot: why not just have the seller set a reference/memo and tell buyers to include it? If the payment carries a secret code, surely only the real buyer can pay correctly?
It sounds good, but it doesn't close the hole. The scammer is talking to the victim, so he just forwards the reference along with the bank details: "pay this account, put this code in the reference." The victim dutifully includes it. The payment arrives with a perfect, matching reference, and the seller has no reason to suspect anything. The scammer controls the message, so the scammer controls the reference. It protects nothing.
Checking who sent the money is fundamentally different. The scammer can't forward their own bank identity to the victim. The victim pays from the victim's account, and no reference in the world changes that name. That's why the payment-details check works where a memo doesn't.

When Peach asks for your payment details, it's not a KYC step and we, at Peach, can't see it, except in case of dispute. It's a small, honest piece of information that lets the seller confirm the money came from you, and not from someone who has no idea they're funding a Bitcoin trade. It protects the seller, it protects an innocent stranger, and it keeps the marketplace clean without anyone uploading a passport.

P2P done right means trading directly without giving up your privacy. Stopping triangulation scams is part of doing it right.

The same confusion Rudy exploited is what allows commodity wine to dominate.
A wall of bottles, branded with warmth and tradition, hiding a product built through food science.

The wine world keeps you in the dark. On purpose.

How do you avoid this?

You don’t need a cellar or a huge budget to drink something real.
You just need to get closer to the source.

Shake your winemaker’s hand. Ask questions.
No one worth buying from will make you feel small for wanting to understand.

If they do, they’re part of the act.

Firstly, it's been about-to-be-open-source for what feels like years now.

Secondly, I've not found it reliable - post a larger file, a couple of hours later it won't download, or stay downloaded (it previously was there, but now it's waiting for other peers to be back online before I can access it again).

But the worst thing is, every time I come to use it after a week or two, I can't do anything without a forced upgrade. And I've lost access to using it at all on a few older devices (particularly on iOS) - it forced an upgrade, then never worked again. As a relatively non-technical person, this makes it is hard to trust. (How do I know it is a genuine upgrade? If a bad actor was involved, how do I know I'm not just replacing it with a compromised version? ...or at very least, I can't be sure it'll still work after I upgrade, which means I can't rely on it for anything longer term than just whatever I'm using it for today).

This also means introducing it to other people is problematic - it solves a bunch of communication, privacy and file transfer problems beautifully, but if their experience is usually 'it doesn't work', then it's pretty much a non starter in that context.

I very much hope that my trust in it can be rebuilt, and the technical wrinkles can be ironed out, because it has masses of potential.

Keep a 'normie' phone at home connected to wifi.

Have a graphene phone as my everyday phone with a data-only esim.

When people call or text my normal phone, it will automatically forward the call or text via an app to my graphene phone.
