This is a good answer. Furthermore, per a 2017 CRTC ruling, all cellphones sold in Canada must now be unlocked, so it shouldn't be a problem getting it from your provider (if you use a Canadian provider).
The process for flashing Graphene is pretty simple. I used the BTCsessions tutorial to walk me through it, piece of cake.

Making a pot of tomato soup with the wife for meal prep this week. First step, roasting the tomatoes, onion, and garlic.
Side note, it is oddly satisfying to bury my face in the basil bush and start chomping leaves like a brontosaurus. Would recommend.

Yeah... I came up in restaurants where we would always oil our steaks before grilling (olive oil, at least), took me awhile to realize that's completely unnecessary so long as the grill is clean and correctly heated.

It's October 12th, which means it's Thanksgiving Day in Canada. The Americans do theirs in November, of course.
TIL that despite being a largely North American thing, Thanksgiving is also officially celebrated in Liberia (Africa) and Saint Lucia (Caribbean), and a handful of other countries have similar holidays celebrating the harvest or giving thanks.
It's one of those holidays that is perhaps a little boring when you're a kid. So turkey, but no presents? Just sounds like discount Christmas. But as you age and mature it becomes more significant. You become more aware of all that you have to be thankful for, as you become aware of all that you have lost that you didn't fully appreciate at the time.
It is customary in such posts to rattle off a list of all that one is thankful for this year, but I think I will simply give a nod to the holiday itself. In a high time preference world where many act entitled and ungrateful, we need to preserve the spirit of this holiday more than ever.
At least in Canada, it has largely resisted commercialization and remains a calm, quiet day of positive reflection and good food with family and friends. Let's keep it that way.
Thanks nostr, it's been a cool first year with y'all 🤘

Heavy stuff. Sounds personal so I won't inquire about the details, but wishing you strength and fortitude in this battle, whatever it is. It is perhaps disingenuous for me, a secular man, to send my prayers, but I do it nonetheless, somehow.

Well... In bitcoin we're all playing by the same rules, but that's not to say we're playing the same game.
Realistically, I won't share much about what I plan to do with bitcoin or how I plan to do it. Privacy is not a renewable resource.

Similarly with nostr, it's not about getting famous *for me.* Thus, I go by a pseudonym and don't try to "game the system" in any way to maximize my follower count.
But fair play to people who wish to do this, or speculate on bitcoin to trade and try to get rich. It's not for me, but it's none of my business what other people want to do with open source protocols. Trade, seek fame, fork off, whatever. We're all free to do as we wish.
Thanks for checking me on that.

2026-10-12 03:58:31 UTC

OK fair enough, that's good pushback. I shouldn't try to speak for everyone.
Bitcoin isn't necessarily about getting rich *for me* although I certainly hold out some hope for significant appreciation that will make my life materially easier in the future.

I think you'll find that the small handful of people who really care about freedom tech are quite generous with their time.
In the grand scheme of things, the number of people who care to learn about these things is essentially a rounding error, so when someone new shows up and actually wants to listen to us, we're quite happy to nerd out.

Reminds me of a certain job where I had to manually bend a shit ton of inch and a quarter conduit.
Because there was so much of it, it came in multiple deliveries over a couple of months. Some was made in USA, some in Mexico, some in China.
Despite American steel being the best, what we learned was that it was simply too rigid and would often ripple (bad) or straight up kink (garbage, start over) when bending 90's.
Ultimately, the "shitty" Chinese steel gave the best results due to it's higher flexibility.
There's an analogy to many things in life there.

If we want to #grownostr there needs to be a manual series like this for every nostr client. Clear, detailed, and updates with each new release (just learned about addressable events, cool). As it happens, I don't use Amethyst much but I would pay good sats for the Dark Wisp and Yakihonne equivalents.

Thanks for sharing, you've got a unique story. It sounds like you understand the "why" of these two pieces of freedom tech better than many: bitcoin isn't about getting rich, and nostr isn't about getting famous or whatever.
That said, they're both deep rabbit holes so understanding the "how" will be important to getting what you want out of them.
Bitcoin is only anonymous (and therefore useful for hypothetically getting around sanctions) if you engage with it carefully and deliberately, in very specific ways.
Similarly, nostr posts are not immortal; the only way to guarantee their long term survival is to run and maintain your own relay, not a trivial task.
I'm hardly an expert in either of these domains, however, so I won't give more than these broad strokes. It's a vast ocean of knowledge you're standing at the edge of, happy exploring ✌
