Never owned a home yet, would like to soon-ish. But if I can't do stupid, trashy stuff, do I really own it or would I have paid an exorbitant amount for temporary permission to live there?

All the characters and plotlines got wrapped up pretty neatly, it was more so just the background worldbuilding that I found really interesting and wish it got a bit more fleshed out.

Sounds like Wendell Berry passed away a couple weeks ago. Picked up "The world ending fire" (a collection of essays) by him a few weeks ago from the library. Only read a few essays in it so far, but probably worth a read if that kind of book interests you. "Why I won't buy a computer" was especially interesting, even if I might not have made the same assessment of modern tech.

Folding phones are interesting, I know a lot of more Luddite aligned people want smaller phones, but honestly the bigger the better IMO. 2k is an absurd price to pay for a phone though. 2k would get me nearly 2 months rent at my last apartment, and more than 4x the most I've ever spent on an electric.

Because I don't push people to Nostr in the same way I don't push people towards RSS, Linux, or self hosting. Even though some family members are rather advanced tech users, I'm the only one who's actually made a hobby out of tech. Most people I know, and all of my family members, just use tech as a tool. None of us are big on social media either.
(I've actually only met the first IRL user of Linux less than two years ago when a co-worker tried Manjaro. I'm yet to meet someone IRL who I know uses Nostr/ActivityPub/AT, crypto, or any other decentralized protocol).
Right now, if somebody has no interest in tech as a hobby, a vanilla Nostr (and other protocols) experience probably won't bring much value to the average user. Since the userbase 'seems' less saturated with Crypto content, and with the advent of the more whimsy side of things like Ditto or alternative stuff (nsites, magazines, chats, ect) that might change in the future.

My weather saga continues. After dealing with the storm itself I spent a long day in Buffalo. Right as I left I thought the weather was crazy, with super hard rain and a bunch of standing water on the roads.
Turned out it got WAY worse right after I left.

Well I made it back home. Took a three hour nap in a conference room, then hit the road and got real lucky that I timed thunderstorm and tornado warning free windows at both my starting point and destination.
Also, glad I took a nap because my alarm goes off in 3hr48min. Either this is late GN or an early GM, not sure. Rural interstate moto driving after midnight, with the sky lit up by quite a few distant lightning strikes, is quite the vibe.

2026-09-03 00:10:25 UTC

My afternoon/evening in a nutshell:
) I'm working a bit late, but I'd really like to get this thing fixed before I leave. I took my motorcycle, and it'll rain in the evening, but I'll be back hours before it starts.
...
) Well, I'm cutting it close, but I've still got time to drive ~110 miles before the storm hits
...
) I'm definitely going to get rained on, but a little summer rain won't hurt me.
...
) Severe thunderstorm warning
) eff
...
) Tornado warning while driving down the highway on a 250cc moto
) eff, eff, eff
...
Long story short I hightailed it off the highway, hesitated and decided to shelter at a gas station. The tornado watch extended from 7:30 to 11 so I decided to book it through some really bad rain to a work location 3 miles away. Still 60 miles from home though, and leaving puddles on a conference room floor.
Honestly of all the places to hunker down for the night this is actually a pretty nice place, so don't worry too much internet strangers.
Moral of the story? Don't give it your all, just do the bare minimum and get home to watch TV or something lol. The thing I needed to fix? Didn't even get it fixed. Wound up doing a half bandaid fix that could have been done in 10 minutes instead of the hours I spent on it.

2026-09-02 18:43:04 UTC

Got called to do a thing for work a hundred or so miles away unexpectedly, between a few stops along the way and a wrong address in my GPS I'm probably going to be putting 250+ miles on my SG250. I'm reminded yet again that 250cc scramblers make very poor touring bikes.

If they're trying to get away from American infrastructure, the best argument would likely be that the Mastodon Inc (nonprofit) and Bluesky PBC are both registered in the United States.
On the technical side, Nostr:
* Has permanently referencable events and redundancy, meaning content can be archived and accessible beyond what AT/AP can do.
* Is a lot more flexible as a protocol. AFAIK you can't do ebooks and geocaching on anything other than Nostr
* Scaling a Nostr service is a lot easier and less resource intensive than scaling a large Activity Pub or AT based service
* Doesn't rely on DNS (heavily American influenced) or a centralized servers for identity management
Technical Drawbacks:
* Key based identities would need to be abstracted for the average user. Good luck having them manage their own keys.
Culture wise:
* Nostr also lacks some of the extremists that have congregated on ActivityPub (both left and right) and AT (left). Sure the BTC people can get a bit loud sometimes, but it's nothing compared to the dark corners of the other two protocols.
Finally, while it'd likely be considered a drawback to the German government, it'd be a benifit to the people that Nostr is decentralized enough that they can't rule it with an iron fist like they're likely eyeing with big centralized AT/AP services.

I wouldn't be surprised if little electric city cars become a lot more popular, but man, I'm not sure what Stellantis is doing there. It's almost exactly double what I paid for my (used) Fiesta, and there's ebikes with 5kw batteries out there.

Just finished the book "Son of the Black sword." Heard about it randomly the other day, apparently the last book of the series is being dedicated to George RR Matin with the text "See, it's not so hard"
Definitely worth checking out. The world building is really spectacular, it starts out fantasy like but - without spoilers - there's a lot more about the world that slowly gets elaborated on. There's also a lot of political intrigue, although it's a bit slow to start, and the characters feel really fleshed out and unique.
Definitely with a read/listen.

Looks like Duolingo uses Google services to recognize speech. My best guess would be to try the web browser version, otherwisee not sure if there's a way to use the app without g services (or at least Google speech services).
