YODL

Created an account an hour ago and did one puzzle so far. I learned young, never formally, and have played almost no games since high school.
I aight. For some reason X thinks I like puzzles, and feeds me a ton lately. I feel smarter about the game just looking at it these days, and have an urge to play growing

I got some longer tables of all 3-word scores using up to 15 letters, under each system of scoring (original, doubling, and advantage), to long to include easily.
My chat seems to agree that advantage is good balance for rewarding longer words, and here's some 2-word comparisons:

You're a better man than I. I resort mostly to shouting into the wind and complaining to the occasional dev via a note.

2026-10-13 17:30:10 UTC

Tag a dev for whatever client you're having an issue with, and they often have at least a quick look. It's definitely frustrating no matter what, to try and fully diagnose the issue, since you have to check all clients, sometimes the behavior magically changes after someone interacts with the problematic post, etc.

Doesn't cover the homology thing, but complexes is covered quickly. He has subsequent videos that go deeper, but this much is cool to learn about, if no other reason than knowing it's the mathematically precise way to frame the subject sheds a lot of insight imo

It's fascinating. I don't know enough to say what is worth looking up specifically, but the progression I saw was simplicity complexes defines as N points in R^N, that are linearly independent, form a N-1 dimensional "pyramid" that has nice properties. You can glue them together into complexes and prove some stuff about them, minor things like unique representation of points "inside" them, with so called barycentric coordinates, etc.
then you can generalize to abstract complexes as just a formal graph of points and show those can be embedded as above. From there you can define "orientation" and a mapping of one dimension to a lower one, and finally a quotient group that captures the properties of "holes and twists" in the complex, the holography groups.
From there I believe you can show you don't need to approximate with "pyramids" at all... and then there's more stuff from there like cohomology that I didn't get to, and more...

Yeah, it's aight. I'm kinda into polyhedra recently, after reading some math stuff about them a few weeks ago, lol. Turns out you can define a group structure on a topological space by approximating it as a simplex (structure of glueing polyhedra together) and introducing a concept of "orientation" and a mapping from higher dimensions to the borders of the polyhedra, called the homology groups.

What if hitting a 7 or more letter word, returned some new letters to play with, upping the 25 max letters in play by some portion of those that would normally get x'd out? Not really aesthetic, but trying to think outside the scoring-scale box here.

2026-10-12 23:34:43 UTC

- reply

Yeah, I got it to accept "bitch" other day, so seemed a solid list.
I like adding fast play best of scoring a lot.
I think the scoring is elegant, but should reward longer words a bit more. A 7-3 is worth 31 point, while a 5-5 is worth 30, feels wrong to me.

2026-10-12 20:10:41 UTC

I tried a few combos and they all faired about the same score, give or take. Not even sure this was my highest one, but figured 10 minutes was long enough to spend on it. Don't really have a strategy, other than looking for long words, and try not to clog up options with early word submissions. 🤷‍♀️
