CS and CE degrees got flooded by people who thought it was just a path to easy money. Now those degrees have an unemployment rate similar to people graduating with fine arts and performance arts degrees. And it started around 2018, not with AI (according to the NY Fed Statistics).
Add to that, the startup model long stopped incentivizing building things that are maintanable for 5+ years, instead becoming valued by how much user data they could collect by the time the whole thing is sold off.
There is cool stuff around though. Saw someone building games for TempleOS a few weeks ago.

Cara, depois que me tornei agorista, parei de tolerar, se bem que não sei se eu tolerava isso antes, mas passei a me incomodar bastante, no mínimo, com pessoas que não são consistentes, não têm consistência entre princípios, meios e fins. Detesto isso, detesto esse tipo de coisa. Acredito que boa parte das pessoas, se não todo mundo, tem um ideal de mundo. A realidade é caótica o suficiente para que cada um deseje transformá-la. Não é possível que exista alguém plenamente satisfeito com as coisas tais como são no momento presente. Mas tem uma coisa que atualmente percebi que me incomoda muito e não sei se incomodava tanto. Disse isso no começo desta postagem. É a incoerência, a inconsistência. Me dá muita raiva, sinceramente. Como assim você fala uma coisa e pratica outra?

That's an interesting point. Based on my quick research this is absolutely a violation.
I think that what you say could be true for replacing "good enough" but people will still desire to have artisinal things made by others. Trusting the creator to use their expertise and taste to surprise them, due to not being in another person's head. An AI may be a good mirror, but its the unexpected and novel that gets people seeking to go outside their own heads. Ironically early AI were better at delivering on this through the sheer bizarre results you would get, but those less able to make anything coherent and usable.
The "I didn't even know I wanted that and wasn't expecting this today" kind of vibe is what I'm trying to point at. The wabi-sabi of something made by someone else is appealing. Even if automated to some degree, you're still seeing THAT person's choices in how they went about the design, the automation, and what they were satisfied with.
Many of the features in #Amethyst I never would have thought of on my own if I was in charge, but I'm glad they're there.

THE APEX PREDATOR HAD TECHNOLOGY. THE PREY HAD POPULATION. WHAT CHANGED?

For nearly two centuries, the imperial West occupied the position of an apex predator in the global human ecosystem.
Not because its people were inherently stronger, more intelligent, or more capable.
Because technology gave its institutions teeth.
The rifle against the spear. The machine gun against massed infantry. The steamship against the coastal kingdom. The industrial economy against the agricultural population.
At population scale, the imbalance was staggering.
A relatively small industrial power could project violence across oceans, subjugate millions, extract their resources, control their markets, and finance the next generation of technological superiority with the proceeds.
Technology was the teeth. Industry was the muscle. Finance was the circulatory system. Imperial administration was the nervous system.
And colonial ideology supplied the moral justification for the hunt.
But this was never a natural food chain. It was an engineered one.
The developing world wasn't born prey. Much of its vulnerability was produced and maintained through conquest, extraction, unequal trade, and restrictions on political and economic sovereignty.
So what changed around the turn of the millennium?
The process had begun decades earlier with decolonisation, mass education, national industrialisation, and technological diffusion.
Then globalisation produced an extraordinary unintended consequence.
The industrial predator moved its factories into territories it had historically treated as sources of cheap labour and raw materials.
Those populations learned to manufacture the machinery.
Then the electronics.
Then the weapons, satellites, software, communications infrastructure, and increasingly the technologies that determine future industrial power.
The internet accelerated the distribution of knowledge. Nuclear deterrence complicated military coercion. Cheap drones and digital systems began changing the economics of force.
And the enormous populations once regarded primarily as labour reserves became concentrations of engineers, manufacturers, consumers, capital, and technological capability.
The predator's greatest advantage was no longer exclusively its own.
This is not to suggest that the developing world has achieved equality. Far from it. Industrial power remains unevenly distributed, and Western financial, military, and technological advantages remain formidable.
But the underlying dynamic has changed.
The old imperial order depended on an enormous asymmetry between the ability to inflict damage and the ability to resist it.
As that asymmetry narrows, coercion becomes more expensive. Dependence becomes mutual. Population becomes an advantage when combined with education, productive capacity, and sovereign technology.
And the former apex predator discovers something profoundly uncomfortable.
The rest of the ecosystem was never biologically destined to be prey. It simply lacked comparable teeth.
The twenty-first century is not necessarily the age of a new apex predator.
It may be the age in which the global food chain itself becomes impossible to maintain.
Because once billions of people acquire the technological means to resist domination, the mathematics of empire changes permanently.
Civilisation was never about who had the sharpest teeth. That was merely the age of predation.
The real test begins when everyone can bite.
