I'm not an expert on cell cycle stuff, and especially not in humans but my general understanding is that whatever the state the cell might be in to trigger telomere maintenance, it subsequently triggers a DNA integrity check and a "decision" as to what to do thereafter, like damage response and cell fate. Telomere maintenance is complicated machinery composed of many different proteins and functional RNAs, including telomerase, which interacts with a number of pathways to regulate itself. I just wouldn't know if your hypothesis is reasonable.

Great career move. I personally find it gratifying. Aging is a fascinating field of research, so much that we just don't know and maybe can't know. I had some colleagues in an adjacent lab a while back working on aging. They were trying to understand how telomerase depletion, which basically leads to faster aging, was being caused. It wasn't obvious from genomic studies so they were looking at phases downstream. Could also be due to a breakdown somewhere else entirely that cascades down to telomerase translation.

I study genomics and evolution of symbiotic relationships, mostly in microbes.

In nature there is no notion of joining forces to make something "better" or more complex. There's no plan at the outset to build an animal, only endless incremental tinkering and change.
There's plenty of well-studied cases of specialization in behavior of bacteria when, for example, they hit quorum and you start to see some emergent macro properties. I don't see why there couldn't be more complex extensions of that behavior. No multicellularity required there.

Basically as silly as any claim of AGI in the current AI paradigm.

I have an allergic reaction to them now that they're part of AI vernacular. Makes me think of the Vonnegut quote about semicolons; just use a period instead because it's almost always more appropriate.

The bulk of basic science is actually good science being done by genuine people with the noble desire to learn more about the world. The pseudo science and the highly politicized subjects get most of the public attention, unfortunately.

This is a really tough problem to solve. Getting research into the public's hands isn't very difficult because you can just put pre-prints into biorxiv or medrxiv. Doesn't really matter what the content is as long as it follows the formatting guideline. I think the bigger problem with those platforms is the limited functionality to interact with the content. It's basically no different from just reading printed paper.
What currently gives the research weight is the peer review process and the "scarcity" perception of the publishing outlet. Peer review is already highly skilled unpaid work because journals maintain their monopoly over the process, and the journals themselves manufacture scarcity by publishing only what they think brings them more money. By extension, funding typically goes to researchers that publish in those artificially scarce journals. That creates a lot of intertia in the system.

@nprofile…uffm I'm playing around with sendPrivateMsg in nostr-sdk-js thinking it behaves like the Python counterpart where I can give rumor_extra_tags but there isn't an equivalent option. Is that on purpose or maybe it's not built yet?
