Tonight I'm releasing the first version of Orchard, a permissionless Flatpak store for Linux. There is no middle man. I don't host anyone's binaries, nothing needs approval, and there are no rankings or algorithms.
For developers: ship from your own registry and sign a few Nostr events describing the app. A proof file in your repo makes the link verifiable. Check PUBLISHING.md for a walkthrough and sample CI workflow to make things dead simple (tag and push, that's it).
For users: it's a real flatpak store and has built-in Flathub support so there's already thousands of apps available. All apps published to Nostr have publisher, repository, and digest verification so you know you can trust the app is what it says it is. Sign in via nostrconnect (bunker next version), review your favorite apps, and see what folks in your web of trust have said.

@npub1lnv…7vjj are app configs editable? just spun up a nostr-rs-relay, but looking to edit accepted event kinds and a few other things.

Tons of progress on Orchard, a permissionless app store (Flatpak to start, AppImage on the roadmap) for Linux using Nostr as the backend. The basics are all built, now finalizing the spec, web of trust for reviews, repo verification, etc.
Orchard hosts nothing, and will come with extensive dev documentation on how to set up CI workflows to publish your apps, hosted on your OCI registry (public or self-hosted). All events will be mirrored across multiple relays so there is never an issue with an app not being available.
0.1 will be out this week so feedback will be appreciate. Will announce a repo URL soon.

should have a 0.1 to release this week.

Testing! Permissionless publishing of Flatpak applications over Nostr...not ready for consumption, but so far so good. Spec based on Zapstore's with a few additions. Details soon.

if you want to play with an iso in a vm, letdown2491/kumaOS. i need to release kuma-nostrd separately so that any distro could use the letdown2491/kumaUI kuma-shell which has the widget that talks to kuma-nostrd (which is currently just built into the distro)

kumaUI is available for testing. It is a minimalist desktop shell which will work with Niri and Sway (hyprland next). It is built on GPUI (a hardware accelerated UI framework written in Rust and used by Zed) and offers plenty of system widgets (more soon), an app launcher, background picker, a dock, and more.

9 hours later...all green, kumaUI integrated into kumaOS.

2026-10-02 21:33:33 UTC

about to release kumaOS 44.4.0 which is a big release integrating Nostr signing directly into the OS, a new kumaUI package to replace noctalia, and more. I'll release a quick video when packages are finished building.
Not recommending it as a daily driver to anyone BUT, I have been using it as my only Linux distro for the past 2 months so it is very much ready.
Now to work on replacing tuigreeter for logins then one final release before fedora releases v45 so I can drop kumaOS 45.0.0 right alongside it.

2026-10-02 19:14:25 UTC

toughest part of developing your own distro is probably creating ci workflows to build binaries between different components.

turns out that sometimes when you build your own distro, you discover that you also want to build your own shell. yes, i'm f***ing retarded.

just my linux box signing nostr events, nothing to see here.
this is built into my custom distro (kumaOS), but might release separately, who knows. ui is just a custom noctalia plugin but ties into the kuma-nostr daemon which has a full cli. no passwords required as the daemon interfaces with greetd through a pam module so when you sign into your computer, the vault is just there. nsec is never stored in plaintext but as an ncrypset (n^18).

thank god you shared this announcement...i guess i can no longer pay my rent/bills/groceries with bitcoin any more

2026-09-29 23:30:56 UTC

Just released Arca, an open source financial advisor using any OpenAI-compatible API (like ppq, etc) to analyze household financial data, make projections, plan for retirement, etc., with pretty simple but thorough onboarding. There's even a Bitcoin skill in there.
Early days so it's pretty conservative. Next version will have an "All in" mode for those of us that are 100% Bitcoin.

couldn't agree more. if you actually parent your kids and teach them how to be self-sufficient adults, sky is the limit. if you treat them like kids, they will act like children forever.
