Australian foreign policy has always had a remarkable appreciation for strength.
Observe its historically warm relationship with Israel. Canberra understands the vocabulary of deterrence, sovereignty, strategic interests and military capability perfectly well.
Apparently, respect is not a foreign language after all.
For decades, however, India's greatest strategic contribution to Australia was apparently its ability to supply engineers, doctors, students and IT professionals.
Preferably qualified, economically productive and sufficiently grateful.
Then something inconvenient happened.
The Indian Ocean remembered India.
The elephant began to stand up.
Not in anger. Not in haste. Certainly not seeking anybody's permission.
Just an ancient civilisation rediscovering the rather unfashionable idea that it might have interests of its own.
Suddenly, the Australian diplomatic vocabulary began evolving.
"Labour supply" became "strategic partnership."
"Emerging market" became "Indo-Pacific power."
And the people once assessed through visa subclasses became citizens of a country whose strategic judgment could no longer be casually dismissed.
A remarkable linguistic transformation.
Don't worry, Canberra.
The elephant will be exceedingly gentle with your egos.
It has no particular interest in trampling the furniture, frightening the servants or interrupting the ceremonial speeches about the rules-based international order.
It understands that the psychological transition from imperial familiarity to genuine equality can be quite traumatic.
There will be no need for humiliation.
Perhaps just a slightly larger chair at the negotiating table.
And a quiet reminder:
Courtesy was never submission. Patience was never weakness. And hospitality was never ownership.
The elephant knows its strength.
It also knows how fragile imperial porcelain can be.
Walk gently. Carry civilisation. Let the egos adjust.

For the longesr of time i had the USGI 3day assault pack, the OG mk1 where every part was replaceable. After it was stolen, i baghopped for about a decade until i settled for a Direct Action Dust mk2. It's really hard to find quality stuff, seems even the military gear is prone to planed obsolescence now. But i'm happy with this one. 6 years in and not a seam ia broken.
For longer hikes i have a helicon racoon ripoff: much bigger but also much better seams and sturdier fabric. It doesn't have a brand name and i got it by pure chance so i can't point you to any shop.
