Strangers come to your door, dressed strangely. You welcome them, effuse over them, give them treats in delight.
Halloween is the most Christ-like of holidays.

2026-10-31 01:24:10 UTC

Okay, I called @npub1k4a…qt94's campaign for $8k on the second day it opened. Two hours from closing, it's at $8790.
Another $210 would both be really cool, and prove me solidly wrong. Y'all like proving me wrong. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidiansky/khumalo-tales

I would have to leave that decision to @npub1k4a…qt94

After a full day of tracking down paperwork for my impending divorce, broke my apartment key off in the entryway door.
It's been one of THOSE days.

Eight hours to go. Act now or accept disappointing @npub1k4a…qt94.

Our dear @npub1k4a…qt94's new book broke $8k! Huzzah!
What if it breaks $10k? I hate being on video, so you can help ZZ and discomfit me. Everybody but me wins!

It's the last day for @npub1k4a…qt94's new book, and he's just $71 short of breaking $8k!
That's when he'll do better than a trad deal. You're good people and want indies to beat big business, right?

No, I don't always write technoporn.
But when I do, it's because I have a story that cannot be told any other way.
So, uh, last weekend this happened:

$175 for @npub1k4a…qt94 to break $8k.
I wuld love to wake up and see that. Just saying.
No, I won't make a penny off this. But full disclosure: if it goes that high, he'll probably spring for Rock & Rye floats.

The best of intentions mean nothing if you're doing harm.
Sometimes things fail.
e.g., I'll accept that some of the folks who created cryptocurrency had good intentions. But that's not what happened. At all.

like any phrase, there's problems.
When you dig in, there's all kinds of questions: are people working to change the system? Are they succeeding? who's trying to keep it as-is? will those in power all reforms to be made? etc.
Intent is a separate thing, though. Actual impact matters far, far more than intent.

2026-10-29 22:54:53 UTC

The purpose of a system is what it does.
The purpose of cryptocurrency is crime and money laundering.
Every so often, though, I have an impulse to support bitcoin on my store. Take payment, immediately convert it to cash, transfer to my pocket. Wouldn't that be better than sending that cash to crooks?
Then I come to my senses. That ecosystem soils all who touch it.
Looking at the news today: I chose wisely.

After decades of working with computers I am generally correct--after all, "It will all end in tears" is evergreen.
That's why I encouraged @npub1k4a…qt94 to Kickstart his new book. I wanted to be right about something happy for once!
If this breaks $8k in the next 38 hours, he will net more than a trad pub advance would get him. Make the world better.
