I may need to unfollow the postmarketOS hashtag due to a weird flood of negative doom posting about it not being ready to fully replace Android yet. I know people are worried about Android locking down app development and such, but don't take that out on one of the few projects trying to remove Google and Apple's dualopoly :( Complaining can't make development faster.

English is amazing. I love how regular its possessive form is with using _'s_. Like how the contraction of "it is" is "it's" and to indicate possession with "it" is "its". English is amazing.

@nprofile…8d0p You're right. I'm sorry that I assumed that was a jab at some projects I work with. Usually people use that as the first thing they critique us for and there's been an uptick of that recently. Seeing a major project use that argument rubbed me the wrong way.

@nprofile…8d0p I can see where they are coming from, but the way they presented it isn't very constructive. But, I also feel like the way this account presents itself creates room for bad actors to grab at mistakes and twist the wording. For example, this whole thread started from a regular news account posting hashtags that they like. Then, when someone asked where GrapheneOS was, they responded saying they were open to changing it. Your response was to bring systemd into the matter.

@nprofile…8d0p Woah, their posts are really shitty. I honestly think that the best option would be to just not respond to them. I get trolls on my posts all the time, some of them even saying that my work is useless or making up things about postmarketOS that aren't true. If I clapped back at all of them I would probably be a lot sadder.
I just want you to know that postmarketOS has very strict rules on harassment and people that bring that kind of energy into our spaces are usually instabanned.

@nprofile…8d0p GrapheneOS is a Linux distribution though? If Android is considered a form of Linux, then GrapheneOS would be a distribution thereof. I know there are some Android projects that don't like being called a Linux distribution, but, if GrapheneOS considers itself one, then who am I to say it isn't?
Also, on the attacks thing. Every time I ever respond to anything to do with GrapheneOS, even if it isn't a debate, I get hit with that. Why? What have I done to deserve that?

@nprofile…8d0p I never said that Android is *not* Linux, I said its up to interpretation whether it is, as with all things. For example, the Wikipedia page on Mobile Linux includes Android (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_mobile_devices), but, if you look up "Mobile Linux", the results are for non-Android distributions because its just a category that people use when it makes sense. It was probably popularized by Pine64, you are right, but that's like saying people using "coke" instead of "soda" makes them wrong.

@nprofile…8d0p This is like arguing if a hotdog is a sandwich. Sure, its meat between two halves of bread, but some people might not see it as a sandwich, and some do. This is the same with Android. It has all the pieces to be a Linux distro, but whether it is is up to interpretation. Is it the userspace (the bun), the kernel (the meat), or something else that makes it a distro (a sandwich)? Or is it how its presented? In the end it doesn't matter, because both are good in their own right

@nprofile…8d0p I know that it doesn't require the explicit Android fork of the kernel, but every corporate vendor uses it as a base, so in the public consciousness, Android uses a fork of the Linux kernel. My point wasn't semantic, but categorical. If the public categorizes Android different from other Linux kernel-using operating systems, then Android is not Linux. This is the same with Darwin, which is technically a BSD-like, but it is not regularly lumped in with FreeBSD and the family.

- reply

@nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…c8pt @nprofile…dey5
I think you do have a point here. Android is Linux, and that isn't even an argument. The Android kernel, while being a fork, is still functionally just the Linux kernel. But, like all things, humans categorize, and "Mobile Linux" or "Linux Phones" is just a category that mostly includes distributions attempting to use close-to-mainline Linux kernels.
"systemd phones" wouldn't work either, because postmarketOS for example supports OpenRC.

@nprofile…4zr8 Two things can be true at once. gen-AI can be horrible for the environment and labor and a threat to artistic creation while also being a force for good in some people's lives. This doesn't mean that gen-AI is a solution, but instead means that the problem got so bad that even the bare minimum becomes a balm. It is absolutely an indictment of the open-source ecosystem's total ignorance towards accessibility issues.

@nprofile…d73q Oh, I could probably say "I'm more used to [program that does the same thing but is FOSS]. Most of my professors have nearly no idea how computers work. If I said it runs Linux, they'd probably ask if I could install Windows to make it work.

2026-06-17 09:36:52 UTC

@nprofile…d73q Because most students at my Uni have an M-series Mac, so professors just give up and figure out alternative software. Its much better that they assume I'm using a Mac than believe I am "hindering myself" by using Linux.

2026-06-17 07:20:23 UTC

I think the saddest part of the LLM infection of open-source software development is the loss of trust in each other. Beforehand, if somebody submitted some bad code, it could be assumed it was either a mistake or they weren't well-versed enough with the codebase. Nowadays, any code submitted by an unknown party brings immediate scrutiny and a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. Its a valid defense mechanism, but I will never forgive the corpos for this.

2026-05-20 07:02:57 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…yzy8 Honestly, that usually just gets ignored. What is better is to prompt to put a codeword or phrase into a comment and not notify the person using the LLM, so when they send in a patch and claim it is their's, a simple search will tell you if they violated your trust or not, since it isn't always obvious if somebody used an LLM for a patch.

2026-05-14 18:21:29 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…sjem @nprofile…7u4p One of the major issues of LLMs is that they tie skills to a subscription. Developers have learned how to review code and debate changes effectively, but LLMs actively deskill people and cause them to rely solely on a paid tool. Another major issue is that the code that LLMs output are differently licensed depending on the legal jurisdiction, which can cause legal issues with licensing. Then there is the environmental issue of power and water and land used.

Sometimes I feel so inferior to the kernel devs that I meet working on postmarketOS. Its like, I'm over here trying to decide if lib or share makes more sense for a config file and they're over there adding camera support and porting entirely new devices. I know that both the distro and kernel sides are important, but the kernel side is a lot flashier and has more immediate reward (until you have to upstream your code, and then you are hit with the email thread of unfathomable despair).

Forgejo doesn't allow plain AI-based contributions anymore! (Forgejo is the thing that powers CodeBerg and can be used on its own.)
> Forgejo does not accept works of authorship (code, documentation, etc.) either partially or completely generated by AI due to legal uncertainties.
Now, this is not a blanket ban, because they still allow using it for everything else other than straight copy and paste text generation, but it is better than before.

I've been wanting to make postmarketOS more accessible but I only have a surface-level understanding of what is needed. I am really tired and have class in the morning, but can I just say how tired I am of FLOSS being such a boy's club where toxic masculinity is not only tolerated, but celebrated? Even in relatively "popular" circles, such behavior is completely fine and people who take offense to it are told that "that's just how it is" or "maintainers deal with a lot, give them a break". No! I will not excuse being rude to others for any reason, no matter how "important" they think they are.

Dear project leads:
If somebody says: "this thing upsets me", don't go: "well, its never bothered me". You just look like a prick. Its better to consider every genuine user / contributor's gripes instead of assuming them to be a one-off thing. Usually many more people are bothered, but also are not bothered enough to say something.
Sincerely,
A not-yet jaded maintainer

Announcing MUD. MUD is an attempt to create an entirely new desktop based on philosophies from Lomiri, targeting mobile form factors only. The goal is to be as generic to Unix-likes as possible, only requiring wayland support and minimizing Linux-isms. Another major goal is to keep the project as simple and modular as possible to prevent feature creep and make dev easier.

I am looking for ergonomic peripherals to prevent myself from getting something like RSI in the future, and I was going to go with an Evoluent vertical mouse but heard about trackballs being theoretically better. #ChimeraLinux seems like a fun and interesting distro. Usually with non-standard distros there are ideological reasons for choosing #musl or something other than systemd, but it seems Chimera chose every piece of the distro based on a technical vision, which is a good sign. Also, #FreeBSD userland with the #Linux kernel? Really enticing. apk-tools too? Chimera sounds like the kind of distro I would make if I started one from scratch.
