And this is how harvesting honey before the farmer @nprofile…fek2 upgrade. The element of danger made it very exciting and much harder work.

One of our core values on our farm is 'find a better way'.
We can always do a little better and sometimes we can do a LOT better.

Its on the list of things I need to learn

2026-05-02 22:41:47 UTC

Farmer Tbone has been bringing in a bit more milk from our jersey Nina this week so I have been back into milk processing for the first time since having our baby.
I have successfully turned all that milk into queso fresco, riccota, buttermilk, sweet whey, butter, yoghurt, sour cream, icecream, clabber, kifir, muscapone and heavy cream.
@nprofile…fek2 brings in all the dairy we need and I get to turn it into all the foods we like to eat.
Thats a huge level up for our homestead and I'm taking all dairy items off our grocery list.. except the fancy cheeses because life without bree is not worth living 😂

First time we enjoyed silverside.
I stabbed it all over with a metal skewer then soaked it in brine with buttermilk for 24 hours. 10 hour slow cook in the oven fully submerged in clean water with herbs and spices and a splash of apple cider vinegar.
That much prep and cooming you could probably make a leather boot palatable 😂

2026-04-26 23:38:38 UTC

The most difficult part of cooking silverside is remembering that Im planning to cook silverside in 3 days time.

Sourdough discard banana pancakes
Recipe
Combine:
Some sourdough discard
A banana or two
Same number of eggs as bananas
About that much salt
Hit it with the stick blender
Then add:
Enough flour to give the consistency you want
Cook:
Preferably in burnt butter
Makes:
A few pancakes 🥞

All the time!
We live in a small village. I see my neighbours once a week a yoga classes, every few weeks for morning tea where everyone bakes tasty things, monthly at our garden catch up to swap seeds and produce and then whenever someone drops in or we go to catch up for a random afternoon cheese and wine session.
A handful of our neighbours are our close friends but all of them are our community.

2026-04-13 07:41:57 UTC

Our very cute new baby. This is the first calf we have had that was both conceived and born on the farm.
A significant milestone for us.

I think if you make any type based on the type of vinegar you use and how you process it. Putting it straight in the fridge keeps it hot and leaving it at room temp allows rhe flavour to mellow out.

Any mustard seed will work or you can mix a variety of them together to make it more interesting to look at. Just harvest the seeds from your mustard greens at the end of the season and put a quantity aside to plant again the next year then eat the rest.

2026-04-11 00:00:49 UTC

Yes you can make mustard at home!
Simply soak mustard seeds in vinegar or beer for 2 days at a 2:1 liquid to seeds ratio, add a little salt and hit it with the stick blender.
Mustard greens are really easy to grow and as a bonus tbey act as a pest trap for the bug that like to eat broccoli and cabbage so for my southerm hemisphere friends its mustard planting time right now.
Time to have a go at growing and making your own mustard.
Ill be adding a little honey to this batch to sweeten it up a bit.

More than just the weed control.
We added Chiva and MowMow onto the homestead over a year ago. They have been brilliant at managing weeds and maintaining their primary paddock.
But so much more than that they seek out our company for pats, snacks and the occasional tethered walk around the property
Nothing beats the soft nuzzles, bleated greetings, and the endless antics that turn a backyard into a comedy club.
Feeling sad... Get a goat!!

I did! I learnt about multisowing seeds likebeets with 3seeds per hole for slightly smaller beets but more weight for overall harvest. Also about optimal spacing with interplanting. The last one im still getting my head around and will probably try next season when I have a bit more of an understanding. I plan to read the book again before my spring planting.

More Than Just the Eggs
While the eggs are the delicious payoff, the benefits don’t stop there. Keeping a small flock introduces you to the gentle rhythm of caring for animals. There’s a quiet satisfaction in letting them out in the morning, watching them explore, and collecting warm eggs from the nesting box. It’s a small connection to a more self-sufficient lifestyle, right in your own garden.

Yeah it's the raw garlic but also the honey that can be a breeding grown for botulinum. My understanding is there is a certain pH required for it to grow so I'll be testing the end product and adding apple cider vinegar to increase pH if needed for safety.
