It isn't the npub, it is the client they are using.
There is a fairly big kerfuffle going on with clients choosing to not render kind-1111 notes. This is why it seems dead. Primal and Damus are the biggest offenders. Primal, because the devs are idiots, Damus because Will is too stubborn for his own good and doesn't see the point even though literally everyone else does.
It's very silly at this point. (I'm on the side of replies being classified as kind-1111 notes strive it creates a very simple and easy to use structure for notes that is, in fact, easier to render correctly if used.)
