i agree! my coding agent does not need to know how to bake bread. i’m hopeful we’ll see more development in purpose built software engineering technology. i suppose the system one models fall into this category as one example of a fairly constrained-purpose tool. but there’s gotta be so much more to discover.
i love this discussion. our viewpoints are so different at this stage of the game. and id be willing to bet a few years ago they were quite similar.
our industry is evolving rapidly. what an exciting time to be building software.
imagine a skyscraper builder. somewhere is the big brained, credentialed architect.
if they have their crew build the walls, the doors, the hallways, as lowly trades workers, is that deceptive or problematic?
shall the architect drive every nail by their own hand?
the product is what the end users get. they don’t care if a function implementation is dogshit, so long as the product does what it says on the tin. i use ai like i used to leverage jr programmers: implement this interface/domain/etc. i dont care about the impl behind those interfaces much. if it works and is tested, great. we can optimize or rewrite the impl later, if and when it’s necessary (it’s often not).
ai is a tool. ive spent hundreds of hours at this point learning how to use it. it’s constantly evolving. but garbage in, garbage out.
i too am paid to build software as a professional. in my world, the economics are such that the cost of software is trending down.
that’s going to look awesome
they want that high dopamine hit. it’s like a slot machine where every post has the potential to go viral. the algos really gamify it.
nostr doesnt have that mechanic because it doesn’t have the algo or audience.
thank god.
more power to you i guess. it sounds like you do contract work with an add on retainer for maintenance? do you bid projects accounting for that hand chiseling?
more often than not, the best code you write is the code that was never written. more directly, the hard part of software is building the right thing. most things we build are obsolete and never reach product market fit. therefore i claim that it’s better to just have ai write the mvp, instantly. have ai iterate on it as you navigate the market fit. the edge real software engineers have is giving the ai constraints. but the implementation literally does not matter and i firmly stand by that. mean time to remediation is what matters, and again ai accelerates this. these are my opinions and a decade ago my opinions were arguing semantics, code is craft, etc. my opinions have changed. new shit has come to light. i dont hand chisel code anymore. good on you if you wish to keep up the hobby, i look back on it fondly.
i have angered the trad coders

ai fixes dependency hell. by removing the dependencies.

in a prior life i worked as an audio engineer on post. these remind me of the little genelecs. what a cool idea!

it’s an incredible new tool.
i can tell you that i dont ever “take” a poop.
I love how you incorporate natural features into your building.
will you kick off an autowork session to have the agents describe the high level architecture of this system and end to end flows? i think its be a fun read. bonus points if you include a real example of it building something and how it flows thru the factory
what stack are you building this in?

dump samples in a folder and tell claude to create a writing style skill based on it
that sucks, sorry to hear that
i asked gemini but it’s completely worthless
@nprofile…jejf say a guy wanted a pair of sparks - any recommendations on model and best place to buy?
howd you do it? reminds me of that oss c++ clone of minecraft- did you point claude at an existing project, or prompt from scratch? curious your process
i primarily focus on architecture and interfaces and tell the agents what to do. i read the code only on existing systems that are important, otherwise i quickly scan it for structure, at most.
agreed. can’t beat the beauty of wood.
sande plywood walls going up. went with these over birch because i had planned to paint… but kind of liking the full wood vibe. might just seal ‘em.

15 years as a fulltime software dev
ive not written a line of code by hand this year
im not ready for the dark but sure am excited for some crisp air
🔥🔥🔥
rally racing is a pretty dope rabbithole if you haven’t looked before. the whole co-driver protocol is really fun and who doesn’t love drifting. dirt rally 2 is an excellent sim game.
holy shit dude that’s legit!! gonna be amazing.
whatd you settle on for a wheel/etc?
