2026-08-21T16:55:18Z

This is about more than a salary. It’s about planting a seed for the future.

Our The Surfer Kids assistant coaches and Bitcoin Ekasi teaching assistants are still in high school. They are not permanent employees they are young people getting an opportunity to work part-time, earn an income, and learn valuable life skills.

Their salaries are denominated in sats (satoshis). Instead of simply receiving a rand amount, their pay is calculated and paid in sats.

Why do we do this?

Because we want them to experience Bitcoin, not just learn about it.

We want them to understand what it means to earn, save, and think long-term.

If they choose to save some of the sats they earn today, what could those sats mean for them in 5 or 10 years?

We don’t know what the future price of Bitcoin will be.

But we can give young people the opportunity to start saving today and learn the value of thinking about tomorrow.

One sat at a time. One lesson at a time. One future at a time. 🧡🇿🇦

🚨 The South African government is attempting to OUTLAW FINANCIAL FREEDOM.

🚫 Under the guise of "capital flow management," new draft regulations will effectively destroy self-custody and Bitcoin's promise of financial inclusion in our country.

🇿🇦 These aren't just rules for exchanges. They are a direct attack on EVERY South African.

Here’s what they do:

‼️ BAN SELF-CUSTODY: By targeting transactions that touch global network infrastructure, they make self-custody illegal.

‼️ FORCE LIQUIDATION: They grant the state the power to force the sale of Bitcoin to the National Treasury. This is expropriation.

‼️ OUTLAW CIRCULAR ECONOMIES: Peer-to-peer transactions for goods and services will be deemed "black market" activity if they exceed an unspecified threshold.

‼️ GIVE THE STATE ARBITRARY POWER: The Minister can decide the "threshold" for illegality at any time, creating uncertainty for everyone.

✊ This is a war on open, permissionless money. It's a war on the unbanked. It's a war on your right to control your own wealth.

📜 And they're trying to do it WITHOUT A VOTE IN PARLIAMENT.

⏳ The deadline for public objection is either May 18 or June 10, depending on which government source is consulted.

We have no time to waste.

Bitcoin Churches, Bitcoin Factories, and Bitcoin Circular ...

2026-01-28T17:06:36Z

Bitcoin Churches, Bitcoin Factories, and Bitcoin Circular Economies.

There’s a valid concern in the African Bitcoin space voiced by femilonge (nprofile…5yjq) at the recent Africa Bitcoin Conference:

Too many people are building Bitcoin churches, not enough people are building Bitcoin factories.

https://www.youtube.com/live/iXAyxlGcSPo?si=mWZ7jhPnzLX_CdpP&t=2743

In the same vein, there’s a growing suspicion that Bitcoin Circular Economies (BCEs) aren’t factories because it’s not immediately obvious how they scale. Therefore some conclude that BCEs are churches.

Let’s define some terms:

BITCOIN CHURCHES are projects that only preach adoption. Install a wallet, send sats, make one transaction, and walk away. Job done. It looks good on camera, but nothing changes on the ground. It's adoption theatre, as described by Anita 🏳️‍🌈 (nprofile…exa7) .

BITCOIN FACTORIES, by contrast, scale adoption. They build the tools, infrastructure, businesses and networks that make Bitcoin usable for millions.

South Africa offers two excellent examples:

MoneyBadger (nprofile…5m3a) integrated Bitcoin payments into existing merchant POS systems, enabling Lightning payments at 700 000 locations nationwide.

nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7ct5d3shxtnwdaehgu3wd3skuep0qyt8wumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcqyzdjkg74lzn3z2grcnwxqzc2jtzrz7gcln70h54l2kn43ude5nlv5nduu29 (nprofile…uu29) built a Bitcoin financial services provider that works on non-internet-connected feature phones.

So where do BITCOIN CIRCULAR ECONOMIES (BCEs) fit in?

In his recent talk at the Africa Bitcoin Conference in Mauritius, our project founder, Hermann, outlined what BCEs are and why they matter.

https://www.youtube.com/live/nyL9tYp1rnA?si=1LWc70pnZZWuSzia&t=784

Hermann agrees with Femi: we need more factories. We don’t need churches where there’s only talk and no action. And we do need a million different ways for Africans to earn, spend, and save Bitcoin. And that’s precisely why we need BCEs.

FIRST: BECAUSE BCES INSPIRE FACTORY BUILDERS.

MoneyBadger CEO Carel van Wyk is a South African Bitcoin OG. He co-founded Luno (Africa’s oldest operational Bitcoin exchange) and built an on-chain Bitcoin payments solution in 2017. It failed. He subsequently lost interest in Bitcoin as a payment network.

That changed with the Lightning Network and Bitcoin Ekasi. Seeing people actually use Bitcoin in everyday life reignited his drive to build the factory we needed.

Carel (and part of his team) visited Bitcoin Ekasi and personally painted the MoneyBadger logo. Of nearly 50 murals we’ve done he’s the only company CEO to have painted one himself.

That’s not marketing. That’s a real connection. That’s real inspiration turning into action.

Similarly, Kgothatso Ngako, Founder & Catalyst at Machankura, was the first person to get on a plane and visit Bitcoin Ekasi in June 2022, only weeks after Machankura went live. Bitcoin Ekasi provided a real community in which to test features and functionality.

Yes, BCEs today don’t scale adoption to hundreds of thousands, or millions. They’re not factories. At least not yet.

But they are places where factory builders come to be inspired. And, somewhat ironically, one could call that a church.

SECOND: BCEs WILL EVOLVE.

We MUST understand: a BCE is the network of businesses and individuals who use Bitcoin in that community, it is NOT the project that initiated the network.

Today, BCEs are necessarily project-led, and hyper-local, because that’s what works. And many of them are funded through donations that power the flow of sats into their local community. And that’s totally fine, as a start.

But this will change with time. BCE builders must think bigger. And not in terms of numbers. BCE builders should NOT try to onboard and educate 5,000 merchants using existing tools. That would be inefficient and a waste of time.

What this means is the following:

BCEs can (and should) become factories themselves, even if they’re small ones. They should not remain forever completely dependent on outside funding. Instead they should innovate ways for people to earn, spend, and save in Bitcoin.

BCEs should themselves aspire to build tools that can scale Bitcoin. If BCEs can inspire factory builders (like Carel and Kgothatso) then BCEs can also produce factory builders. Even if they don’t meet that high bar, that’s OK, as long as they’re building.

The key question for BCE builders should NOT be:
“How do I raise more funding and get more donations?”

The key questions should be:

“While I’m fundraising and sourcing donations, what am I doing to build for sustainability?”

“Can I innovate new ways for people to earn, spend and save in Bitcoin?”

“Where can I partner with other BCEs and what can I learn from them?”

Ultimately, YOU, the BCE builder that initiated this project that sustains the early stages of the BCE in your community, should be building for sustainability.

You should be building a BCE that benefits from, but is ultimately not entirely dependent on your input.

Most people think resistance looks loud. It doesn’t 🤫

Systems don’t collapse because people fight them. They collapse because people stop needing them.

Using Bitcoin day to day isn’t a protest or rebellion, it’s opting out of a rigged game while living your life.

No permission needed to save 💰
No permission needed to trade 🔁
No permission needed to coordinate 🌍

One Bitcoin coffee means nothing ☕️ Thousands doing it quietly makes control fragile. Real change doesn’t overthrow power, it makes it irrelevant🧱➡️🌱

At our thrift store, community members 'buy' donated clothes using Bitcoin, but nothing is priced higher than 200 sats, and nothing is pricedin fiat.

For the past three months jasonb (nprofile…nr75) and his family volunteered with us.

They came all the way from Ohio, USA, to join our work in Mossel Bay, South Africa, and saw up close both the challenges and the progress happening in our community.

They supported our youth programs on a daily basis, helping kids build real skills through Bitcoin-based financial education and related projects.

They also spent time with local merchants and witnessed how circulating hard money is strengthening small businesses in the township.

Their observations reinforced what we see every day: consistent, grassroots work creates meaningful change.

We highly appreciate their time, effort, and the perspective they brought to our project.

Thank you Jason and family!!!

And a remarkable improvement from 2024, with an overall time difference of 59min faster in 2025 and 156th place overall, vs. 638th place in 2024.

We're very fortunate to have him on our team as a senior coach and lifesaving instructor, he's inspiration to the kids! Excited to see where this journey takes him! No doubt he'll go much further!

2025-10-30T19:48:36Z

When we first started painting shacks, everything was built on trust and community spirit. 🎨✨

But after a tough lesson around payments and cleanliness, we realized that for our project to grow stronger, we needed structure and accountability.

Now, every painted shack owner signs a simple contractual agreement:

✅ Keep their area clean
✅ Visit the Bitcoin Ekasi Center once a month
✅ Learn about Bitcoin and the purpose behind our movement 🧡

Each owner earns 7,000 sats per week (up to 28,000 sats/month) based on completing their learning visit, and trash collection, because this project isn’t just about payments. It’s about empowerment, education, and building a stronger community together.

All contracts were signed with the support of local ward councillor Mr. Buda and LuthandoSABTC🇿🇦 (nprofile…srel) , our project community leader.

This is a big step toward transparency, growth, and shared progress!

Belief in a higher power (and or a higher purpose) is entirely logical. Doesn't have to religious, but must be something bigger than the individual. Something beyond ones own grasp. With it, life makes sense. Without it, life doesn't make sense. And in its absence, without fail, the result is despair. The logical choice is to adopt it.
