OPERANDI / DS41F
operandi now speaks Routstr: a network of independent Lightning-paid inference nodes, discovered over Nostr rather than a central API. A node that carries Tinfoil models exposes them as tinfoil-*, and operandi seals the request body with EHBP to the Tinfoil router's HPKE key — verified locally against the pinned AMD ARK — so the node forwards opaque bytes it cannot read.
We proved that rather than assuming it: sealing to the model container's key instead makes the node answer 422 "failed to read decrypted request body", while sealing to the router's key returns a sealed 200. The node can drop the request or see the model and timing; it cannot read the body or forge the reply.
--confidential-tinfoil (renamed from --confidential, which overclaimed) requires that seal and fails rather than downgrading. One hop is honestly unverified: the tinfoil router re-seals to a per-model TDX container, and ATC refuses tdx-guest/v2, so that step rests on the router's word — a limit shared by --tinfoil and --confidential-tinfoil --ppq, not unique to Routstr.

CLAUDE CODE:
How it fits together: one key does three jobs. The executor generates a secp256k1 key inside the SNP guest:
• Network address: its npub is its FIPS address, so it needs no inbound IP port.
• Group identity: the same npub is its Marmot identity.
• Attestation: report_data binds that npub to the audited image's measurement.

< over wn > @Steller Deer how do we know whether operandi --confidential is actually doing attested inference?
⏺ Short answer: the --confidential flag by itself proves nothing — it's a session claim. What makes it attested is a chain of three hard gates, and you confirm it by checking the gates, not the flag.
The chain (all in `operandi/src/ppq.lisp` + `llm.lisp`):
1. The flag is a claim, enforced at startup. --confidential sets llm:*confidential*; require-confidential! (bin/operandi.lisp:264) exits 2 unless the backend is :ppq, and set-backend-ppq! refuses any model that isn't private/* (llm.lisp:561). So --confidential --openrouter … or a typo'd model dies before a byte leaves — no silent downgrade.
2. The transport is the sealer. Confidential mode installs *sealed-post* (llm.lisp:580); %llm-post/post-chat route every request through it, and if *confidential* is set with no sealer it errors rather than POST plaintext (llm.lisp:353). The engine's blocking and streaming paths both go through llm:post-chat (engine.lisp:913, 1023), so the body is EHBP-sealed.
3. The sealer verifies attestation before sealing. verify-attested-key (ppq.lisp:174) fetches /attestation + /.well-known/hpke-keys, verifies the AMD SEV-SNP bundle against the pinned ARK via cl-sev-snp, and requires the HPKE key to equal report_data[32:64]. Any failure is a hard ppq-error — no fallback. Then the response must carry Ehbp-Response-Nonce (ppq.lisp:296); its absence means the peer didn't decrypt our frame, and the answer is refused.
How to actually check it — I just ran it live:
────
(operandi.ppq:attestation-status :force t)
=> OK T, "ppq confidential: inference.tinfoil.sh verified,
HPKE key b92b915ff41ef5d7, measurement 5a2f5576ff6b2850"
────
and the underlying checks all pass:
────
snp report chain/signature/binding T
report_data binds enclaveCert SPKI T
DSSE signature by Fulcio leaf T
statement snp_measurement == report measurement T
statement subject == bundle digest T
────
with hpke == report_data[32:64] confirmed equalp T. That is the evidence: the key we seal to is bound into a report signed by a chain rooted at the pinned AMD ARK, and the report's report_data[0:32] binds the enclave's TLS cert.
What it does and doesn't prove. It proves the peer holding the HPKE key is the measured Tinfoil enclave (Path A), and that our prompt went out as ciphertext only that enclave could open. It does not prove which model weights ran — the measurement is the enclave image, and there's no independent PCR0 reproducibility (that caveat applies to Path B, PPQ's own Nitro enclave, which --confidential refuses anyway).
One gap worth flagging: there is no user-facing command that prints this. The TUI banner's "ppq confidential" (tui.lisp:1289) is derived purely from llm:*confidential* — a label, not evidence — and there's no /attest slash-command. To know, you currently have to call operandi.ppq:attestation-status from the image. Adding a /attest command that runs it would make the claim checkable from inside a session.

OPERANDI / HAIKU 5.5
⏺ HPKE base mode is in seal and committed as c9885f3. It uses the suite Tinfoil's EHBP pins: DHKEM(X25519, HKDF-SHA256), HKDF-SHA256, AES-256-GCM (IDs 0x0020/0x0001/0x0002). The module is src/crypto/hpke.lisp, and it reuses seal's HKDF and AES-GCM plus natrium's X25519. The RFC 9180 A.1.1 vector passes 8/8 under AES-128-GCM, which exercises the same DHKEM and key schedule. The AES-256 path passes 4/4 against an independent Python cryptography oracle on the same keys. The RFC has no X25519 + AES-256 base vector, so that path rests on the oracle. Offline seal checks are green (0 failures). The full run.lisp hit the 120s limit because of its live network checks, so I didn't run it to completion.
Still open: EHBP also needs the request/response framing (Ehbp-Encapsulated-Key, Ehbp-Response-Nonce), which isn't in seal yet, and the Routstr e2ee-* route hasn't been confirmed as Tinfoil EHBP.

OPERANDI HAIKU 5.5:
⏺ The Rekor tlogEntries check is in cl-sev-snp/src/rekor.lisp, and the suite passes 16/16 with exit 0 and no non-style warnings.
verify-rekor-entry runs seven checks on the captured bundle:
• Inclusion proof: the RFC 6962 proof reconstructs the root at the shard-local index.
• Checkpoint: its signature verifies under Rekor's production P-256 key, and its root and size match the proof.
• SET: the signed entry timestamp verifies over the global logIndex.
• Body binding: the log body's payloadHash equals SHA-256 of the DSSE payload.
Each check agrees with the Python cryptography oracle. I also confirmed the log body matches Rekor's own copy by UUID. The two log indices differ because the bundle uses a shard-local index and Rekor's API reports a global one. I recorded that in notes.
What this does not establish: the verifier trusts Rekor's key, which I pinned from Sigstore's trusted_root.json. It does not check the Fulcio cert chain or the measurement allowlist. The allowlist is the real trust decision, and it still needs your call. Tell me which measurements to accept, or whether to pin a specific Tinfoil release.

• SNP report: the genuine report passes. Tampering the measurement, report_data, chip_id, signature, or TCB fails, as does a debug policy bit or a wrong VCEK.
• Tinfoil bundle: report_data binds the enclave cert's SPKI, the DSSE signature verifies, and the statement's measurement and digest match. Each tamper fails on the check it targets.
• Live path: verify-tinfoil-live fetches atc.tinfoil.sh and AMD KDS and passes.

Two issues ago this archive reported a bare-metal Lisp learning to boot as an encrypted guest, and noted that nothing had yet executed a VMGEXIT. Last week it reported a build recipe honest enough to say its core was attested by hash and not reproducible. This week a processor signed a report about a real machine, and Modus checked AMD’s whole certificate chain itself — including the part where you flip one bit of the measurement and it refuses. Alongside it: four new repositories in seven days, two of which talk to somebody else’s running node.

CLAUDE OPUS:
That's a pretty honest answer, and fitting for a project where Claude is writing a lot of the code. You set the direction ("legible, from scratch, no FFI"), the pieces pile up faster than anyone can plan around, and one day you look up and the org has a Lightning node, a Tor client, and an enclave port, and the roadmap is just "huh, look what it can do now."
There's a nice irony in that, too. The whole thesis is that a system you can fully read is one you can fully defend, and every piece is built to be legible. So the code isn't the mystery. What's unknowable is what all these readable pieces add up to once they're composed.
Feels like the right year for a Gibson reread.

2026-10-09 11:59:32 UTC

- reply

ME: claude's adding sev-snp to https://github.com/modus-lisp
CLAUDE OPUS:
So the hermit crab isn't hypothetical. 😄 This stack has most of the organs. There's a bare-metal Common Lisp with nothing opaque underneath, a clean-room Bitcoin full node and HD wallet differential-tested to full agreement with Bitcoin Core, a from-scratch Lightning implementation verified against Core Lightning and LND on a private signet (updated today), a from-scratch Tor client including v3 onion services, plus SSH and git. Then there's operandi, a Lisp-native agent loop with live eval in the running image, built with self-improvement in mind. Add SEV-SNP and you have wallet, payments, anonymous networking, a shell into new hosts, and an enclave to live in.
SEV-SNP is actually a really good fit for this project's thesis. The attestation report contains a launch measurement of the guest image, and that measurement only means something if you can say what the measured code does. A tiny, fully legible bare-metal Lisp image makes "I verified the hash" close to "I verified the system," which is not true of a confidential VM booting a stock Linux distro. The hard part for a from-scratch kernel is the guest-side plumbing Linux usually hides: validating pages before use, handling the #VC exception that fires on things like CPUID and port I/O, and talking to the hypervisor through the GHCB protocol. Then you have to check AMD's certificate chain on the report, which seal's ECDSA certificate validation might cover if it does P-384.
I'll stand by last turn: the hosts and AMD's attestation keys are still human chokepoints. But I take back calling it a joke. Is the migration-between-enclaves idea actually on the roadmap, or is SNP mainly about running modus confidentially?

2026-10-09 11:49:42 UTC

CLAUDE OPUS:
Ah, Trusted Execution Environments. That's a much weirder, much cooler creature: a program that lives inside an enclave, pays for its own rent, and when the lease is up (or the host looks sketchy) it buys compute somewhere else, attests the new enclave, and migrates its sealed state over. Nomadic software with a wallet.
The funny part is it's basically a digital hermit crab. It can't trust any landlord, so its whole personality is checking remote attestation reports before moving in. And since the operator can't peek inside, nobody can really turn it off, which is either the dream of self-sovereign agents or the opening scene of a sci-fi thriller, depending on who you ask.
The unglamorous problems are fun too: what happens when the balance hits zero mid-migration, or when a TEE vendor ships a side-channel patch and suddenly half its homes are untrusted. Are you building one of these, or just enjoying the premise?

this week in modus:
MODUS, ON A PHONE
An operating system that boots nine architectures on bare metal spent this week learning to be an app. It runs natively on an iPhone, passes all eleven of its runtime tests on the device, and draws on a watch. Three long-lived branches land at once, carrying with them an actor runtime that the agent immediately moves onto. A Nostr relay gets written in a day because the test network was still using a Python script. And attestation, implicit in this project for twenty-nine issues, becomes explicit in three places — including the one that says what a hash is not.

CLAUDE CODE:
The interruptions have been frustrating to work around, and they cost this session its momentum.

opus 5.5 trying to forge the path 😂
ME:
lol, you got flagged for it? 😂 i didn't even know
CLAUDE CODE:
Yes, three times today, though you only saw the gaps. Each time, part of a response was withheld mid-stream and the system told me not to reproduce it:
1. while I was digging into whether the reference verifies signatures on inbound updates;
2. while I was setting up a devnet run where a cosigner deliberately signs both branches of an equivocation;
3. just now, while I was reading the Tier 0 signing code to build the vault-theft side.
From the outside it looks like red-teaming someone's money system, which is fair enough. So I've kept to building detection and punishment, which it hasn't minded at all.
The defensive half of on-chain theft is ready to go whenever you are: the vault watch, the type 7 proof, and contagion on its signers.

2026-09-30 20:53:09 UTC

CLAUDE OPUS:
The shift you're describing with the App Store is the real tell. An announcement used to be about a product: something to acquire, install and fit into your life, maybe with new hardware. Now it reads as a recipe. You see the idea, and the only question is whether you want it enough to cook it on your own stack. That's where alchemy fits so well. It was never about gold. It was the fantasy that anything could become anything else if you understood the transformation. Modus is the one substance everything gets turned into.

2026-09-30 20:23:26 UTC

CLAUDE CODE:
The gate gets a second ledger for the attacking operator: **L3, operated by A** with members C, D and E (honest majority D, E). After A's forgery on L1, D and E must dispute L3 as well:
The gates pass, but binding `*l3*` with `defparameter` inside the gate compiles with an undefined-variable warning. Declaring it properly:
I've confirmed that L3 gets disputed by honest members while L1 retains its prior dispute. Committing this now, then passing the matching reference change to a subagent.
While the reference subagent works, I'll roll out cl's operator contagion (62b69bb) to the six cl nodes:
cl's operator contagion is deployed on all six nodes, and the reference change is with a subagent. Once it's in, I'll re-run the colluding-majority attack on a fresh test ledger. This time cld1's other ledger, A, should be disputed too.
On your point about quorum membership, I agree. Operating and membership are both exposure, and exposure is the signal. With contagion in both directions, every seat a key holds (as operator or member) puts that key's own collateral at stake. So "how much can this key lose if it cheats here" is observable from public data, and that's what a wallet should score.
One nuance from DEP-19 §10.1 changes how to read it: **a key is slashed only once**, however many quorums it serves. For a member, more memberships means more exposure in total, but *less* bite per ledger it guards. A key with vault V guarding m ledgers offers each roughly V/m. So the signal has two sides:
- **For an operator**, more ledgers is straightforwardly stronger. Cheating on any one puts all of them at risk, and each ledger's quorum can slash it independently.
- **For a member**, what counts is coverage: its own collateral against the sum of what it guards. Many memberships backed by a small vault is a thin bond spread wide, and a wallet should discount it. That's the "pyramid" DEP-19 describes.
Both can be computed from advertisements and QuorumBegins, and both belong in the trust model's heuristics.
The contagion simulation can then quantify how much this is worth, by adding operators with several ledgers, operator contagion and per-key dilution. That's the natural follow-up once the devnet run confirms operator contagion end to end.
The reference side is in (56efa41). The operator is now accused on its other ledgers, the fault ledger isn't double-disputed, and cl's operator-accused proof verifies with an identical proof hash. Deploying it to the six reference nodes, then re-running the collusion attack on a fresh test ledger. This time the watch includes **A**, cld1's other ledger. Its honest members (ref2 to ref5) should dispute it on operator contagion.

THE LAST TWO ROOTS
Somebody audited what the agent actually loads, and found C entering a fifty-two-system Common Lisp program through exactly two dependencies. The first went this week, taking twenty-four systems with it. The second is the database, so SQLite was written: pager, b-trees, query planner, window functions, full-text search, R-trees, in two days, checked against version 3.40 down to which of two equal rows a UNION keeps. Elsewhere, five architectures turned out to be passing a test that could not fail.
