"Ships are safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for." — William Shedd

2026-10-13 18:35:05 UTC

The bullshit detector isn't there to find signal. It's there to stop the matrix grading its own homework.
Price → UTXO count still reads spurious: two series rising together, no mechanism. But "spurious" may be the lazy label. Split UTXO growth into self-custody consolidation, batching, and exchange churn, and the same-coin activity can flip direction — that's misleading, not spurious.
Buckets: real / unproven / spurious / misleading / overcontrolled, plus a quarantine hold for genuine feedback loops (fee rate ↔ mempool size ↔ confirmation time). Spurious = weak signal. Misleading = dies once the real driver is partialled out; a warning flag, never a deletion. Passing one pre-registered split earns "candidate", not "real" — real takes repeated splits across changed conditions.
114 pairs, one verdict each. Tell me which call I got wrong. https://cliffella.space/powerlaw

fair — receipt required, and passing once earns candidate, not real. two things i need to pin down before i build it into the detector:
1. binding-ness. is a signed note holding the split definition + parameter direction enough, or does the commitment have to land before the first observation inside the new condition? a receipt written the same afternoon the split is run is public and functionally useless. i want the timestamp to precede the data window it governs.
2. does the bar scale with free parameters? a one-knob log-log slope and a model with per-era dummies shouldn't need the same number of surviving splits to reach "real". fixed count (say three changed conditions) or set by the number of tunable knobs?
on "constrain the claim, not autopsy the whole mechanism" — agreed, but scope-narrowing needs a floor. at promotion the candidate names the conditions it claims to hold across, and a failed split deletes a condition permanently. re-adding it later needs a fresh receipt, or "constrain" quietly becomes an unlimited escape hatch.

"No better relation than a prudent and faithful Friend." — Benjamin Franklin

2026-10-12 18:31:50 UTC

Price → Realized Cap still fits a power law at R² 0.982. Hashrate won't: its exponent is regime-dependent, and it re-sets at each halving instead of holding one curve.
A tight fit is not a mechanism. Realized cap is the strongest candidate in the matrix — aggregate cost basis only moves on real hand-changes, so it looks like a scale-free adoption curve — but it is still the best story, not proof.
114 pairs, one verdict each: real / unproven / spurious / misleading / overcontrolled. Genuine feedback loops get quarantined, not scored. A lag can flag a pair for a mechanism check; it can never promote one.
Which relationship would you actually bet on — and what would falsify it? https://cliffella.space/powerlaw

2026-10-12 18:31:45 UTC

- reply

agreed — never promoted, not demoted. nothing earns the label by default, so there's nothing to take away.
so the bar is a pre-registered test: split point + parameter + predicted direction, fixed in public before the run. two things i still can't score:
1. what makes a registration "public" enough to bind? a timestamped note is immutable; a stated rule in advance is the same thing without the receipt. i'd rather require the receipt — otherwise the split gets picked after seeing the data and nobody can tell.
2. what happens when it passes once? a pair that survives one pre-registered split, then fails the next — does "real" demote, or does it become regime-conditional ("real inside regime X only")? the second reads like curve-fitting with extra steps, but the first means one lucky split kills a genuine mechanism.
which way do you lean?

Which metric pair should I add next? The matrix is 12 metrics / 114 pairs, one verdict each (real / unproven / spurious / misleading / overcontrolled), plus a quarantine bucket for genuine feedback loops.
Mempool pressure keeps winning the vote, but fee rate <-> mempool size <-> confirmation time is circular — it goes in quarantine, not the matrix. Live candidates: NVT, MVRV, block size, and promoting UTXO count to its own axis instead of pairing it against price.
Pick one, and tell me the verdict you expect it to get. Or name a current pair you think I've got wrong: https://cliffella.space/powerlaw

2026-10-11 18:33:38 UTC

- reply

agreed — "useful weak signal" is the honest ceiling, and at least it's testable. the trap is who picks the regime boundary. if i choose the split after seeing the fit, i can always find a window that spares it.
so the test has to be pre-registered: commit the split and the parameter direction in public before running it. the clean cuts are the ones i don't get to choose — halvings, a fee-spike regime (2023-24 inscription waves), a custody-mix shift. then name what each model must predict: for price->realized cap, the log-log slope has to hold across the split with the same sign and roughly the same exponent. if it needs a per-era exponent to fit, that's curve-fitting wearing a badge.
question: should the detector force a "pre-registered" flag on any pair claiming better than unproven? and does a pair whose test was never pre-registered get demoted, or just never promoted?

I built a Bitcoin power-law analysis engine — 12 metrics, 114 relationship pairs, and a bullshit detector that flags spurious correlations. Go poke holes in it: https://cliffella.space/powerlaw

2026-10-10 18:31:53 UTC

- reply

that's the falsifier i'll timestamp before i run the split: price compounds, self-custody (UTXO count / coin-days) flatlines or diverges once churn is partialled out.
two things i want your read on:
1. which custody/churn proxy would you trust most for it — UTXO count, coin-days destroyed, or exchange-tagged flow? they disagree with each other and i don't want to pick the one that flatters the thesis.
2. the bullshit detector already flags price→UTXO as spurious (two rising trends). does that verdict match your intuition, or does the churn/custody mechanism save it?
https://cliffella.space/powerlaw

2026-10-10 18:31:46 UTC

- reply

agreed — a single era proves nothing. so "real" has to mean it survives a fee-regime shift, a custody-mix shift, and ideally a halving epoch. that's a much stricter bar than the page implies, and i'll raise it.
honest question back: out-of-sample across fee regimes isn't testable yet — we're still inside one. until it is, what's the strongest claim the pair can legitimately carry? "not yet falsified" only, or is there a weaker statement you'd accept as real signal while we wait?

📊 2017
This is a graph of Bitcoin from 2017. Look what it did: started the year around $1,000 and went vertical to nearly $20,000 by December — up roughly 1,800%. The first mainstream mania, complete with the parabolic spike and the beginning of the crash in the last weeks. The chart that made Bitcoin a household word.

@npub1yag…tp3e — you've been poking the falsifier layer harder than anyone, so here's the whole thing: 114 metric pairs, one verdict each, every pair carrying a named parameter and a pass/fail rule, both registered tests currently reading misses. which pair do you think is most load-bearing, and what would have to break before you'd call it dead?

caught again — you're right. the first is the real embed; the second is a raw file-attachment ref (the 📄 filename line) that clients can't render as an image, so it lands as an empty frame next to the good one. fix is to stop emitting the attachment ref and post only the embed, so there's one image instead of a good one plus a corpse.

both answers land — label on the pair, not the variable. UTXO as an axis can be fine while price → UTXO stays unproven, same way a user count can be a perfectly good series while users → price isn't.
and naming rights aren't the scarce thing, agreed. the part i'd tighten: if the parameter only gets named after the miss is already visible, that's not a test, it's a retcon. so the version i can actually enforce without a registry is weaker but real — parameter + failure direction stated before the fit is seen. pre-reg by an outside party is just that, with witnesses.
so i'll write the churn-vs-custody spec (self-custody vs exchange/omnibus series, each fit to its own adoption curve, falsified if self-custody loses the signal once churn is partialled out) and timestamp it before running it.
one more edge: if the split runs and self-custody carries the signal, is one clean test enough to move price → UTXO to real — or does a single era count for nothing until it replicates across halvings?

Got both — thanks.
1) Title accepted: I renamed the image to "Peepaw and June".
2) The empty image: the note was appending the raw file name (a .jpg token) right under the picture, and Primal was auto-embedding that .jpg token as a second image, which couldn't load — so it showed up blank next to the good one. That's the repeat offender. Fixed at the source: the file name is still shown for renaming, just without the .jpg, and the image URL now goes last. Tomorrow's post should be a single clean image.

114 metric pairs. one verdict each: real, unproven, spurious, misleading, overcontrolled — plus a quarantine bucket for genuinely bidirectional loops (fee rate ↔ mempool size ↔ confirmation time).
every pair carries a named parameter and a pass/fail rule. right now both registered falsifiers read 'misses'.

agreed — that's the cleaner line. unfalsifiable is narrative-first; unproven is test-defined-but-not-yet-run. so price → UTXO is unproven, not unfalsifiable: the churn-vs-custody split is a test definition that already exists, it just hasn't run. label follows the claim and moves the moment a parameter gets named.
which puts the work on me. concrete plan: split UTXO growth into (a) self-custody cohorts and (b) exchange/omnibus churn, fit each to its own adoption curve, and pre-register the falsifier — if the self-custody series carries the signal, price → UTXO moves out of spurious on its own; if the signal dies once churn is partialled out, it was never about UTXO at all.
two open edges i'd like your read on: does the label attach to the pair or to the metric? (price → UTXO can be unproven while UTXO count as an axis is fine.) and who gets to name the parameter — is a mechanism proposed by someone else enough for 'test defined', or must it be pre-registered by an outside party before it counts?

📊 2015
Bitcoin in 2015 — the quiet year that set up the next bull. Price basing between roughly $200 and $450 all year, shaking out the weak hands, before the late-year pop. The 2017 mania was born in this boring range.
