💯 Forks are what make Bitcoin resilient. We can argue whether this fork is good or bad (I think it's good) but forking in general is great, and at the heart of what makes Bitcoin permissionless and censorship resistant.

I always thought it was to keep out the inevitable corruption that happens to anything the state controls. We should separate religion from state for the same reason press, education, healthcare, money, etc. should be separate: because politics is poison. Government always weaponizes any institution it controls against the people, which they did with religion as you point out. I agree that "religion" meant Christianity to almost everyone involved in the with founding the US.

The only possible hope for shitcore now is that this episode results in sufficient ossification that the op_return change is the last. I could see anything remotely controversial getting massive push-back in the near future, probably for the next several years. But with Wall Street, big miners, and core united against plebs, resolve will weaken overtime, just like we've seen it weaken over the last 10 years but faster. Bitcoin is like a city under siege and the enemy just dealt a major blow to the defenses, and breached the outer walls. Some defenders still think the city can be saved but It's just a matter of time now. The barbarians are at the gate.

Can't speak for mechanic of course but for me, the lack of URSF signal is more about honesty and complacency: plebs honestly taking a stand instead of complacently deferring to a few big mining pools. Accepting your hypothetical doesn't change my conclusion from all this. If there had been a URSF with 80% support the only thing that changes is having more respect for the pleb node runner community who actually took a stand instead of deferring to mining pools. But I'd still see a split from core as needed and welcome, as I personally am not interested in some Ethereum 2.0 abomination overflowing with inscriptions, ordinals, and whatever other nonsense core has in mind, no matter how many plebs support it. The reality is there was zero real opposition to bip-110 in the form of URSF, and we are left to interpret this the best we can.

💯 I'm a C now, with the addition that I consider Core Bitcoin to be a shitcoin, and will only continue to degenerate. I must face the hard reality that I'm a degen shitcoin trader at least for the time being.
The sad thing is that now I see other bitcoiners as just future bag holders, instead of comrades in arms against fiat. Maybe we will figure out uncorruptible hard money someday and be united again. Unfortunately I don't have much hope for what Luke's doing, but I'm willing to give him a chance and see how it plays out. But realistically we need a new champion.

2026-08-11 03:22:52 UTC

The first attempt turned out to be corruptible, but I agree with you that Satoshi had the right idea and all we had to do was not screw it up. It may take a few more iterations to get it right. Maybe Luke and Mechanic can do it, or maybe it will be left to others. Satoshi gave us the concept, we just need to correctly implement. I don't think that's Bitcoin in its current form, but we don't need to start from scratch and that gives us a big advantage.

Yeah, it's going to take precision and luck to dump at the right moment. It's entirely possible that moment is right now, in the near future, or further down the road. For now I'm willing to wait and see how the next six months to a year play out. That's the shitcoin reality we're all in now.

2026-08-10 12:52:26 UTC

I hope it pumps thanks to the now complete Wall Street and miner capture, reaching all time highs so I can dump, and hopefully by that time a true hard money coin has emerged. So is there some credibility here, might there possibly be some cause for concern, or am I just a psychotic knotzi conspiracy theorist?

2026-08-09 22:13:50 UTC

I had a weird idea that Bitcoin could avoid capture and be decentralized hard money, and plebs would rise to the occasion when it got attacked by devs more interested in tokenized assets and vc funding than separating money and state. I expect Saylor and the Core to pump my bags and make me filthy fiat rich 🤑. I'll wait for Saylor to pump my bags. We're all shitcoiners now, just like Lopp said. I thought I owned freedom money, turns out it's just eth 2.0, that doesn't mean I won't try to get fiat rich off it.

2026-08-09 13:26:04 UTC

Why is it essential? Before yesterday I would have agreed, but plebs have no power. Holding keys is essential but consensus rules are now whatever miners and the Bitcoin Consortium say they are, no amount of pleb node runners will change that.
I'm not divesting anytime soon. But my eyes are open now. No more freedom money, no more separation of money and state. I'm here for fiat gains. If you can't beat em, join em.

He lowered himself to Core's level. That was a mistake, but a common one in fights like this, and one he was forced to make like a check mate. We're all shitcoiners now. Lopp said this and I believed he was wrong, but he got his way.

I'll run knots pre-rdts while I'm still running a node, but I don't see much point anymore. For me this is sadly the end of the freedom money dream. Bitcoin is captured, the miners and suit consortium run it now, and they'll get whatever they want with bought and paid for core devs. The thesis that plebs are the immune system was tested and failed. So Bitcoin will inevitably become another Ethereum-like shitcoin. I'll stick around until Saylor pumps my bags and then I'm out for fiat gains. I believed Bitcoin could separate money and state. I was wrong.

Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if pools collude because total miner control over consensus rules is the real prize here.
